1. ECP crosses delimitation milestone

A list of preliminary delimitations published by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday rearranged electoral districts across the country in light of the 2023 digital census, clubbing dozens of districts to rationalise the population of constituencies, as well as reshuffling the number of national and provincial assembly seats allocated to various districts.
The ECP decision is being termed as a significant step towards the conduct of general elections, likely to be held in the first month of the next year. However, speculations continue on the fate of the polls, with many claiming the exercise could be delayed by at least a year, on one pretext or the other


2. Senate committee to take up `missing` bill issue today

The Senate Standing Committee on Interior is set to take up the issue of a missing bill of Senator Irfan Siddiqui, which focuses on separating the judiciary from the executive by clipping judicial powers being enjoyed by bureaucrats posted in Islamabad district administration.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) Senator Irfan Siddiqui raised the issue of his missing bill titled `Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Bill 2022` with the committee, which then decided to take it up in its meeting on Thursday

3. Pakistan owes $1.2bn to Chinese power producers

The government on Wednesday reported the outstanding payables to the Chinese power producers at around Rs360 billion (about $1.25bn) as it pleaded to charge Rs1.83 per unit additional cost from consumers of ex-Wapda distribution companies (Discos) in October.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), which held a public hearing on the request of the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for recovering an additional Rs28.3bn or Rs1.83 per unit fuel cost adjustment in Discos` tariffs for electricity consumed in August, noted that a series of cheaper power plants remained unutilised because of transmission constraints, thus adding unnecessary burden on consumers


4. Pakistan to digitise Haj operations by 2024

The Ministry of Information Technology and the Ministry of Religious Affairs on Wednesday finalised the mechanism to digitise the Haj operation from next year.
The decision was taken at a meeting of a special committee, which was co-chaired by caretaker IT minister Dr Umar Saif and caretaker minister for religious affairs Aneeg Ahmed. The committee was constituted on the prime minister`s directives


5. Facebook launches drive to ensure election integrity

As preparations are underway to avoid delay in holding of general elections in Pakistan, Facebook has launched an awareness campaign regarding the community safety to protect vulnerable people from online threats and harassment as well as containing the flow of fake and manipulated news.
The campaign, `Approach to Protect Election Integrity and Support Community Safety in Pakistan`, has been launched ahead of the elections, as online activities surge manifolds during the elections, while many sections of society including media become targets of harassment, undue criticism as well as online threats
