1. IMF links decisive action to programme success

• In a morale boost to the country`s economic managers, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged that the PTI government`s economic programme has made a promising start, and pushed for its `decisive implementation` to usher in stronger and sustainable growth.
• Concluding its five-day visit here on a positive note, an IMF delegation, led by its director for Middle East and Central Asia Jihad Azour, said in a press release that the mission would return to Pakistan in late-October to formally conduct its first quarterly review of $6bn Extended Fund Facility (EFF) for the period ending this month.
• `Pakistan`s economic programme is off to a promising start, but decisive implementation is critical to pave the way for stronger and sustainable growth,` said the mission in a statement warning that `domestic and international risks remain, and structural economic challenges persist`.
• Therefore, the authorities need to press ahead with their reform agenda.


2. US hails Imran`s warning against joining Kashmir fight

• Prime Minister Imran Khan`s latest statement that the militants are enemies of both Pakistan and Kashmiris is being appreciated in Washington too where a senior US official underlined Islamabad`s `sustained commitment` to countering all terrorist groups. This appreciation came from Acting Assistant Secretary Alice G. Wells who looks after South and Central Asian af fairs at the State Department.
• `Applaud PM Imran Khan`s unambiguous and important statement that militants from Pakistan who would carry out violence in Kashmir are enemies of both Kashmiris and Pakistan,` she wrote in a tweet posted.
• Ms Wells also reminded Pakistan that its `sustained commitment to counter all terrorist groups is critical to regional stability`.
• On Wednesday, PM Khan warned citizens against joining the fight in held Kashmir, saying that the Indian authorities were waiting for `any excuse` to crack down on the residents in Kashmir.
• `If someone from Pakistan goes to India and he thinks he will fight in Kashmir … the first person he will be inflicting cruelty on is the Kashmiris.


3. First-ever NFIC set up in Pakistan

• The first ever National Forum of Information Commissioners (NFIC) has been established in Pakistan after federal and all provincial information commissioners gathered here to discuss the challenges being faced by public to get information from government bodies under relevant right to information (RTI) laws.
• The forum consists of all in-service information commissioners from federal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh. With regular meetings and learning from each other, the forum will make a joint effort for a transparent and accountable regime in Pakistan
• The Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI), a not-for-profit civil society organization, laid foundation of the national forum in Islamabad- a move that is being described as a historic achievement in the RTI (right to information) history of the country.


4. UK`s royal couple due in October

• Prince William and Kate Middleton will be visiting Pakistan from Oct 14 to 18, an official statement said on September 20, 2019.
• The Twitter account of Kensington Palace in a statement said that prior to the Pakistan visit the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge would attend a special event at the Aga Khan Centre, London, hosted by Prince Karim Aga Khan on Oct 2, where they would engage with members of the Pakistani community.
• The event in London will be held 12 days ahead of the royal couple`s visit to Pakistan and is being organised by the Aga Khan Centre with the help of thePakistan High Commission.
• The event will showcase modern Pakistani culture and will allow the Duke and Duchess to meet a range of people from Pakistan, including community leaders, those involved in British and Pakistani business, and key figures within the diaspora community including musicians, chefs and artists.

5. Another Pacific nation ditches Taiwan, recognises China

• Taiwan lashed out at China on September 20, 2019 after the tiny island nation of Kiribati switched its recognition to Beijing, the second diplomatic defection in the strategically important Pacific in less than a week.
• The move is another coup for Beijing just weeks before it celebrates the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People`s Republic of China.
• It comes four days after the Solomon Islands made the same decision, and leaves Taiwan more isolated than ever with just 15 states left that recognise it.
• At a hastily arranged press conference, Taiwan`s President Tsai Ingwen said Kiribati`s decision was a `mistake`, adding that the country of just over 100,000 people had `given up a sincere friend and chosen to be China`s chess piece`.
• Taiwan has been a de facto sovereign nation since the end of a civil war in 1949, but China still views the island as its territory and has vowed to seize it, by force if necessary.


