  1. NAB arrests top bureaucrat Fawad in Ashiyana scam
  • The National Accountability Bureau on July 2, 2018 arrested Fawad Hassan Fawad, principal secretary to ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif and sent him to lock-up on charges of corruption and misuse of powers.
  • Fawad, a top bureaucrat who served on key posts for several years, was put behind bars shortly after he visited the headquarters of the anti-graft body to respond to allegations.
  • He will be produced before an accountability court by the NAB investigators July 6, 2018 (today).
  • The move comes only a day before an Islamabad-based accountability court is scheduled to give its verdict in the Avenfield property case against the former prime minister, which was reserved after months-long proceedings.
  • The senior bureaucrat was arrested by NAB in connection with the ongoing probe involving Ashiyana Housing Project, a government-sponsored housing scheme, to help low-income people get reasonable residences at affordable prices.
  1. Pakistan to buy four corvette ships from Turkey
  • The Ministry of Defence Production on July 5, 2018 signed a contract with Turkey for the acquisition of four MILGEM Class ships.
  • The ships will be equipped with modern stealth features, state-of-the-art 5th generation weapons and sensors including indigenously developed missile system.
  • The contract includes the complete transfer of technology and the transfer of intellectual proprietary rights to Pakistan for the design of these ships.
  • The first two ships will be built at Istanbul Naval Shipyard while the other two will be constructed at Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works.
  • MILGEM Class Ship is a capable and extremely potent platform, favourably comparable with any contemporary warship of modern navies.
  • The ship is equipped with modern stealth features, and state of the art 5th generation weapons and sensors including indigenously developed missile system hence configured to undertake multifaceted operations in all domains of naval warfare.
  1. Pakistan offers goods, services to Qatar for FIFA WC 2022
  • Pakistan has offered its goods and services to Qatar, which is going to host the FIFA World Cup 2022.
  • “As Qatar is preparing to host the FIFA World Cup 2022, substantial scope exists for procurement of goods and services from Pakistan,” said Federal Minister for Commerce and Textile Mian Misbah-ur-Rehman.
  • Pakistan has offered supply of footballs and sports equipment, construction materials, home textile and quality furniture to hotel industry, food products and skilled labour force to Qatar for the next football World Cup.
  • “Pakistan also wished to pursue ‘bilateral trade agreement’ with Qatar and invited them to invest in agriculture, food processing, LNG and petrochemical industry in Pakistan. Similarly, Gwadar Port Authority can offer excellent opportunity for trance-shipment to Qatar. The government of Pakistan desires long and historic relationship between Pakistan and Qatar and this relationship should be translated into enhanced trade and sustainable partnership,” the minister added.
  1. Mother Teresa India charity sold babies
  • A woman working at Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand has been arrested for allegedly selling a 14-day-old baby.
  • Two other women employees from the centre have been detained and are being questioned about other possible cases. Police took action after the state’s Child Welfare Committee (CWC) registered a complaint.
  • Police also recovered 140,000 rupees ($2,150) from the centre, which is located in Jharkhand’s capital, Ranchi.
  • Missionaries of Charity, which has many centres in India, runs homes for unmarried pregnant women. But they stopped arranging adoptions three years ago when they were unable to comply with new adoption laws.
  • The CWC has transferred 13 pregnant women who were living in the missionary’s Ranchi centre to a different location. Nobel-laureate Mother Teresa, who died in 1997, founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950.
  1. Brazil SC removes minister amid corruption probe
  • Brazil’s Supreme Court has removed the nation’s labor minister from his post at the request of prosecutors, a source with knowledge of the matter said on July 5, 2018, just a day after authorities arrested multiple high-ranking executives in a separate graft sting.
  • The court removed Helton Yomura temporarily at the request of federal prosecutors who are investigating a wide-ranging corruption scheme in which politicians and labor officials allegedly offered fraudulent union licenses in exchange for kickbacks, said the source, who requested anonymity as the matter in not yet public.
