1. ADB approves $75m for Sindh education project

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Monday announced that it has approveda$75 million loan for a project in the education sector of Sindh.
  • In a statement issued here, the Manila-based lending agency said the project was aimed at improving the quality, accessibility, and gender responsiveness of the secondary education system and infrastructure in Sindh.
  • Pakistan has 22.8 million out-of school children, 28 per cent are in Sindh. The province also has the second lowest gross enrolment ratio and net enrolment rates at all education levels in the country.


2. PM orders steps to save children from sexual abuse

  • Expressing shock over children`s rap and pornography scams surfacing in Kasur and Chunian, Prime Minister Imran Khan on October 28, 2019 directed the chief minister and senior officials to engage religious scholars, notables, schoolteachers and parents and offer them proper training and awareness to save children from falling a prey to criminals.
  • The prime minister was presiding over a series of meetings, including the one on law and order at the Chief Minister`s Secretariat.
  • Following a briefing by Punjab Inspector General of Police retired Capt Arif Nawaz, the prime minister stressed that criminals needed to be idendhed by the community well in time.
  • Mr Khan also ordered a strict action against the mafias involved in different crimes. `I will be standing behind the officials who feel pressurised from influential criminals,` he said

3. `Pakistan has highest number of breast cancer patients in Asia`

  • Medical expense on October 28, 2019 claimed that Pakistan has the highest number of breast cancer patients in Asia.
  • Speaking at a seminar at Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University, they said breast cancer claims lives of more than 40,000 women in Pakistan every year.
  • Quoting the data of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University, the experts said approximately 90,000 new cases are diagnosed in Pakistan every year.
  • According to some reports, from 1998 to 2009 there were 10,924 cancer patients in Quetta and 10,000 cases from 2014 to 2017, and most of them were women suffering from breast cancer.

4. Three doctors awarded coveted BS-21

  • Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has awarded Basic Scale 21 to three senior medics of the public sector medical institutions of the province.
  • Those who got promoted to BS-21 also include Prof Mahmood Ayaz, the head of the Special Medical Board constituted for the treatment of three-time prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Prof Ayaz is also principal of the Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), besides being counselor of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan.
  • The two others who got BS-21 include Dean of the Children`s Hospital/the Institute of Child Health Lahore Prof Masood Sadiq and professor of ENT at Allama Iqbal Medical College Lahore Dr Mohammad Rashid Zia. These three doctors have been shortlisted out of 20 senior professors of various disciplines.

5. China warns member countries not to politicise FATF

  • The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) forum should not be politicised by countries to pursue their agenda, said a top Chinese foreign ministry official on October 28, 2019.
  • `China does not want the FATF to be politicised by any single country.
  • There are some countries which want to include Pakistan in the blacklist.
  • They have political designs which China is against,` said Deputy Director General Yao Wen at the Department of Asian Affairs of China`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

6. First woman elected mayor of Colombian capital

  • Claudia Lopez, a symbol of the fight against corruption in Colombia, became the first woman to be elected mayor of Bogota on October 28, 2019.
  • The 49-year-old anti-graft campaigner was competing in the first local elections since a historic peace deal to end an armed insurgency that plagued the country for half a century.
  • Lopez first stepped into the national spotlight after helping to expose links between Colombian lawmakers and rightwing paramilitary groups.
  • She was briefly forced to flee the country after the scandal came to light but returned to be elected senator in 2014 and stood as a vice presidential candidate in last year`s national elections.
  • Lopez won the mayoral poll with just over 35 percent of the vote in a narrow triumph over liberal Carlos Fernando Galan.

7. EU agrees to delay Brexit by three months

  • The European Union on October 28, 2019 agreed a three-month flexible delay to Britain`s exit from the bloc as Prime Minister Boris Johnson pushes for an election after opponents forced him to request an extension he had vowed never to ask for.
  • Just days before the United Kingdom is formally due to leave the EU on Oct 31, Brexit is hanging in the balance, with British politicians no closer to reaching a consensus on how, when or even if the divorce should take place at all.
  • Johnson, who won the top job in July by vowing, `do or die`, to deliver Brexit on Oct 31, was driven to request a postponement after he was defeated in parliament over the sequencing of the ratification of his divorce deal.
  • The 27 countries that will remain in the EU agreed on Monday to put off Brexit until the end of January, with an earlier departure possible should the factionridden UK parliament ratify the separation deal Johnson agreed with the bloc.

8. Godfather producer Robert Evans dies at 89

  • Robert Evans, the protean, fast-living Hollywood producer and former Paramount Pictures production chief who backed such seminal 1970s films as Chinatown, The Godfather and Harold and Maude, died on October 28, 2019. He was 89.
  • His career was a story of comebacks and reinventions. Evans had launched a successful women`s clothing line with his brother, Charles, and was visiting Los Angeles on business when actress Norma Shearer saw him sunbathing by the pool at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
  • She persuaded producers to hire the handsome, dark haired 26-year-old to play her late husband, movie mogul Irving Thalberg, in Man of a Thousand Faces, a film about horror movie star Lon Chaney.
  • After acting roles faded, Evans re-emerged at Paramount and quickly converted the studio from a maker of mediocre films to the biggest hit machine in Hollywood, home to The Godfather and Love Story among others

9. Bismah, Javeria star as Pakistan win T20 series against BD

  • Scintillating half-centuries by captain Bismah Maroof and opener Javeria Khan helped Pakistan take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three match women`s Twenty20 International series against Bangladesh at the Gaddafi Stadium here on October 28, 2019.
  • The hosts, who won the opening fixture by 14 runs on October 26, 2019, completed a 15-run victory in game two, with the final match scheduled at the same venue on Wednesday.
  • Put into bat by Bangladesh captain Salma Khatun at the toss, Pakistan piled up an imposing 167-3 as Bismah struck a quick fire 70 with her 50-ball knock including nine fours and one six. Javeria also excelled by contributing a breezy 52 from 44 deliveries with the aid of five boundaries and two sixes, while adding 95 in 71 deliveries for the second wicket with player-of-the-match Bismah Bangladesh showed spirited resistance in their chase despite losing three wickets at the top for only 25 runs. They did well to reach 152-7 in the end thanks to fine batting from Sanjida Islam (45 off 32 balls, eight fours) and Fargana Hoque (a 19-ball 30, four fours).

10. Federer cruises to `unbelievable` 10th Basel title

  • Roger Federer won his 10th Basel title on October 28, 2019, smothering young Australian Alex De Minaur 6-2, 6-2 to secure what the Swiss legend described as `an unbelievable` success at the home-town tournament where he used to work as a ballboy.
  • The 38-year-old had to control his emotions as he drew a loud and heartfelt standing ovation from his home public during the presentation of his 103rd career trophy. He is now just six short of the record 109 ATP titles won by American Jimmy Connors.
  • Federer`s 10 Basel titles ties the 10 he owns from Halle. He has also won Wimbledon eight times.
