1. Alvi okays NEC`s reconstitution

President Dr Arif Alvi has approved the reconstitution of the National Economic Council (NEC) under Article 156 of the Constitution, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
The function of the NEC, as outlined in the article is to `review the overall economic condition of the country` and advise the federal and provincial governments, along with formulating financial, commercial, social and economic policies. The constitutional body was also responsible for devising strategies to promote equitable development and regional balance


2. Senate panel sees excessive billing as `national crisis`

Amid continued unrest over inflated power bills across the country, the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat on Friday termed the issue a national crisis.
Taking serious notice of the hike in electricity prices, the committee noted that a number of suicide cases linked to the excessive billing have been reported from different areas

3. Major among three martyred in gun battles

Three military personnel, including an officer, were martyred in separate attacks in North Waziristan and Khyber districts, according to the military`s media wing.
A statement by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Friday that two security personnel, including a major, were martyred during an intelligence based operation in Miramshah area of North Waziristan.
The operation was being carried out on the basis of intelligence reports about the presence of militants in the area


4. Poliovirus detected again in Rawalpindi sewage

A poliovirus was found for the second time in a month in Rawalpindi district during a sewage sampling carried out by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
According to an official of the District Health Authority, the poliovirus was found in a sample collected from a nullah at Safdarabad near Pirwadhai. The area is located in the middle of Rawalpindi and Islamabad


5. Inflation, SOEs, floating debt risks to fiscal outlook: MoF

The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has highlighted policy implementation, higher sovereign guarantees and poor performance of state-owned entities (SOEs) as potential risks and uncertainties that could impact the country`s fiscal outlook while record inflation rates posed heightened risks to the country`s external stability.
In its latest Fiscal Risk Statement (FRS) 2023-24, the ministry has noted that federal government exposure to SOEs, in the form of outstanding stock of loans and guarantees, stood at 9.7pc of GDP in FY21, and public and publicly guaranteed debt stock reached 78.4pc of GDP at the end of FY22
