  1. Sindh minister Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani and his wife found shot dead
    • Mystery surrounded the case of seasoned Pakistan Peoples Party politician and senior Sindh minister Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani and his wife Fariha Razzak Haroon, a former provincial assembly member and long-time media professional, who were found shot dead inside their Defence house on February 1, 2018
    • Speculation swirled around the reason for the deadly episode with police investigators reluctant to describe it either as a double murder or a suicide
    • Mr Bijarani`s body was found on a sofa in a small study room with a pistol believed to be the weapon used in the killings lying next to his feet. Around six feet away lay Ms Haroon`s body near the room`s door
  2. Senator Nehal Hashmi jailed over contempt of court
    • Eight months after his tirade against the judiciary, the Supreme Court on February 1, 2018 convicted ruling party Senator Nehal Hashmi of committing contempt of court and sent him to jail for one month, besides disqualifying him from holding any public of fice for five years
    • Dismissing his unconditionalapology which he had submitted during the last hearing on Jan 24, a three-judge SC bench headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and comprising Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Dost Muhammad Khan also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on Mr Hashmi
  3. Kabul repeats charges after `productive talks` in Islamabad
    • Afghanistan on February 1 2018 repeated allegations against Pakistan despite a consensus in capitals of both countries that a visit by Afghan security chiefs to Islamabad a day earlier had been successful
    • The claim by the interior minister and the NDS chief was, however, immediately challenged by the Pakistan embassy in Kabul which said that no assurances had been given with regards to responding to the information shared by the Afghan government
  4. Senator Haji Saifullah Bangash passes away
    • PPP Senator Haji Saifullah Bangash died of heart failure at a private hospital on February 1, 2018. He was 70.
    • A businessman by profession, Mr Bangash had won Senate elections in March 2012 on a PPP ticket. He was among those 54 senators who are set to retire on March 11.
    • He belonged to Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  5. Pakistan, India to work together for turtle conservation
    • A regional plan for turtle conservation has been developed by experts representing five countries, including Pakistan and India, at a recently held meeting of Northern Indian Ocean Marine Turtle Task Force in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
    • Other countries participating in the plan are Bangladesh, the Maldives and Sri Lanka
    • The Pakistani team was represented by deputy director at the ministry of climate change Samar Hussain Khan and officials of World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P)
  6. United Arab Emirates opens world`s longest zip line
    • The United Arab Emirates claimed a record on February 1, 2018 with the opening of the world`s longest zip line, measuring 2.83 kilometres in length
    • Guinness World Records officials certified the zip line in Ras al-Khaimah on the same day the attraction opened to the public
    • The Jebel Jais Flight takes thrill-seekers atop the country`s largest mountain peak, from a launch pad 1,680 metres (5,512 feet) above sea level.
  7. Saudi, UAE envoys meet Yemen rivals to end standoff
    • Saudi and Emirati envoys shuttled between Yemeni government forces and besieging southern separatists in second city Aden in a bid to end a tense standoff after days of deadly infighting
    • Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are the two major contributors to a military coalition that has backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi since he fled into exile in 2015.
  8. SC to hold court on Saturdays, Sundays
    • In order to provide early and immediate justice to the people, Supreme Court has decided to hold the court on Saturdays and Sundays.
    • Registrar office has directed the concerned officials to ensure their attendance and also issued order for implementation on the court order.
    • The court order said that four officers of every department must be available on Sunday
  9. WWII bomb defused in Hong Kong after thousands evacuated
    • A wartime bomb was defused in Hong Kong on February 1, 2018 after forcing a busy commercial district into lockdown, with roads closed and thousands evacuated from surrounding shops, hotels and offices
    • It was the second time within a week that an American bomb dropped during WWII had been discovered at a harbourfront construction site in Wan Chai

  10. Pakistan clinch third spot at U-19 World Cup after washout
    • Two-time champions Pakistan claimed third position at the ICC U-19 World Cup after their thirdplace playoff against Afghanistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled at the Queenstown Events Centre on February 1, 2018
    • Afghanistan and Pakistan were in Group `D` and though Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in their opener, Pakistan topped the group after Afghanistan suffered a surprise defeat against Ireland in their last group match.
