Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal survives assassination bid, hospitalised

Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a corner meeting in his constituency in Narowal on May 6, 2018.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) retired Capt Arif Nawaz told that they had arrested a suspect, a 22-year-old man, from the spot in the Kanjroor town of the Shakargarh tehsil, who confessed to opening fire on the minister due to the Khatm-i-Nubuwat issue.
The IGP said they were also investigating involvement in the incident of any facilitators.
A couple of months ago, a shoe was hurled at Interior Minister Ahsan at a PML-N workers` convention in Narowal, his hometown.

Muslim nations seek global pressure on Myanmar over Rohingya

Muslim foreign ministers on May 6, 2018 launched a campaign to mobilise international support for action against Myanmar over the Rohingya refugee crisis.
Foreign ministers and diplomats of the 53-member Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) set up a campaign committee during two days of talks in the Bangladesh capital Dhaka.
OIC secretary general Yousef bin Ahmed Al-Othaimeen called the move a key step toward ending a crisis caused by the exodus of about 700,000 Muslim Rohingya from Buddhist-majority Myanmar into camps in Bangladesh.
A military campaign launched in Myanmar`s Rakhine state in August last year set off the massive influx of the Muslim minority into Bangladesh where they joined 300,000 refugees already living in squalid camps following previous violence.
The United Nations and United States have said the crackdown amounted to ethnic cleansing. The Myanmar army has said it only targeted militants.

Federal Areas brush aside KP to retain Pakistan Cup title

Federal Areas yet again displayed excellent team coordination to outgun Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by five wickets in the final while retaining their Pakistan Cup title in Faisalabad on May 6, 2018.
Watched by easily the biggest crowd of the 11-match gala, Federal Areas were always in control as they continued their domination to keep intact unbeaten run by cantering to a fifth straight success after chasing down a modest target of 253.
Federal Areas collected Rs2 million besides the winners` trophy while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received Rs1 million and the runners-up trophy.

Pakistan prepares for UN counter-terror strategy review

Pakistan organised a meeting last week of 15 countries representing all regions of the world ahead of next month’s review of the UN’s Counter Terrorism Strategy that is aimed at updating the document to more effectively combating the terrorist threat by the international community.
According to diplomatic sources, 34 representatives of 15 countries as well as UN Officials exchanged views on the strategy at a working lunch hosted by Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN.
Pakistan had placed itself in a key position by bringing together Russia, China, India, Egypt, Iran as well as other OIC members and Latin American Countries on one platform.

Pakistan, UAE sign $200m pact to finance uplift plans

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan have signed a $200 million cooperation agreement to execute Phase III of the UAE Pakistan Assistance Programme (UAE PAP).
The agreement was signed in implementation of the directives of President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, under the support of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and the follow-up of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, to provide humanitarian aid to Pakistan.
The UAE PAP has been launched with the objective of providing help and humanitarian assistance to the people of Pakistan and support their development initiatives for a better future. Its mission is to execute development aid projects that offer sustainability and continuous benefits to beneficiaries over the long run.
The agreement, which will be funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), was signed in Islamabad by Abdullah Khalifa Al Ghafli, PAP Director, and Commandant MCE, Major General Anwar Ul Haq Chaudhry of the Pakistani Army, in the presence of Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, General Qamar Javed Bajwa and UAE Ambassador to Pakistan Hamad Obeid Al Zaabi.

Saudi Arabia appoints first-ever female commercial attaché

Saudi Arabia has appointed its first-ever female commercial attaché, on May 6, 2018 citing Arab media.
Samar Bint Mazin Saleh has been selected by Majed Bin Abdullah Al-Qasabi, the Saudi minister of commerce and investment, as the Kingdom’s commercial attaché to Tokyo, Japan.
Saleh, who gained the milestone of becoming the first-ever Saudi woman to hold the commercial attaché role, was previously stationed as the trade exchange in-charge at the Saudi Embassy in Italy.
At the Kingdom’s embassy, her work focused on promoting non-oil exports in line with the Saudi Vision 2030. Her latest role also comes as part of the country’s new strategy — led by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman — to empower Saudi women.

Lebanese vote in first general election in nine years

Lebanese voters cast ballots on May 6, 2018 in their first general elections in nine years an event seen as important for economic stability but unlikely to upset the overall balance of power.
The Iranian-backed Hezbollah group and its allies are expected to do well in the election, while Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri`s Future Movement party is expected to struggle to keep all its seats. However, he is seen as likely to be nominated to another term.
But after polling booths closed at 7pm to all voters except those already waiting inside, turnout appeared to have been relatively low.
Lebanon has one of the world`s highest debt-to-GDP ratios and the International Monetary Fund has said its fiscal trajectory is unsustainable.

Tunisia holds first municipal elections

Tunisia held its first free municipal elections on May 6, 2018 as voters expressed frustration at the slow pace of change since the 2011 revolution in the cradle of the Arab Spring.
The election has been touted as another milestone on the road to democracy in the North African country, which has been praised for its transition from decades of dictatorship.
But Tunisia has struggled with persistent political, security and economic problems as well as corruption since the revolution, and observers expected a low turnout for poll.
Only 13.6 per cent of voters had cast their ballots by midday, according to the electoral commission. And despite bars and a clothing brand offering discounts to people with ink-stained fingers proving they had cast ballots, young voters were markedly absent from polling stations in the capital

Prof among 10 killed in IHK

Indian soldiers shot dead five freedom fighters including a university teacher in a gunfight May 6, 2018 that triggered violent protests in which five civilians were killed.
Thousands took to the streets in south Kashmir to show support for the slain freedom fighters. Government forces opened fire to break up the protests, director general of police Shesh Paul Vaid said.
Hundreds of people were injured in the protests, according to doctors.
Government forces swooped on the village of Badigam, in Shopian district south of the capital Srinagar, following a tip-off about armed men holed up inside a house.

Scientists discover rare mineral in lunar meteorite

Mankind’s first home away from Earth may soon be discovered, as new research shows that frozen water may be lurking beneath the moon’s surface – giving new hope that the dusty planet could sustain human life.
Scientists say they’ve discovered traces of a rare mineral, called moganite, in a lunar meteorite that was found 13 years ago in northwest Africa.
Mogamite, which is a crystal similar to quartz, requires the presence of water in order to form, so its discovery is being hailed as new proof that frozen water exists beneath the moon’s surface. It’s already widely known that water exists in the moon’s north and south poles.
But the new discovery gives credence to the belief that there may be frozen water that exists underneath more areas of the moon’s surface.
