March 22, 2019: National Current Affairs

1. Mahathir arrives on 3-day Pakistan visit

• Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived in Islamabad on March 21, 2019 evening on a three days visit to Pakistan.
• He was received by Prime Minister Imran Khan at the Nur Khan Airbase. Prime Minister welcomed the guest and also introduced Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Khusro Bakhtiar.
• He was given a 21-gun salute upon his arrival.
• During his stay, Prime Minister Mahathir will be the guest of honour at the Pakistan Day parade on March 23.
• Dr Mahathir, who is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Imran Khan, will be accompanied by a high-level delegation including leading businessmen.


2. Four PIA aircraft grounded due to bird-hits

• Four passengers aircraft of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were grounded three in Karachi and one in Lahore after being hit by birds within the space of a week.
• The grounding of two Boeing 777 and two Airbus 320 have caused financial loss to the national flag carrier and disturbed the flight schedule.
• PIA spokesperson Mashood Tajwar said four of the airline`s aircraft have been grounded within a week after being hit by birds during landing.
• `The flight schedule has been badly disturbed and more than a dozen flights have been delayed. One international flight was delayed for 17 hours due to the bird strikes.


3. First polio case of 2019 emerges in Khyber

• The first polio case of 2019 in district Khyber was detected as 12-month-old child of Bazaar Zakha Khel area of Landi Kotal was declared polio-positive, health department informed on March 21, 2019.
• The health official told that 12-month-old Umar Hayat, son of Hayat Gul, resident of remote and bordering area of Bazaar Zakha Khel had been declared polio infected after his tests were conducted in the laboratory of National Institute of Health.

4. Pro-independence JKLF banned by New Delhi

• New Delhi has banned a pro-independence group of India-held Kashmir as part of a crackdown on what it calls `separatist organisations`.
• A statement issued in Delhi said the Indian government had declared the Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) an `unlawful association` as it was trying to curb the activities of `secessionist organisations` posing a threat to the country`s unity and integrity.
• The group`s leader, Yasin Malik, was arrested recently in a counteroffensive against dissent following a Feb 14 suicide attack that killed over 40 Indian soldiers in the disputed region. Over a thousand people have been arrested since then.
• Many groups have been fighting for the Himalayan region`s independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989.


5. EU leaders give Britain `last chance` for orderly Brexit

• EU leaders on March 21, 2019 said Britain had a final chance to leave the bloc in an orderly fashion, having given the UK parliament an April 12 deadline to offer a new plan or choose to quit the bloc without a treaty.
• Arriving for a second day of a summit dominated by talks over Britain`s departure, Belgium`s prime minister said he hoped for a rational decision by British lawmakers to back the withdrawal treaty that May concluded with Brussels.
• Preparations for a no-deal, in which Britain would face sudden trade barriers and restrictions on business, were still underway, however, Charles Michel told reporters.


6. Indonesia hosts ‘historic’ South Pacific forum

• Indonesia hosted March 21, 2019 a forum meeting of South Pacific nations in Jakarta, local media reported. Fifteen countries participated in the Indonesia-South Pacific Forum (ISPF) themed “Our future, shared ocean, shared prosperity”.
• “The ISPF forum is aimed at increasing Indonesia’s role and presence in South-Pacific,” Antara quoted Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi as saying.
• “This meeting is a very historic one because, for the first time, Indonesia organizes a forum with the South-Pacific,” she added. The forum discussed maritime economy and connectivity in the region, Antara reported.


7. Brazil ex-president arrested in corruption

• Brazil’s former President Michel Temer was arrested on March 21, 2019 in Rio de Janeiro as part of a sprawling anti-corruption probe that has already claimed dozens of political and corporate scalps, media reports said.
• Temer, the predecessor of current President Jair Bolsonaro, was Brazil’s most unpopular leader ever and faced a number of corruption accusations on leaving office last year. He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
• Temer, a center-right politician, took over as a caretaker figure after the last Workers Party president, Dilma Rousseff, was impeached and removed from office in 2016.


8. US sanctions Iran nuclear researchers, warns against future work

• The United States on March 21, 2019 imposed sanctions on Iranian nuclear researchers, saying it wanted to warn young scientists to steer clear of any future effort to build a bomb.
• Sanctioning 14 individuals and 17 entities, US officials acknowledged that the nuclear work was in the past but said Washington wanted to make the targeted figures `radioactive.


9. Xi insists new Silk Road runs both ways as Italy signs up

• Chinese President Xi Jinping sought on March 21, 2019 to allay Western unease over his new Silk Road initiative by emphasising the vast infrastructure project`s two-way nature as he kicked off a whistle stop European tour in Rome.
• Italy has rolled out the red carpet for Xi, who will on Saturday sign a memorandum of understanding for Rome to join the $1 trillion Belt and Road Initiative despite misgivings in Washington and Brussels.
• Italy will be the first of the Group of Seven most-developed nations to sign up for the new Silk Road, which critics say is `predatory` and overwhelmingly favours China and Chinese companies.
• `Between us, there is no fundamental conflict of interest,` Xi told journalists after talks with his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella.

10. Australia beat Pakistan by eight wickets in first ODI

• Aaron Finch fired a century as Australia beat Pakistan by eight wickets in the first one-day international at Sharjah on March 21, 2019.
• Scores: Pakistan 280-5 in 50 overs; Australia 281-2 in 49 overs.
• Pakistan`s total score was built around a maiden century from Haris Sohail who hit six boundaries and a six.
• The 30-year-old made 115-ball 101 not out in his comeback match after returning home from the South Africa tour with a knee injury last year, lifting Pakistan to a fighting total in their 50 overs.
