1. PM awakens OIC to blasphemy, Islamophobia

• Prime Minister Imran Khan June 1, 2019 urged the Muslim world body to play an effective role in safeguarding the rights of Muslims and their religious sentiments, expressing concern over the rise in blasphemy and Islamophobia cases around the world.
• The blasphemous acts against the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) in the western world was a failure of the OIC, which should have made it clear to them how revered the Holy Prophet is to the Muslims.
• “How he (Muhammad PBUH) lives in our heart; it is up to us to explain to the western people the amount of pain they cause us when they ridicule or mock our Holy Prophet,” the prime minister said while addressing the 14th Islamic Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Makkah.
• The summit, also addressed by the Saudi King, OIC Secretary General Dr Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen and other Muslim world leaders, coincides with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the organization.


2. PM, Saudi Crown Prince agree to regularly exchange views

• Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have agreed to expedite implementation on decisions taken during the visit of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman to Islamabad in February.
• During their meeting on the sidelines of 14th summit of Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in Makkah yesterday, both leaders also agreed on early implementation of decisions taken during the first meeting of the Pak-Saudi Supreme Coordination Council. Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed gratitude to Saudi Arabia for extending oil facility to Pakistan against deferred payments, saying the gesture was a ‘timely support for the country’s economy’.
• “The brotherly gesture of the Kingdom provided timely support to the economy of Pakistan at a crucial juncture,” the prime minister told Saudi Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman agreed to regularly exchange views on all issues of mutual interest.


3. Pakistan’s polio programme no longer on track: WHO

• The International Health Regulations (IHR) Emergency Committee of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Pakistan’s polio eradication programme is no longer on track. The Emergency Committee reviewed the data on wild poliovirus (WPV1) and the implementation of the WHO Temporary Recommendations in Afghanistan, DR Congo, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Somalia.
• Regarding Pakistan, the Committee stated that it “is gravely concerned by the significant further increase in WPV1 cases globally this year, particularly in Pakistan.”
• It added that in the country the transmission of the virus continues to be widespread and recent “cluster of cases in Lahore also indicates that vulnerabilities still exist outside the high-risk corridors.” The committee further expressed its concerns about the attacks on vaccinators and the police accompanying them.
• “We are gravely concerned over the significant increase in WPV1 cases globally this year, particularly in Pakistan”


4. WB commits $465 million through two projects for Pakistan

• World Bank is committing $465 million through two projects to support higher education in Pakistan and expand sustainable electricity trade between Central Asia and South Asia.
• “The two projects support Pakistan’s long-term vision for building high quality talent and promote the creation of a regional energy market to boost economic prospects for millions of Pakistanis,” said Illango Patchamuthu, World Bank Country Director for Pakistan. “Both projects form part of the priority areas identified in Pakistan@100: Shaping the Future, a flagship initiative that identifies frontier interventions for Pakistan to become an upper middle-income country by 2047.”
• The $400 million Higher Education Development in Pakistan Project will strengthen tertiary education to produce skilled, innovative and enterprising graduates. It will strengthen partnerships with industry for strategic research and develop data-driven governance of tertiary education.


5. Pakistan Post to launch int’l remittances initiative

• Pakistan Post is going to launch international remittances initiative in collaboration with the National Bank of Pakistan to facilitate Pakistani expatriates to send their remittances through lawful means in the country.
• The said initiative is being launched under the umbrella of Pakistan Remittance Initiative (PRI), which was introduce to facilitate the faster and cheaper flow of remittance in an effective and convenient manner.
• The initiative would enable Pakistani expatriates to send their hard-earned money to their loved ones at doorstep with the help of the Pak-Post.
• FRI is aimed at encouraging the overseas Pakistanis to remit their cash through legal means which would eventually lead to boost foreign exchange reserves of the country.

6. OIC appoints Aldobeay as Kashmir envoy

• The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has appointed Saudi Arabia’s Yousef Aldobeay as it special envoy on Jammu and Kashmir.
• The 14th OIC Summit that concluded on June 1, 2019 in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, reiterated the Conference’s principled support for the legitimate right to self-determination of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in accordance with UN resolutions. Referring to the UN Kashmir report of 2018, the Final Communique of the Conference called for expedited establishment of a UN Commission of Inquiry to investigate the grave human rights violations and urged India to allow the Commission and other international organisations access to Indian-occupied Kashmir. The Conference endorsed resolutions adopted by the OIC ministerial meetings, the Foreign Office said in a statement.
• It may be recalled that the OIC Council of Ministers had adopted in February Pakistan’s resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir as well as a new resolution on maintenance of peace and stability in South Asia.


7. US, Taliban to hold new talks in Doha

• The US envoy negotiating with the Taliban will hold new round of talks this month with the group in Qatar.
• Zalmay Khalilzad left on Friday on a 17-day trip that will take him to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Germany, Belgium and the United Arab Emirates.
• Zalmay Khalilzad will arrive in Pakistan today (Sunday). He will attend Pakistan-US consultative meeting so that efforts for peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan could be stepped up.
• US-Pak bilateral consultative session will take place at Foreign Office. The US delegation will also meet senior civil and military authorities. However Zalmay Khalilzad’s meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has not been set. However US authorities are active in arranging meeting with the prime minister.
• In Doha, Zalmay Khalilzad will resume talks with the Taliban after a break of around a month “to move the peace process forward”, the State Department said in its statement.


8. US ends special trade treatment for India

• The US will end preferential trade status for India next week, President Donald Trump has confirmed amid a deepening row over protectionism. India had been the largest beneficiary of a scheme that allows some goods to enter the US duty-free. However that status will end on Wednesday, Mr Trump said. In March he announced that it would be revoked because India had failed to provide adequate access to its markets, but Mr Trump gave no date.
• On Friday he said: “It is appropriate to terminate India’s designation as a beneficiary developing country.” Is trade spoiling the Trump-Modi bromance?
• India no longer fastest-growing economy
• India had said the move would have a “minimal economic impact”, but it comes at a time lower growth and record unemployment in the country.

9. New Zealand thrash Sri Lanka by 10 wickets

• New Zealand crushed Sri Lanka without losing a single wicket in Cardiff on June 1, 2019 to begin their World Cup campaign in style after seamers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson had skittled their opponents out for 136.
• Kiwi opener Martin Guptill then smashed an unbeaten 51-ball 73, while Colin Munro made 58 not out to help the New Zealanders reach their target in less than 17 overs. Earlier, Kiwis skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl on a pitch so green it was indistinguishable from the outfield, and he was rewarded when Henry trapped Lankan opener Lahiru Thirimanne leg-before in the first over.
• Canterbury seamer Henry, who conceded 107 runs in a warm-up match against West Indies earlier this week, continued his resurgence to remove Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis in the ninth over to leave the Sri Lankan middle order exposed at 46-3.


10. Australia steer past spirited Afghanistan

• Three-wicket hauls from Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa, coupled with half-centuries from Aaron Finch and David Warner, saw Australia overcome Afghanistan in their opening fixture of ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019.
• The defending champions triumphed by eight wickets with 15.2 overs to spare, extending their ODI win-streak to nine.
