1. ITP issues first driving license to transgender woman

• The Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) on November 26, 2018 issued a license to a transgender woman for the first time on the special directives of the capital police`s chief.
• The inspector general of police (IGP) issued the directives that the woman, Laila Ali, had been driving her car without a license for a decade.
• Laila Ali, who is listed as Mohammad Ali on her CNIC and driving license, told Dawn she was visiting the IGP office to discuss the issues and problems faced by the transgender community in the federal capital, including victimisation by the police.

2. Project promoting cooperation in education between Pakistan, UK launched

• The Pakistan-UK Education Gateway Program was launched at the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Secretariat on November 26, 2018.
• The program is aimed at cooperation between the education sectors of Pakistan and the UK and will include split PhD programs, fullfledged PhD programs, student and faculty exchange.
• The involvement of funding agencies, research entities, ensuring quality and governance at higher education institutions and capacity building are also part of the program.

3. Rear Admiral Adnan takes over Logistic Command of Navy

• Rear Admiral Adnan Khaliq has taken over the Logistic Command of Pakistan Navy in an impressive change of Command ceremony held at PN Dockyard on November 26, 2018.
• He took over the command from Rear Admiral Imran Ahmad. Rear Admiral Adnan Khaliq would now be In-charge of Logistic support to all PN Units, Ships, Establishments and repair/ maintenance facilities of Pakistan Navy.
• A guard of honour was also presented to the newly-appointed Commander Logistics during the ceremony. Later, Commanding Officers of the units under Command were also introduced to Commander Logistics

4. Pakistan, Malaysia vow to strengthen defence ties

• Pakistan and Malaysia have agreed to promote mutual cooperation and defence ties to further strengthen their relations.
• The understanding came at a meeting between Chief of Royal Malaysian Air Force General Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hj Affendi Bin Buang and the Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan on November 26, 2018.
• The Air Chief briefed the visiting dignitary about ongoing indigenization projects being taken up by the PAF in recent years.
• The Chief of Malaysian Air Force appreciated the sound professionalism of PAF its key role in the war on terrorism.

5. Communications ministry gets parliamentary secretary

• Prime Minister Imran Khan November 26, 2018 appointed Member National Assembly (MNA) Mian Muhammad Shafique as Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Communications.
• Parliamentary Secretary is supposed to play a role of mediator between the national assembly and his/her respective ministries and divisions by carrying out day-to-day business in the house on behalf of the minister.
• Shafique is a senior politician who got elected as member of National Assembly from District Lodhran in the general elections of 2018. A notification regarding his appointment was issued by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs on November 26, 2018.
• Meanwhile, two other MNAs Syma Nadeem and Muhammad Ameer Sultan were also appointed as Parliamentary Secretaries for the Ministry of Inter Provincial Coordination and Ministry of National Food Security and Research, respectively.

6. India lays foundation stone of Kartarpur corridor

• Indian Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on November 26, 2018 laid the foundation stone of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor, which will facilitate easy passage to Sikh pilgrims to the historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.
• The decision to build the passage from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to the International Border was taken by the Union Cabinet on Nov 22.
• Kartarpur is located in Shakargarh in Narowal district of Pakistan`s Punjab province. Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, had spent more than 18 years of his life there. The Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara is located on the banks of the Ravi River, about three-four kilometres from the border in Pakistan.
• The Indian Punjab government had launched year-long celebrations to commemorate the 550th `Parkash Purb` (birth anniversary) of Guru Nanak Dev on Nov 23.

7. ‘Misinformation’ chosen as word of the year by Dictionary.com

• Misinformation, as opposed to disinformation, was chosen on November 26, 2018 as Dictionary.com’s word of the year on the tattered coattails of “toxic”, picked earlier this month for the same honour by Oxford Dictionaries in these tumultuous times.
• Jane Solomon, a linguist-in-residence at Dictionary, said in a recent interview that her site’s choice of “mis” over “dis” was deliberate, intended to serve as a “call to action” to be vigilant in the battle against fake news, flat earthers and anti-vaxxers, among other conduits.
• The rampant spread of misinformation is really providing new challenges for navigating life in 2018.
• Misinformation has been around for a long time, but over the last decade or so the rise of social media has really, really changed how information is shared.

8. Chinese scientist claims making world`s first gene-edited babies

• A scientist in China claims to have created the world`s first genetically-edited babies, a move that would be a groundbreaking medical first but which has generated a barrage of criticism.
• Chinese university professor He Jiankui posted a video on YouTube saying that the twin girls, born a few weeks ago, had had their DNA altered to prevent them from contracting HIV.
• The professor, who was educated at Stanfordin the US and works from a lab in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, said their DNA was modified using CRISPR, a technique which allows scientists to remove and replace a strand with pinpoint precision.
• The development emerged on November 26, 2018 in an article published by industry journal the MIT Technology Review, which referenced medical documents posted online by He`s research team to recruit couples f or the experiments.

9. Nasa`s probe lands safely on Mars, sends picture

• Nasa`s Mars lander InSight touched down safely on the surface of the Red Planet on November 26, 2018 to begin its two-year mission as the first spacecraft designed to explore the deep interior of another world.
• Engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), near Los Angeles, said the successful landing was confirmed by signals relayed to Earth from one of two miniature satellites that were launched along with InSight and flying past Mars when it arrived shortly before 2000 GMT Minutes after the landing, JPL controllers received a fuzzy photograph of the probe`s new surroundings on Martian soil.
• Members of the mission control team burst into applause and cheered in relief as they received data showing that the spacecraft had survived its perilous descent to the Martian surface.
• The landing capped a six-month journey of 548 million kilometres from Earth, following its launch from California in May.

10. `The last emperor of Italian cinema` Bertolucci dies

• Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci, whose films include Last Tango in Paris and 1900, died on November 26, 2018 aged 77.
• Considered one of the giants of world cinema, Bertolucci was the only Italian ever to win the Oscar for best film, snapping up the award in 1988 to The Last Emperor.
• He had gained notoriety for his 1972 erotic drama Last Tango in Paris starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, which featured a controversial sex scene involving butter.
• Bertolucci`s biographical masterpiece about the last Chinese emperor won a total of nine Oscars, all of those for which it was nominated.
