1.  PM opens country`s largest airport after years of delay

  • After many announcements, delays and reannouncements, the Islamabad International Airport was finally inaugurated by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on May 1, 2018.
  • Built at a cost of Rs105 billion, the country`s largest airport is scheduled to welcome commercial flights from May 3, 2018.
  • The country`s first greenfield airport has been designed to cater to millions of passengers from all over the globe as Islamabad gets ready for increased commercial activity.
  • A greenfield construction project is one that is not constrained by existing infrastructure. The analogy refers to using unused land for building a new project from scratch.
  • The airstrip saw its first commercial touchdown on May 1, 2018 when the Pakistan International Airlines` flight PK-300 landed at around 11.15am. An hour after the successful landing, another PIA flight PK-301 took off for Karachi.
  • The first commercial flight to Islamabad International Airport (11A) on Tuesday was welcomed with a water cannon salute as it landed

2.  Army hands over Upper Dir check-post to police

  • The control of the Akhgram army check-post in Upper Dir district was handed over on May 1, 2018 to police personnel who have formally been deployed there for checking purposes.
  • Akhgram is the gateway to Upper Dir and the check-post was set up there about nine years ago.
  • The army authorities handed over responsibilities of the check-post at a function held at the check-post. Cap Hamza from the Pakistan Army and SHO Mazoom Khan from police force as well as elders of the area attended the function.
  • The army authorities had decided to hand over to the civilian administration the check-posts across Malakand division a month ago.

3.  Over 1.8m KP children out of school

  • More than 1.8 million children are out of school in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa mainly due to lack of interest, poverty and absence of schools, revealed a survey of the Elementary and Secondary Education Department.
  • The education department had completed the survey in more than one year at a cost of Rs227 million.
  • The survey`s findings, showed that the out-of-school children in the province were 23 per cent of the total population of the children 5-17 years.
  • Of the out-of-school children, 64pc are girls and 36pc boys.
  • Out of the total children, at least 1.152 million (64pc) are reported as `never enrolled` and 0.648 million(36pc) as ‘previously enrolled’ or dropped out. Both incidences of `never enrollment` and `previous enrollment` are substantially higher for girls than boys.
  • Overall, 34pc boys across the province have never gone to school or dropped out against 66pc for girls.

4.  Morocco cuts Iran ties over arms delivery to W. Sahara separatists

  • Morocco has cut diplomatic ties with Iran over its alleged involvement in the delivery of weapons from its Lebanese ally Hezbollah to the Polisario Front on May 1, 2018.
  • A first shipment of weapons was recently` sent to the Algerian-backed Polisario Front, which is seeking independence, via an `element` at the Iranian embassy in Algiers.
  • `Morocco has irrefutable proof, names and specific actions to corroborate the complicity between the Polisario and Hezbollah,`
  • The decision to sever ties with Tehran is `in response to Iran`s involvement, through Hezbollah, in allying itself with the Polisario over the past two years in order to target the security and higher interests of Morocco`.

  • The SDF`s Deir Ezzor Military Council on May 1, 2018 said it would press its efforts to oust IS from remaining areas. `Our forces with the forces of the international coalition have started the last stage` of the anti-IS campaign, it said in a statement.

7.  ICC allows Hafeez to resume bowling

  • Former Pakistan captain Mohammad Hafeez was on May 1, 2018 cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to resume bowling in international matches following remedial work and reassessment.
  • According to an ICC media release, the game`s governing body announced that Hafeez`s bowling action had been found to be legal and the off-spinner could resume bowling at the international level.
  • The bowling action of Hafeez, was reassessed on April 17 at the Lough borough University in England where it was revealed that the amount of elbow extension in his action was within the 15-degree tolerance permitted under the ICC Illegal Bowling Regulations.
  • Hafeez, a regular memberofthe Pakistanone-day side, was first suspended from bowling in December 2014 after being reported for suspect action during a Test series against New Zealand.

8.  Russia, Pakistan to strengthen cooperation

  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Muhammad Asif on May 1, 2018 agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in counterterrorism, economic, trade and other fields.
  • The ministers exchanged messages on May 1 marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Russia-Pakistan diplomatic relations.
  • Both Lavrov and Asif expressed satisfaction about the development of bilateral relations and their two countries’ constructive interaction concerning global affairs within the frameworks of the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, it said.

9.  US delays travel restrictions on Pak diplomats

  • Pakistan Embassy in Washington on May 1, 2018 confirmed that a proposed travel ban on Pakistani diplomats in the United States had been delayed.
  • Neither Pakistan’s Foreign Office or the US State Department has issued a statement on the decision, however the delay signals that both sides are making efforts to settle their differences
  • Last month, the Trump administration communicated to the Pakistani government that its diplomats stationed there could face restrictions in their travel movement if similar limitations on American diplomats in Pakistan were not eased.
  • The ban that was to be implemented from May 1 would now take effect 10 days later.

10.  Iran bans use of popular Telegram messaging app

  • Iran’s judiciary has banned the hugely popular Telegram messaging app, which the authorities have accused of allowing armed opposition groups to fuel unrest.
  • A judge in Tehran gave “the order to interrupt Telegram”. The move comes on the heels of a recent presidential directive banning all government workers from using foreign messenger apps to communicate.
  • Telegram, built by Russian tech guru Pavel Durov, is the most popular social network in Iran with some 40 million users – roughly half the population.