6. UN urged to implement Kashmir resolutions

• The United Nations has been asked to implement its resolutions on Kashmir.
• Briefing a visiting Turkish media delegation on September 20, 2019, Director General of the South A sian Strategic Stability Institute University Dr Maria Sultan said Pakistan expected the UN to act and help resolve the decades old issue.
• She said the UN Security Council resolutions of 1948 recognised the Kashmiris` right to determine their destiny through a free and impartial plebiscite.
• On August 5, India illegally revoked Articles 370 and 35A. `With this unlawful action, New Delhi has brought the oldest unresolved dispute to the centre-stage of hostilities between India and Pakistan,` she added.
• `India has buried alive the Kashmiris. They have become stateless in their homes. India has violated all human rights in the held territory,` she said.


7. Colombian cities gather green speed with electric buses

• Buses belching black clouds of smoke in Colombia`s streets could gradually become a thing of the past as two major cities in the South American nation launch fleets of electric buses to curb air pollution and planet-warming carbon emissions.
• Cali, Colombia`s third-largest city, introduced the country`s first fleet of electric buses earlier this month, with 26 now circulating in the south-western city of 2.5 million people.
• Another 110 battery-powered buses are slated to arrive at the end of year, according to Veronica Uribe, head of operations for Metro Cali, the city`s bus system.
• Funded by private bus operators and city hall, the buses can run up to 280km without having to recharge.


8. US sanctions Iran’s central bank

• The United States has imposed sanctions on Iran’s central bank, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on September 20, 2019, nearly a week after attacks on oil facilities in Saudi Arabia that some U.S. officials have pinned on Tehran.
• Trump did not give any other details about the sanctions.
• U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, also speaking to reporters, said the bank was Tehran’s last source of funds. Asked about the possibility of a military response on Iran, Trump said the United States was always prepared and that a military strike was always a possibility.
• Iran has denied any involvement in the Sept. 14 attack, which shook global oil markets and ratcheted up tensions between Washington and Tehran. On Friday, Saudi officials took media to inspect the affected facilities. Saudi Arabia also blames the attacks on Iran.

9. Quetta braces to host maiden first-class match in 11 years

• First-class cricket will return to Quetta today after a gap of 11 years when the second round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy begins on Saturday. Home side Balochistan will take on Southern Punjab in a much-anticipated match, which will start at 10am.
• This will be the first of the four first-class matches the picturesque Bugti Stadium will stage this season. To create opportunities for fans in Quetta to witness top-quality cricket in-person and promote the game in the region, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will open the gates of the Bugti Stadium.
• The event trophy also landed in Quetta on Thursday to provide fans an up-close and personal experience with the prestigious silverware. After the first round, Balochistan have seven points, while Shan Masood-captained Southern Punjab is on 11 Points.


10. Bilal, Haniya clinch Punjab Jr boys, girls titles


• Bilal Asim and Haniya Minhas won the boys U-16 and girls U-14 titles respectively in the Rafum Punjab Junior Tennis Championship 2019, which concluded here at PLTA Courts on September 20, 2019.
• Rafum Group CEO Zahid Hussain graced the concluding day as chief guest while PLTA Secretary Rashid Malik, Senior Vice President Mansoor Warraich, Vice President Afzaal Shareef, tennis players and their families were also present on the occasion to witness the matches.
• In Under-16 boys final, Bilal Asim faced tough resistance from Faizan Fayyaz before winning the final and title 6-3, 4-6, 10-7. In Under-16 doubles final, Abdul Hanan Khan/Hassan Ali beat Faizan Fayyaz/Bilal Asim 5-4, 4-1. In girls Under-14, Haniya Minhas played superbly against Sheeza Sajid and outsmarted her 6-2, 6-1. Haniya was in sublime form and impressed the spectators with her spectacular game and skills. She won the first set conceding just 2 points while she conceded just 1 point in the second set to win the final and title in straight sets.
• In boys Under-14 final, Bilal Asim outlasted Shaeel Durab 4-0, 4-2 to double his crowns. In Under-12 doubles final, Asad/Ahtesham Humayun outclassed Zohaib Afzal Mailk/Haniya Minhas 4-0, 4-1. In Under-12 category, Asad Zaman thumped Ehtasm Humayun 8-3 to lift the title. In Under-10 final, Ameer Muhammad Mazari routed Ismael Aftab 8-2 to claim the title.
