  • The treasury passed 12 bills in just 45 minutes during the Punjab Assembly session on Wednesday, clearing the government`s list of legislation before the completion of its tenure on May 31.

  1. Mian Waheed-ud-Din posted as new chief secretary of AJK
  • The federal government has posted Mian Waheed-ud-Din, a BS-21 officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service, as new chief secretary of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
  • The chief secretary position had fallen vacant on May 7 after the promotion of Dr ljaz Munir in BS-22 and subsequent transfer and posting as federal secretary Aviation.
  • Mr Din was serving as secretary forests, wildlife and fisheries in the Punjab before his fresh assignment.
  • He had also served as secretary mines and mineral department in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) until July 14, 2015.
  1. Lahore`s metro train undergoes trial run
  • Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on May 16, 2018 inaugurated and completed a trial run of the Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT) the country`s first rapid mass transit rail project which had been the centre of controversy and a litigation battle led by the civil society of Lahore since the project was first launched in October 2015.
  • The chief minister announced that the train service would be open to the public within the next three-and-a-half months.
  • The OLMT built at a cost of Rs200bn covers a 27.12km-long route, and has 26 stations. It is the only project in the transport /mass transit sector funded by China under the ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) so far. It is being completed as a joint venture of the China Railways (CR) and Norinco, in association with the Lahore Development Authority (LDA).
  1. Nepalese army chief meets Gen Bajwa
  • Chief of Nepalese Army General Rajendra Chhetri called on Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa at GHQ May 16, 2018 and discussed military to military relations and regional security situation.
  • According to ISPR, matters of mutual interest including measures to improve bilateral ties came under discussion during the meeting. It said the visiting dignitary acknowledged and appreciated Pakistan Army’s sincere efforts and sacrifices in the war against terrorism and for stability in the region
  1. Iran agrees to build new refinery for Sri Lanka
  • Iran has agreed to build a new oil refinery for Sri Lanka in addition to upgrading its ageing 50,000 barrel per day (bpd) state-owned refinery.
  • Iranian officials pledged the new refinery when Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena made an official visit to Tehran over the weekend, the first leader to go to Iran since US President Donald Trump reimposed US economic sanctions.
  • Sri Lanka has a single, 50,000 bpd oil refinery in Colombo suburb Sapugaskanda, built by Iran in 1969 to refine Iranian light crude.

  • The Palestinian Authority has recalled its envoys to Romania, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Austria after their ambassadors attended an Israeli reception marking the US embassy`s move to Jerusalem, it said on May 17, 2018.
  • The statement from the PA`s foreign ministry said the EU nations` ambassadors had attended the reception, a day before the US opened its Israel embassy in Jerusalem.
  1. Guatemala opens Israel embassy in Jerusalem after US move
  • Guatemala inaugurated its Israel embassy in Jerusalem on May 16, 2018, becoming the first country to follow in the footsteps of the United States’ deeply controversial move that was accompanied by deadly violence on the Gaza border.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales were among officials who attended a ceremony inaugurating the new embassy at an office park in the disputed city, which is at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
  • The US and Guatemalan moves break with decades of international consensus. US ambassador to Israel David Friedman also attended Wednesday’s ceremony. Previously Guatemala’s embassy was in Herzliya, just north of Tel Aviv like that of Paraguay, so far the only other mission with immediate plans to move to Jerusalem. Paraguay’s embassy is expected to relocate before the end of the month.

  1. SCO Women’s Forum held in Beijing
  • A forum to promote communication among women from Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member countries was held in Beijing on May 16, 2018.
  • The first SCO Women’s Forum, organized by the All-China Women’s Federation, was aimed at increasing exchanges and pushing the development of a community with a shared future for humanity, said Shen Yueyue, president of the federation.
  • Shen called on participants of the forum to remain true to their original aspirations, advocate the “Shanghai Spirit” of the SCO, deepen practical cooperation, uphold openness and inclusiveness, and strive for common development.
  • The 13th meeting of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Security Council Secretaries will be held in Beijing on May 21-22, Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on May 16, 2018.
  1. Two Sherpas break Everest summit records
  • Two Nepali Sherpas broke their own world records for the most Everest summits by a man and a woman May 16, 2018, reaching the world’s highest peak for a 22nd and ninth time respectively.
  • Kami Rita Sherpa, a professional guide, and Lhakpa Sherpa, who works in a supermarket in Connecticut, reached the summit from opposite sides of the 8,848 metre (29,030 feet) mountain.
  • Kami Rita, 48, was one of six sherpas who took seven clients to the summit from the Nepali side, Mingma Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, who organised the expedition.
  • A guide for more than two decades, he broke the previous record of 21 summits that he shared with two other Sherpas.
  • Kami Rita first reached the top of Everest in 1994 when working for a commercial expedition.
  1. Saudi World Cup referee gets life ban over bribery
  • Saudi Arabia has banned referee Fahad Al Mirdasi from football for life for a match-fixing attempt, weeks before he was due to fly to Russia to officiate at the World Cup, the country`s football federation (SAFF) said in a statement.
  • Al Mirdasi had confessed to offering to fix King`s Cup final on behalf of the Al Ittihad club, the SAFF said. It added that it had requested FIFA hand him a lifetime global ban as well as removing him from the World Cup list.
  • The 32-year-old referee made the approach to Al Ittihad chief Hamad Al-Senaie, who immediately handed over the WhatsApp messages to SAFF officials who in turn alerted the relevant government authorities, SAFF said.
