1. Trump offers mediation on Kashmir at Modi`s request

• US President Donald Trump on July 22, 2019 expressed his willingness to mediate between India and Pakistan to resolve the 70-year-old Kashmir dispute if both the neighbouring countries asked him for it.
• While addressing a joint news conference with the US president at the White House Oval Office on July 22, 2019, Prime Minister Imran Khan welcomed the offer and said the entire Subcontinent would pray for him if he helped resolve the dispute.
• `If I can help, I would love to be a mediator. If I can do anything to help, let me know,` said Mr Trump when a Pakistani journalist asked him if he would like to mediate between India and Pakistan on Kashmir.
• `I was with Prime Minister Modi two weeks ago and we talked about this subject (Kashmir). And he actually said would you like to be a mediator or arbitrator? I said, where? (Modi said) Kashmir,` Mr Trump explained.


2. CNIC mandatory for purchases over Rs50,000

• The Federal Board of Revenue has notified provisions making it mandatory for ordinary citizens to show Computer National Identity Card in case of purchase over Rs50,000 from a registered sales tax seller.
• In the case of a female buyer, the CNIC of her husband or father will be considered valid for the purchase.
• The law further provides that this condition will not apply if the value of purchases is below Rs50,000 in case sales are being made to an ordinary consumer.
• The main purpose of the CNIC condition is for documenting business-to-business transactions and few transactions in a value higher than Rs50,000 by limited number of consumers and that too from sales tax registered person.
• This condition will help avoid, unverifiable and fictitious business buyers which results in huge sales tax losses in the value chain.


3. Pakistan for enhancing naval co-op with UAE

• Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi is on an official visit to United Arab Emirates.
• During the visit, the Naval Chief called on Commander of the UAE Naval Forces, Chief of Staff UAE Armed Forces, UAE’s Defence Undersecretary in Dubai and also visited Shipbuilding Facility, Naval Forces Institute & Ghantout Naval Base at Abu Dhabi.
• Upon his arrival at Naval Headquarters in Dubai, the admiral was warmly received by Commander of the UAE Naval Forces, Rear Admiral (Pilot) Saeed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, said a statement issued by Pakistan Navy.
• A guard of honour was also presented to the Naval Chief at the occasion.

4. India launches moon mission, to probe south pole

• India launched a rocket into space on July 22, 2019 in an attempt to safely land a rover on the moon, its most ambitious mission yet in the effort to establish itself as a low-cost space power.
• If successful, the $146 million mission will allow Indian scientists to carry out studies on the presence of water at the moon`s south pole, unexplored by any other nation before.
• China, Russia and the United States are the only other nations to have sent missions to the moon.
• A live broadcast showed images of the rocket, carrying the unmanned Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft, blasting off from a space centre in southern India as thousands of onlookers cheered the launch, which was delayed for a week by a technical snag.


5. US sanctions Chinese trader for violating Iran restrictions

• The US is placing a leading Chinese oil importer on its sanctions blacklist for trading in Iranian crude, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced July 23, 2019.
• `As part of that maximum pressure campaign, I am announcing that the US is imposing sanctions on the Chinese entity Zhuhai Zhenrong and its chief executive Youmin Li,` Pompeo said in a speech.
• `They violated US law by accepting crude oil,` he said.
• The announcement was the latest step by Washington to ratchet up economic pressure on Tehran over its alleged military activities in the Middle East and its nuclear program by taking aim at business partners.


6. UN nuclear watchdog chief Amano, who oversaw Iran deal, dies

• The head of the UN`s nuclear watchdog, Yukiya Amano, has died after suffering poor health for some time, the International Atomic Energy Agency said on July 22, 2019, as international tensions run high over Iran`s nuclear activities.
• The longtime Japanese diplomat, who was 72, held the IAEA`s top job since December 2009.
• Amano died on July 18. But his family had only informed the IAEA late on July 21, 2019, `with the specific request not to disclose it until the family funeral had taken place on 22 July in a quiet atmosphere.` No details were given about the cause of death, but Amano had been ill for some months.
• During his 10 years at the helm, Amano oversaw the signing of a landmark deal in 2015 between Iran and six major powers Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States -under which the Islamic republic agreed to curb its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.


7. Iceland to honour first glacier lost to climate change

• Iceland is planning to mark the passing of Okjokull, its first glacier lost to climate change which threatens some 400 others on the subarctic island.
• On August 18, a plaque will be unveiled to Okjokull which translates to `OK glacier` in the west of Iceland, local researchers and their peers at Rice University in the United States, who initiated the project, said on Monday.
• The researchers hope that the memorial, entitled `A letter to the future,` will raise awareness about the decline of glaciers and the effects of climate change.


8. NASA prepares to send ‘first woman and next man’ on Moon in 2024

• As NASA marked the 50th anniversary of the historic first Moon landing, the U.S. space agency is preparing to take its next giant leap with the ambitious Artemis programme that could see the “first woman and the next man” walk on the lunar surface.
• Artemis is named after the twin sister of Apollo who is also the Goddess of the Moon and the hunt.
• NASA said the mission “encompasses all of our efforts to return humans to the Moon — which will prepare us and propel us on to Mars.”
• The programme to return astronauts to the lunar surface is planned to launch by 2024, according to the U.S. space agency.

9. Ex-Aussie tennis star McNamara dies after quiet cancer battle

• Australia`s Peter McNamara, who won three doubles Grand Slam titles and became a prominent coach after hanging up his racquet, has died at the age of 64 after a quiet battle with cancer.
• Melbourne man McNamara won five singles titles and 19in doubles and teamed up with compatriot Paul McNamee to win the Australian Open doubles in 1979 and Wimbledon twice in 1980 and 1982.
• After retiring in 1987, the former world number seven singles player enjoyed a successful coaching career, mentoring Mark Philippoussis, Grigor Dimitrov and Wang Qiang, among others.


10. Sirbaz climbs world’s 12th highest mountain Broad Peak

• Mountaineer Sirbaz Khan has successfully climbed the world’s 12th highest mountain Broad Peak.
• Serena Hotels Senior Manager Marketing and Communications Hussain Odhwani announced this and said Sirbaz climbed the Broad Peak (8047m) without using supplementary oxygen. He completed his summit on the July 12 at 2:25pm. The expedition was accompanied by four climbers in total, two members from Nepal and one each from the USA and Germany.
• Serena Hotels has been supporting Sirbaz Khan on his ‘Mission Summit 14’. Sirbaz aims to summit all 14 highest peaks above 8000m without oxygen. This was his fourth consecutive successful summit after K2 (8611m), Nanga Parbat (8126m) and Mount Lhotse (8516m).
