  1. Kabul ready for talks with Taliban to `save country`
  • Afghan President Ashraf Ghani offered recognition of the Taliban as a legitimate political group on Wednesday as part of a proposed pohucal process that he said could lead to talks aimed at ending more than 16 years of war.
  • The offer, made at the start of an international conference aimed at creating a platform for peace talks, adds to a series of signals f rom both the Western backed government and the Taliban suggesting a greater willingness to consider dialogue.
  • Mr Ghani proposed a ceasefire and release of prisoners as part of a range of options including new elections, involving the militants, and a constitutional review as part of a pact with the Taliban to end a conflict that last year alone killed or wounded more than 10,000 Afghan civilians
  1. KP govt to pay prayer leaders stipend from current month
    • The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet on February 27, 2018 approved Rs10,000 monthly stipend for prayer leaders of mosques all over the province.
    • Chief Minister Pervez Khattak, who chaired the cabinet meeting, directed the relevant authorities to begin the stipend`s payment in the first week of the current month.
    • The cabinet was informed that the department had received the details of 20,699 mosque prayer leaders, who were eligible to get the monthly stipend.
  2. Pakistan will be on FATF `grey list` in June
    • Confirming that Pakistan would be on Financial Action Task Force`s (FATF) `grey list` in June, the Foreign Office on Wednesday said Islamabad would strive to overcome the shortcomings in its counter-illicit financing regime.
    • `Pakistan will be assigned to the `grey list` in June, once an action plan has been mutually negotiated,` FO spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal said at the weekly media briefing.
    • It was the first official confirmation that the FATF had at its last plenary session held on Feb 21-23 in Paris decided to place Pakistan in the category of jurisdictions monitored by the FATF`s International Cooperation Review Group, commonly known as the greylist.
  3. Astronomers detect signal of Universe’s first stars
    • A signal from the Universe’s first stars, born a cosmic heartbeat after the Big Bang, has been detected for the first time, astronomers said February 28, 2018, setting the science world aflutter.
    • The observation came after a decade-long quest, years earlier than expected, and was described by one excited observer as the biggest astronomical breakthrough since the Nobel-capped detection of gravitational waves in 2015.
  4. Suicide, gun attacks kill 6 security men in Quetta
    • A suicide bomber killed four paramilitary soldiers and a gunman shot dead two policemen in a separate attack in Quetta on February 28, 2018.
    • Four security men were martyred and eight others sustained injuries when a terrorist, wearing a jacket containing 8-10 kg explosive material, blew himself at an FC camp in Quetta.
  5. New JF-17 squadron established in Balochistan
    • Scaling up another milestone of achievement, PAF has established a new multi-role squadron of JF-17 aircraft which has been titled 28 Multirole Squadron.
    • The new 28 multirole squadron has consigned the mission to monitor aerial boundaries of the Pakistan’s Western borders.
    • A ceremony was organised at PAF Base Samungli in Quetta wherein, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman was the chief guest.
    • The Air Chief received guard of honour at the event and the JF-17 fly-past demonstration turned the event momentous
  6. Rohingya flee no man’s land after Myanmar threat
    • Hundreds of Rohingya living in no man’s land have left their makeshift camp and crossed into Bangladesh after soldiers from Myanmar used loudhailers to threaten them, community leaders said February 28, 2018.
    • Around 6,000 Rohingya have been living on a thin strip of land between the two countries since fleeing Myanmar in the wake of a brutal military crackdown on the Muslim minority in late August.
    • They were among the first to flee Myanmar when the violence erupted last year and set up shelters in no man’s land in the weeks before Bangladesh agreed to let the Rohingya into the country.
  7. PITB launches e-Khidmat mobile app
    • Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has said that Punjab IT Board in collaboration with the Punjab government has established the eighth mega state-of-the-art e-Khidmat Marakaz in Lahore.
    • The e-Khidmat mobile application to facilitate the general public for more than 17 government; district, provincial and federal; services under one roof, which would start its routine function from March 2 while it would be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif
  8. Moody’s forecasts Pak growth at 5.5pc in FY18, 5.6pc in FY19
    • US credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service on February 28, 2018 maintained B3 stable rating of Pakistan’s banking system considering steady fund inflows and growing economy, but it said high exposure to government securities poses ‘the biggest challenge’ to the sector.
    • “The outlook for banks in Pakistan (B3 stable) is stable over the next 12-18 months… driven by an accelerating economy and stable funding, while also taking into account the banks’ large holdings of low-rated government bonds, modest capital levels and high asset risks,” Moody’s said
  9. Punjab Assembly passes resolution against NAB
    • The Punjab Assembly passed a resolution on February 28, 2018, expressing unhappiness over the abuse of discretionary powers by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in contradiction to the fundamental human rights and dignity of the civil servants, and requested the federal government to take notice and action against these actions and to discuss the matter in the parliament.
    • The resolution presented by Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah stated that the House deeply resented all the actions taken by NAB in contradiction to the fundamental human rights and human dignity entitled to an individual by the Constitution which not only respected these rights but also vowed to establish them. The resolution deemed unlawful and immoral, the harassment, humiliation, defamation campaign and extrajudicial character assassination of the civil service officials.
