- Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi offers tax amnesty

- At the fag end of its five-year term, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government on April 5, 2018 unveiled a populist economic reforms package (ERP) envisaging another `one-time` amnesty scheme to whiten undeclared assets at home and abroad, reduction in income tax rates for existing taxpayers and issuance of dollar denominated bond.
- The package was announced by Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi without prior approval of the federal cabinet, almost 20 days ahead of the federal budget and 55 days before the PML-Ntenure comes to an end on May 31. The package will come into force through a presidential ordinance soon.
- Working with India, Pakistan to settle dam controversy, says World Bank
- The World Bank confirmed on April 5, 2018 that it had received Pakistan`s complaint on the completion of the Kishanganga hydropower plant by India and was working with Islamabad and New Delhi for an amicable resolution of the dispute.
- `We confirm receiving the letter fromPakistanearlierthisweekregarding the Indus Waters Treaty,` a spokesperson for the bank told in Washington. `The World Bank continues to work with both countries to resolve the most recent disagreement in an amicable manner and to safe-guard the Treaty.
- Pakistan complained that India has violated a World Bank-mandated pause, placed in 2016, by completing the controversial Kishanganga project.
- Pakistan, Russia to enhance military cooperation
- Pakistan and Russia have agreed to enhance cooperation in training of Armed Forces personnel in Naval field and conduct of wider range joint military exercises.
- The agreement was reached during a meeting between Russian Defence Minister General Sergey Shoygu with Pakistan’s defence Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan in Moscow on April 5, 2018.
- Both the ministers met on sidelines of the Moscow security conference. They also discussed identical views of Pakistan and Russia on international issues, particularly regarding sustainable peace in Afghanistan, establishment of energy corridors and combating violent extremism.
- Chinese, Russian FMs assail US `unilateralism
- The foreign ministers of Russia and China jointly denounced what they described on Thursday as the unilateralism of the United States, criticism that underlined their growing rapport on global issues.
- Speaking in Moscow af ter talks with his Russian counterpart, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi strongly criticised Washington`s move to hike tarif fs on Chinese products.
- `If the US thinks that it can get advantages through protectionism, its calculus is wrong,` Wang warned.
- UK opens military base in Bahrain
- Britain opened its first permanent military base in the Middle East in more than four decades on April 5, 2018 in the Persian Gulf country of Bahrain, giving the UK an expansive presence along key international shipping routes.
- The UK Naval Support Facility can house up to around 500 Royal Navy personnel, including sailors, soldiers and airmen, in a region where maritime security ensures oil shipments and goods make it from Asia toEurope. British officials have described it as the first permanent British base east of the Suez Canal since 1971.

- Qatar introduces national service for women
- Qatar is introducing national service for women for the first time while extending the time served in the military by conscripted men, under a law issued by the country’s Emir.
- Women aged over 18 will be able to volunteer for national service under the law, which comes into immediate affect, while men will now serve a year instead of three months, on April 5, 2018.
- Saudis intercept missile near Yemen border
- The Saudi-led military coalition said April 5, 2018 it shot down a missile fired by Yemen’s Shiite Huthi rebels who said they targeted storage facilities of the kingdom’s oil giant Aramco.
- “The debris fell on residential areas and we have no report of human losses or material damage,” he said. Aramco said its facilities in Jizan, in southwestern Saudi Arabia, were “intact” and operating normally, after pictures were posted on social media of a fire sparked by a missile attack.
- The Huthi rebels said on their Al-Masirah television channel they had targeted Aramco storage tanks in Jizan.
- ‘1.5bn sensitive documents on internet’
- Some 1.5 billion sensitive online files, from pay stubs to medical scans to patent applications, are visible on the open internet, security researchers said on April 5, 2018.
- Researchers from the cybersecurity firm Digital Shadows said a scanning tool used in the first three months of 2018 found mountains of private data online from people and companies across the world.
- The unprotected data amounted to some 12 petabytes, or four thousand times larger than the “Panama Papers” document trove which exposed potential corruption in dozens of countries. “These are files that are freely available” to anyone with minimal technical knowledge, said Rick Holland, a vice president at Digital Shadows.
- Talha Talib wins first medal for Pakistan in C’wealth Games
- Talha Talib, an 18-year-old weightlifter from Gujranwala, on April 5, 2018 won the first medal for Pakistan in the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia’s Gold Coast. Talib, competing in the 62kg category, lifted a total of 283kg to claim the bronze medal in the 21st Commonwealth Games.
- He also created a Commonwealth Games record by lifting 132kg in the snatch event. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznl Bidin grabbed gold medal while Papua New Guinea’s More Baru won the silver medal in the category. However, there was little to cheer in the day for Pakistani fans
- Movie star Salman Khan jailed for poaching deer; four stars freed
- Indian movie actor Salman Khan was on April 5, 2018 sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted in a 19-year-old blackbuck poaching case by a court in Jodhpur.
- Chief Judicial Magistrate (Jodhpur Rural) also imposed a fine of Rs10,000 on Khan. The actor was taken to the Central Jail in Jodhpur from the court.
