1. Govt writes to UK for ex-PM`s repatriation

• The government has written a letter to the UK authorities for repatriation of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif who it alleged violated the eight-week bail by staying in London for medical treatment for the past three-and-a-half months.
• The federal cabinet was informed about the development during a meeting presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan on March 3, 2020.
• `The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has written a letter to UK authorities so that Mr Prisoner [Nawaz Sharif] returns to the country,` Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said at a post-cabinet meeting press conference.

2. Kashmir, Palestine issues top OIC agenda: Dobeay

• Special envoy of Secretary Generalof the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Kashmir Yousef M. Al Dobeay on March 3, 2020 said that Kashmir and Palestine issues are at the top of his organisation`s agenda.
• Speaking at a press conference with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, he said: `The issue of Kashmir is very close to our heart and all members are on the same page regarding its resolution.
• Ambassador Al Dobeay is leading a six-member delegation which opened its five-day visit with a meeting with Foreign Minister Qureshi and later called on Prime Minister Imran Khan, chairman of the Kashmir Committee Fakhr Imam and representatives ofthe All Parties Hurriyet Conference
• OIC Headquarters is in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
• The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is an international organization founded in 1969, consisting of 57 member states


3. Display of cigarettes at points of sale banned

• The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) has finally succeeded in imposing a ban on display of cigarettes at sale points.
• This is a major development which will protect the new generation from the hazards of tobacco, says Dr Mohammad Zia, Technical Head of ministry`s Tobacco Control Cell.
• Dr Zia said now shopkeepers would have to keep the tobacco products at some hidden place.

4. Ajmal Wazir replaces Shaukat as head of KP information dep

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan on March 3, 2020 changed the portfolios of two members of his cabinet.
• A notification issued by the administration department said in the exercise of the powers conferred by subrule (4) of Rule 3 of the KP Government Rules of Business, 1985, the chief minister is pleased to change the portfolios of minister for information Shaukat Yousafzai and adviser to the chief minister on merged districts Ajmal Wazir.
• Mr Yousafzai got the labour and culture portfolio and Mr Wazir, who is also the chief minister`s spokesperson, that of information.

5. Cabinet approves Rs100m to procure 5,000 coronavirus testing kits

• Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah informed his cabinet on March 3, 2020 that he had ordered the purchase of 5,000 coronavirus testing kits and released Rs100 million for adopting preventive measures against the deadly virus in emergency situations.
• He was presiding over the cabinet meeting at CM House, which was attended by all provincial ministers, advisers, chief secretary and the provincial secretaries.
• CM Shah said when the first coronavirus case was diagnosed he convened a meeting and formed a task force.

6. UN challenges controversial law in India`s SC

• India described its contentious citizenship law as an internal issue on March 2, 2020 as the UN rights chief sought to join efforts challenging the legislation in the country`s highest court.
• `The Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter of India and concerns the sovereign right of the Indian parliament to make laws, foreign ministry spokesman Raveesh Kumar said.
• `We strongly believe that no foreign party has any locus standi onissues pertaining to India`s sovereignty.` Dozens of petitions filed in the Supreme Court, including by social rights activists and political parties, are challenging the law`s constitutionality.
• The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet informed India on Monday of its application to be a third party in one petition brought by a former civil servant, Kumar said. The court is hearing all the petitions together


7. Turkey downs Syrian plane in Idlib as tensions rise

• Turkey shot down a Syrian fighter jet in Syria`s Idlib province on March 2, 2020, marking the third such incident in as many days, as steady clashes between the two national armies continued over a Russia-backed Syrian government offensive near the Turkish border.
• State-run Syrian media said troops shot down a Turkish drone, keeping up a clash in the skies over the northwestern province that has gone on for days and signaled a new stage in the nine-year-old war.
• Ahead of a much-anticipated summit later this week between the presidents of Turkey and Russia, the two main power brokers in Syria, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov again laid the blame for the escalation squarely on Turkey


8. Trump talks to Taliban leader for 35 minutes

• President Donald Trump spoke by phone to the leader of the Taliban, the militant group and the US leader said on March 2, 2020, days after Washington signed a historic deal with the militants.
• Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, said he had `a very good talk with the leader of the Taliban`, without naming him.
• The 35-minute call came a day after the militants ended a partial truce and threw into doubt peace talks between Kabul and the militants that are due to begin on March 10, according to the US-Taliban agreement signed on Saturday


9. Study finds parrots understand probability

• Does Polly want a cracker? That all depends on statistics. Parrots can learn to choose based on probability, making them the first animal outside of the great ape family that uses statistical modelling in their decision-making process, researchers said on March 2, 2020.
• Wildlife experts taught six kea, a species of large parrot native to New Zealand renowned for their intelligence, to play a variation of a game designed to test their statistical understanding.
• The birds Blofeld, Bruce, Loki, Neo, Plankton and Taz were trained to associate black tokens with a food reward and orange pegs with none. During early tests, they used their beaks to pick up the black tokens and were given a treat

• Lahore Qalandars are off the mark, finally.
• Roused by the backing of a vociferious home crowd, a mammoth 155-run partnership between Ben Dunk and Samit Patel set up Qalandars` first victory of the fifth HBL Pakistan Super League when they beat Quetta Gladiators by 37 runs at the Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday.
• While Dunk absolutely plundered the Gladiators` bowling attack for 93 runs off 43 balls, Patel`s all-round effort a 71-ball 40 and 2-30 with his left-arm spin ensured Qalandars` reputation as mere pushovers was no longer valid. After Qalandars were put into bat, Samit and Dunk`s fourth wicket effort drove the home side to a first innings score of 209-5, which proved too much for the Gladiators batsmen
