  1. Punjab Assembly concludes tenure
  • The treasury in the Punjab Assembly on May 17, 2018 adopted on the last day of its concluding session the provincial Rs85.40 billion supplementary budget.
  • The praises on the deposed prime minister and his brother Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif were showered in a resolution presented by Law Minister Rana Sanaullah after approval of the additional budget 2017-18.
  • The finance minister justified the supplementary budget, which she said was spent on the welfare of people.
  1. WTO rules in favour of Pakistan, against EU
  • Appellate body, the supreme dispute settlement wing of World Trade Organisation (WTO), has declared European Union (EU) countervailing duties (CVDs) not consistent with its SCM agreement. The EU appealed but was turned down by the appellate body which upheld the initial decision in favour of Pakistan.
  • The decision came at a time when United States wants to kill the appellate body but most of the developed and developing countries, including Pakistan, are lobbying for the continuation of the system to ensure rule based multilateral trading system.
  • This is a great win for the country. The appellate body has handed a definitive victory in a dispute concerning CVDs on May 16.
  • This was only the fifth time that Pakistan has had recourse to the WTO dispute settlement system since 1995, and only the third case in which the country chose to pursue the case all the way to a formal panel ruling.

  1. Pakistan, S Korea to boost defence co-op
  • Pakistan and South Korea on May 17, 2018 discussed matters of shared interest and improving cooperation in the field of defence production.
  • The issues were discussed during a meeting between Ambassador of Republic of Korea Kwak Sung-Kyu and Federal Minister of Defence Production Barrister Usman Ibrahim in Rawalpindi.

  1. US, UAE agree to end airline subsidies
  • The United States and the United Arab Emirates have reached an understanding to end a years-old dispute over alleged Emirati subsidies for their airlines, the White House announced on May 17, 2018.
  • The subsidies give UAE airlines an unfair competitive advantage over others and have been particularly harmful for oil starved nations like Pakistan who cannot provide similar subsidies to their air carriers. The practice has also hurts major American airlines who have been urging the US government since 2015 to use its influence to end the subsidies.
  • `In the newly negotiated understanding, it was recognised that government subsidies undermine healthy and fair competition, said the statement.
  1. Punjab govt promotes, reshuffles 27 officers
  • The Punjab government on May 17, 2018 promoted four officers to grade 21 and transferred 23 others.
  • As per notification, Secretary Excise and Taxation Dr Ahmad Bilal was promoted to grade 21. Member Board of Revenue Babar Shafi was promoted to grade 21. Member Inquiries S&GAD Izhar Ahmad and Livestock Secretary Naseem Sadiq were promoted to grade 21.
  1. Arab League calls for international probe into Israeli `crimes`
  • The Arab League called on May 17, 2018 for an international probe into alleged crimes by Israeli forces against Palestinians following mass protests on the Gaza border that saw dozens of demonstrators killed.
  • Tens of thousands have protested along Gaza`s border with Israel since March 30 calling for Palestinian refugees to be able to return to their homes now inside Israel.
  • The largest demonstrations coincided with the move of the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 14, 2018, which saw Israeli forces kill some 60 Palestinians.

  1. Chinese private firm launches first space rocket
  • A suborbital rocket was launched into space on May 17, 2018 by a start-up in China`s burgeoning commercial aeronautics industry, as private firms snap at the heels of their dominant American rivals.
  • OneSpace, the Beijing-based company behind the launch, is one of dozens of Chinese rivals jostling for a slice of the global space industry, estimated to be worth about $339 billion by Bank of America Merrill Lynch and currently dominated by SpaceX and Blue Origin in the US.
  • Its nine-metre (30-foot) `Chongqing Liangjiang Star` rocket took off from an undisclosed test field in China`s northwest and reached an altitude of 273 kilometres before falling back to Earth, the company said in a statement. The launch aimed to demonstrate an early working model of the company`s OS-X series of rockets, designed to conduct research linked to suborbital flights.
  1. EU takes UK, Germany, four others to court over air pollution
  • The European Commission said on May 17, 2018 it is taking Germany, Britain, France and three other countries to the bloc`s highest court for f ailing to comply with EU air quality standards.
  • The decision by the commission, the 28-nation European Union`s executive arm, hits Britain before it is due to leave the bloc in 2019 following the shock Brexit referendum two years ago.
  • The commission had given the six countries which also includes Italy, Hungary and Romania a last chance in January to take long-sought steps to improve air quality or be hauled before the European Court of Justice.
  1. N Korea refuses to hold talks with South until ties improve
  • North Korea said Thursday it will not hold talks with Seoul under the current diplomatic situation, calling South Korean officials “ignorant and incompetent” a day after the hermit state abruptly cancelled planned inter-Korean discussions.
  • A high-level meeting between the two neighbours had been scheduled, but the North pulled out early that morning over joint military exercises between the US and the South.
  • The two-week “Max Thunder” drills started on May 11 and involve some 100 aircraft from the two allies, including F-22 stealth fighter jets.
  1. Atletico Madrid won the Europa League for the third time
  • Striker Antoine Griezmann punished sloppy Marseille with two expertly-taken goals as Atletico Madrid won the Europa League for the third time with a resounding 3-0 victory in May 16, 2018`s final.
  • Olympique de Marseille were going for a second European trophy, 25 years after winning the Champions League, but had no answer to Griezmann`s mobility and finishing. Captain Gabi capped off the victory with a fine finish in the last minute after being set up by Koke.
