  1. Five policemen among nine killed in Lahore suicide attack
    • At least nine people, including five policemen, were killed and 20 others injured in a suicide attack on a police checkpostsetup near a rehgious gathering in Raiwind on March 14, 2018.
    • The suicide bomber blew himself up at the Nisar Police check-post near the Tableeghi Markaz after a cop tried to stop him from entering the venue where a bi-annual congregation was under way.`It was at around 9:20pm when a teenage boy approached the police personnel. When a policeman tried to stop him, he blew himself up injuring all of the 12 police personnel present there,` DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf told Dawn, adding that five of those cops, including two sub-inspectors, later succumbed to their injuries
  2. Hawking, who conquered disability and space, dies
    • Stephen Hawking, whose brilliant mind ranged across time and space though his body was paralysed by disease, died on March 14, 2018. He was 76.
    • Hawking died at his home in Cambridge, England, according to a statement by the University of Cambridge.
    • The best-known theoretical physicist of his time, H awking wrote so lucidly of the mysteries of space, time and black holes that his book, A Brief History of Time, became an international bestseller, making him one of science`s biggest celebrities since Albert Einstein.
  3. Punjab Assembly passes world’s first Sikh Marriage Act
    • The Punjab Assembly on March 14, 2018 passed nine bills including a private one that allowed, for the first time anywhere in the world, regularisation of the Sikh community marriages, clearing the list of legislation by the government nearing completion of its tenure.
    • PML-N MPA Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora had moved The Punjab Anand Karaj Bill, 2017. It was unanimously passed in full view of Sikh leaders from Canada and England who had come to the Punjab Assembly to watch the historic moment.
  4. Pakistan happier than India, Afghanistan: UN report
    • Pakistan is the 75th happiest country in the world, according to an annual survey issued on March 14, 2018.
    • Pakistan ranks higher than Bangladesh (115), India (133) and Afghanistan (145) in the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s (SDSN) 2018 World Happiness Report which ranked 156 countries according to things such as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, social freedom, generosity and absence of corruption.
    • Finland is the world’s happiest country and Burundi came in the bottom of the report.
    • The report found Americans were getting less happy even as their country became richer.
  5. Kamran Michael, Abdul Kareem made federal ministers
    • Two more ministers have been inducted into the federal cabinet on March 14, 2018. President Mamnoon Hussain administered oath to Senators Hafiz Abdul Kareem and Kamran Michael as federal ministers at a simple but impressive ceremony held here at the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
    • Federal Minister for SAFRON Lt. Gen.(Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch, Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Parliamentarians and Senior Government officials also attended the oath-taking ceremony.
    • The President congratulated both senators on assuming the office of federal ministers and hoped that they would discharge their responsibilities in an efficient manner.
    • Meanwhile, Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani called on President Mamnoon Hussain at the Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad on Wednesday.
  6. NACTA signs accord to promote safe donations
    • In a bid to streamline the flow of charity into right hands, the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) on March 14, 2018 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP) to promote safe donations through certified organisations.
    • The agreement was an effort by the government to ef fectively implement the recommendations of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) related to alleged terror funding through charities.
    • Nacta is also working in collaboration with all the police and counterterrorism departments (CTDs) of the country for effective implementation of the FATF recommendations.
  7. Karachi nuclear power plants heavily protected: IAEA chief
    • International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano has praised the arrangements made for the security of nuclear power plants operating in Karachi.
    • Mr Amano, who visited the plants on March 14, 2018, said that the new Kanupp II and III `plants are very heavily protected. Your country needs more electricity and you are committed to nuclear safety; you are working with the IAEA`.
    • `The IAEA greatly values cooperation with Pakistan inpeaceful uses of nuclear technology,` he said.
  8. Senior journalist Zamir Sheikh passes away
    • Resident editor of The Nation Karachi Zamir Sheikh passed away on March 14, 2018 night.
    • He was admitted to a private hospital where he breathed his last.
    • While he remained associated with the National Students Federation during his academic years, he started his journalistic career from Hyderabad in the 1980s and worked for different media houses before shifting to Karachi in the early 2000s.
    • Sheikh was also the author of two books What Went Wrong and Roshan Khayali se Mullaeyat Tak, the latter was recently launched at Karachi Press Club.
  9. Online service for company, NTN enrolment launched
    • The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) have launched a one-window facility for company and national tax number (NTN) registration.
    • The move is part of `Doing Business Reforms` and the one-window facility is based on back-end integration between SECP and FBR systems.
    • Through this facility, the entrepreneur will login to the SECP online portal eServices, get the company registered with the SECP and will receive the NTN automatically at company`s email address.
  10. Merkel sworn in for fourth term as chancellor
    • Angela Merkel was sworn in for her fourth term as German chancellor on March 14, 2018, putting an end to nearly six months of political drift in Europe`s biggest economy.
    • Lawmakers voted 364-315 to reelect Merkel, Germany`s leader since 2005. The coalition of Merkel`s conservative Christian Democratic Union, its Bavariaonly sister party, the Christian Social Union and the center-left Social Democrats has 399 of the 709 seats in parliament.