  • In a statement, federal prosecutors said they executed search warrants in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil’s Federal District, taking three people into custody. Yomura was a “target” of the investigation, they said, without offering any further details.
  1. Finance ministry opens account for dams fund
  • The Ministry of Finance on July 5, 2018 opened an account under the title of `DIAMERBHASHA AND MOHMAND DAM FUND-2018`.
  • The account was opened in pursuance of July 4, 2018`s order of the Supreme Court to the federal government, WAPDA and the executive authority to take effective measures in light of unanimous decisions of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) to develop the 4,500MW Bhasha dam and 700MW Mohmand dam, says a short order, the detailed reasons of which will be given later.
  • On July 5, 2018, Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar formally deposited Rs1 million as a donation in the account from his personal account.
  • An SC announcement says that payments in the fund will be received at all branches of the State Bank of Pakistan, all treasuries and branches of the National Bank of Pakistan and all other scheduled banks.
  • The fund may receive donations from both domestic and international donors and contributions from abroad which will be received at all branches of these banks where such branches exist.
  1. Record number of 171 women in the run for NA general seats
  • In what is the highest number of women candidates in Pakistan`s electoral history, as many as 171 women candidates will be in the run against 272 general seats of the National Assembly across the country.
  • According to an analysis of the complete list of candidates for the coming general elections slated to be held on July 25, 105 women have been awarded party tickets while another 66 will be contesting as independent candidates.
  • The number of women candidates in 2013 elections was 135 with the number of independent candidates higher than those of party ticket holders 74 and 61, respectively. In 2008 elections the number of women candidates was as low as 72, including 41 party ticket holders and 31 independents.
  • This time the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has awarded the maximum number of tickets (19) to women candidates 11 in Punjab, five in Sindh and three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Muttahida Majlisi-Amal (MMA) has awarded 14 tickets to women candidates eight in Punjab and six in Sindh. The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has fielded 11 women candidates seven in Punjab and four in Sindh. The Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) has given tickets to 11 women five in Punjab, three in Sindh, two in KP and one in Balochistan.
  1. EU Parliament rejects copyright law in win for US tech giants
  • The European Parliament rejected July 7, 2018 a highly controversial EU copyright law proposal that has pitted Beatles legend Paul McCartney against internet giants and the creators of Wikipedia.
  • Lawmakers are now expected to return in September to the plans, which are aimed at ensuring creators of creative content – whether music, movies or news – are paid fairly in a digital world. The draft law was firmly resisted by major US tech giants as well as advocates of internet freedom, with some campaigners warning it could even spell the end of viral “memes” or jokes.
  • Members of European Parliament meeting in the eastern French city of Strasbourg voted 318 against the measure, 278 in favour, with 31 abstentions.
  • The vote would have given MEPs the mandate to start negotiations with member states for a finalised law which Austria, holder of the EU’s six-month rotating presidency, would like finished by the end of the year.

  • The graduation ceremony of the 50th Combat Commanders` Course at Airpower Centre of Excellence, Sargodha, was held on July 4, 2018.
  • Air Chief Marshal Mujahid Anwar Khan, Chief of the Air Staff, was the chief guest Speaking on the occasion, he said: `Being the combatant of this elite organisation, upholding the pledge to `Live For` `Fight For` and `Die For` the country and the PAF is our first and foremost duty.

  • The Chief of the Air Staff Trophy for the Best Combat Commander was awarded to Wing Commander Fahad Sajid Peerzada, while Air Officer Commanding Air Defence Command Trophy was awarded to Squadron Leader Tayyab Saeed Qureshi.
  1. Pakistan outgun Australia in dress rehearsal for final
  • Opener Fakhar Zaman blazed his way to a career best 73 while young paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi grabbed three top-order wickets as Pakistan completed a resounding 45-run win over Australia on July 5, 2018 in the Twenty20 International tri series.
