  1. Senate Election 2018: Over 140 file nomination papers for Senate polls
    • Over 140 candidates have filed nomination papers for the coming Senate elections, according to the details released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)
    • The elections for 52 seats from the four provinces, the federal capital and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas are to be held on March 3.
    • A total of 52 senators in the house of 104 will retire on March 11 after completion of their sixyear term.
  2. National security committee reviews Pak-US ties
    • A day after the military`s top brass reviewed the `geo-strategic and security environment` in the context of US policy on the region, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) went into a session on February 8, 2018 to receive briefing from officials of the defence and foreign affairs ministries on US-Pakistan ties.
    • The head of the committee, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, who in the past had informed reporters about discussions taken place during the in-camera meetings, on February 8, 2018 refused to give any media briefing due to the amendment to the rules recently passed by the Senate providing for punishment to the members found guilty of leaking out details of in-camera proceedings of the house.

    • Pakistan and Jordan on February 8, 2018 agreed to enhance bilateral trade as King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein opened his two-day working visit to Pakistan
    • Soon after his arrival, King Abdullah went for a meeting with Prime Minister Shahid Khagan Abbasi at the PM House where a formal reception ceremony was held
    • The Jordanian king is visiting Pakistan after 11 years on the invitationof President Mamnoon Hussain. He is leading a high-level delegation of Jordanian officials.
  4. Mobin reappointed Narda chief
    • Usman Yousaf Mobin was re-appointed as chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) for another three-year term.
    • “The federal government is pleased to appoint Usman Yousaf Mobin as the chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on existing terms and conditions, for three years in terms of Section 3 of the Nadra Ordinance, 2000, with immediate effect and until further orders,”
    • Mr Mobin was made the Nadra chief for three years in 2015 and, prior to the expiry of his tenure on Feb 5, the post was advertised on Dec 23, 2017, following which over 180 applications for the post were received
  5. China agrees to accommodate Pakistan`s concerns on FTA
    • After intense negotlations, China on February 8, 2018 agreed to accommodate the demands of Pakistani exporters in the amended Free Trade Agreement (FTA) which is expected to be signed in March.
    • The demands and concerns of local exporters were shared during the 9th round of two-day negotiations on China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement which began on February 7, 2018.
  6. ADB appoints new regional head
    • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed Werner Liepach as the new Director General for its Central and West Asia Department (CWRD)
    • As Director General, Mr Liepach will lead ADB`s engagement with 10 countries in the region, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
    • He will oversee ADB`s regional portfolio, which now stands at $18.6 billion, comprising 155 projects
  7. US Senate panel okays proposal to sanction Myanmar officials
    • The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed legislation on February 8, 2018 to impose targeted sanctions and travel restrictions on senior Burmese military officials responsible for human rights atrocities against the Rohingya people.
    • The legislation was joint written by two senior lawmakers, Senator John McCain, a Republican who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Ben Cardin, a senior Democrat in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee

    • The prosecutor at the International Criminal Court on February 9, 2018 unveiled new probes focusing on the deadly war on drugs in the Philippines and alleged abuses during Venezuela’s political unrest

    • North Korea staged a military parade in Pyongyang February 8, 2018 to mark the 70th anniversary of its armed forces, putting its intercontinental ballistic missiles on show just a day before the Winter Olympics open in the South.
    • The nuclear-armed North is on an Olympics-linked charm offensive – sending a troupe of performers, hundreds of female cheerleaders, and the sister of leader Kim Jong Un to South Korea
  10. Afghanistan becomes main theatre of operations for US Air Force
    • Afghanistan has become the US Air force’s main theatre of operations following troop reductions in Iraq and Syria
    • “Afghanistan has become CENTCOM’s main effort, thanks to the recent successes in Iraq and Syria,” said head of NATO’s Air Command in Afghanistan James Hecker,
    • “This has allowed CENTCOM to shift more assets our way, which will significantly improve our ability to assist the Afghans,” he said during a Pentagon conference call. “We officially became the main effort for Centcom on February 1.”
