  1. Government launched the Economic Survey 2017-18
  • The government on April 26, 2018 launched the Economic Survey 2017-18 revealing that economy has shown a better performance, though government missed on most of the key targets.
  • It showed that the targets of inflation, exports, agriculture and services sector had been successfully achieved.
  • The performance in some major areas like GDP growth, budget deficit, industrial growth, savings and investments and tax collection remained below the mark but it was not too disappointing.
  • “The GDP growth rate has recorded at 5.8 percent, which is highest in last 13 years,” said Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal.
  • The government’s economic team drew the comparison of economic situation of the outgoing fiscal year with the situation when the PML-N government took charge in 2013.

  1. Islamabad High Court disqualified Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif
  • In another major blow to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz months before the general elections, the Islamabad High Court on April 26, 2018 disqualified Foreign Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif for not disclosing his salary drawn from a UAE company.
  • Hours after the IHC verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan formally de-notified Mr Asif as a member of the National Assembly.
  • `Respondent [Khawaja Asif] was not qualified to contest the general election of 2013 from NA-110 as he did not fulfil the conditions described under Article 62(1) (f) of the Constitution, read with Section 99(1)(f) of the Act of 1976,` declared a three-judge special bench of the IHC comprising Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani deciding a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Usman Dar.
  1. Pakistan calls for peaceful settlement of Afghan conflict
  • The Foreign Office on April 26, 2018 urged all warring factions of Afghanistan to seek a peaceful settlement of the conflict.
  • `During the past 17 years, the pursuit of a military option has only added to the sufferings and miseries of the Afghan people.
  • On April 25, 2018, the Afghan Taliban announced that they would start their annual spring offensive codenamed Al Khandag.
  • The announcement poured cold water on the hopes of possible peace talks.
  • Back in February, Afghanistan`s President Ashraf Ghani had offered unconditional talks to the Taliban. The militant group did not respond to the offer and analysts had speculated that their silence meant that they were thinking about accepting it.
  1. Punjab cabinet approves bill to regularise 200,000 contract employees
  • The ruling PML-N government in its cabinet meeting of the tenure approved on April 26, 2018 the Punjab Regularization of Service Bill of 2018 to regularise the services of contract employees that enter civil service after meeting certain criteria.
  • The bill, after the Punjab Assembly approve it, will institutionalise recruitment and prevent hazards of contractual appointment, including political inductions and abrupt termination of services.
  • Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed the officials to fine tune the bill with minor adjustments for tabling in the Punjab Assembly. The Punjab Regularisation of Service law will benefit some 200,000 contractual employees, mostly in education and health departments.
  • The Punjab cabinet approved amendments to the Registration Act, 1908; Punjab Fisheries Ordinance, 1961 and Fisheries Act, 1999
  1. Pakistan, Germany to strengthen defence ties
  • Pakistan and Germany have agreed to explore new avenues of cooperation to further diversify and strengthen their bilateral defence relations.
  • The two countries came to the consensus during a meeting between visiting German Vice Chief of Defence Vice Admiral Joachim Ruhle and Secretary Defence Zamir-ul-Hassan Shah in Rawalpindi on April 26, 2018.
  • Secretary Defence briefed the visiting dignitary about the achievements of armed forces of Pakistan in securing the border areas with Afghanistan through Operation “Zarb-e-Azb” and the ongoing Operation “Rad-ul-Fasad” under the National Action Plan.

  1. Rs309b for Mohmand dam approved
  • The Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet on April 26, 2018 approved the Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project at a cost of Rs309.558 billion.
  • Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi chaired the ECC meeting and approved.
  • The dam will be a multi-purpose project which, besides producing 800MW electricity, will have a storage capacity of 1,594 million cubic meters of water that can be used for irrigation, flood mitigation and supply of drinking water to Peshawar and FATA.

  • The US Senate voted on April 26, 2019 to approve former CIA director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, after a bruising battle by Democrats against President Donald Trump`s nominee.
  • Pompeo, who earned Trump`s confidence after a year at the CIA, was accused by Democrats as being too bellicose and harbouring anti-Muslim and homophobic sentiments.
  • But after barely getting the nomination past the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Pompeo was easily confirmed by the entire body in a vote of 57-42, with a handful of Democratic senators facing tough re-election battles voting in favour.
  • The approval came in time for Pompeo to lead the US delegation to Nato foreign minister talks in Brussels this weekend and to arrange a summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the coming months.
  1. Kim, Moon to meet at military demarcation line
  • North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un and the South’s president Moon Jae-in will meet at the Military Demarcation Line that divides the peninsula before their summit.
  • Moon will greet his visitor at the concrete blocks that mark the border between the two Koreas in the Demilitarized Zone
  • When Kim steps over the line he will become the first North Korean leader to set foot in the South since the Korean War ended 65 years ago
  1. China sends bombers around Taiwan
  • China flew bombers and fighter jets around Taiwan, in a new show of force that the defence ministry said was directed at “independence forces” on the self-ruled island.
  • H-6K bombers, early warning aircraft, reconnaissance planes and several types of fighter jets took off from multiple airports for “combat drills”.
  • The planes flew over Bashi Strait, south of Taiwan and the Miyako Strait, near Japan’s Okinawa Island, it said.
  • The air force said its H-6K bombers have completed several drills that involved circling Taiwan since April 18 “to strengthen its capacity to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity”.
  1. Afghan deputy governor shot dead
  • Gunmen killed a provincial deputy governor and three others in an ambush in Afghanistan on April 26, 2018, officials said, as the Taliban carried out a spate of attacks across the country after launching their spring offensive.
  • Afghanistan’s largest militant group announced the start of their new operation dubbed Al Khandaq on April 25, 2018, vowing to target US forces and their “internal supporters”.
  • Qamaruddin Shekib, deputy governor for the restive Logar province near Kabul, his two bodyguards and another man were attacked as they drove towards the Afghan capital.
