1. US conveys ‘concrete’ steps for Pakistan

• The United States has told Pakistan what it must do if it wants Washington to resume paying out hundreds of millions of dollars in security aid
• “Our expectations are straightforward,” Pentagon spokesman Colonel Rob Manning
• “Taliban and Haqqani leadership and attack planners should no longer be able to find safe haven or conduct operations from Pakistani soil.”

3. Kashmir bloodshed: Why India not on ‘watch list’, Pakistan asks US

• Pakistan has asked the United States why India was not on Washington’s ‘special watch list on the issue of religious freedom’ despite unending bloodshed in held Kashmir and grave violation of minorities’ rights

5. KP cabinet approves stipend for prayer leaders

• The KP cabinet on January 8, 2018 approved Rs 10,000 as monthly stipend for prayer leaders of jamia mosques in the province
• This decision will take effect from February 2018. This stipend will be given to the prayer leaders having proper degrees from any of the five recognised boards of deeni madaris (seminaries)

6. Saudi Arabia invites bankers to pitch for Aramco listing roles

• Saudi Aramco has invited banks pitching for roles in its stock market listing, including Citi and Goldman Sachs, for meetings in the kingdom in the coming weeks to make their case

7. China opposes US statements linking terrorism to Pakistan

• In the face of mounting US pressure against Pakistan, China has opposed the idea of linking terrorism to any country and placing the onus of responsibility of counter-terrorism on a certain country
• Referring to the recent statements of US President Donald Trump and other US officials, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lu Kang said that ‘pointing fingers’ at each other is not conducive to the global counter-terrorism efforts.

8. Key Indian N-submarine damaged

• A Russian-designed Indian nuclear submarine, considered a key platform in the country`s second strike capability, has suffered major damage and has been undergoing repair for over 10 months
• It said the damage to INS Arihant may have been caused by a possible human error and the vessel had not sailed now for months

9. Iran warns world to prepare for US nuke deal withdrawal

• Iran warned the world on January 8, 2018 to prepare for the possible withdrawal of the United States from the landmark nuclear deal agreed in 2015
• “The international community must be prepared for the US possibly pulling out of the JCPOA,” said deputy foreign minister Abbas Araghchi
