6. PM orders launch of Peshawar Mor metro bus service tomorrow

• Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, while ordering an inquiry into the inordinate delay in the launch of metro bus service from Peshawar Mor to Islamabad International Airport (IIA), directed the civic agency on Thursday to start the service from Saturday.
• The prime minister visited the metro bus track early on Thursday. He got a briefing from Capital Development Authority (CDA) Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed about the project and directed that the bus service should be launched from Saturday and it should be free for commuters in Ramazan.
• The prime minister also directed for carrying out a feasibility study on operating metro buses on the Bhara Kahu-Peshawar Mor and Rawat routes


7. Ukraine conflict to fuel inflationary pressures: UN

• Inflationary pressures in Pakistan will remain strong if the conflict in Ukraine continues, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) said in its annual Economic and Social Survey for 2022.
• Pakistan is a net importer of oil and natural gas as well as Ukrainian wheat. Both these factors will mean inflationary pressures will remain strong, the UNESCAP survey noted.
• The survey released on Wednesday, projected that the economic growth of Pakistan is expected to be a moderate to 4.5 per cent in fiscal year 2022 with tightening and fiscal consolidation along with the reactivation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) stabilisation programme is set to lower domestic demand and business and consumer confidence.


8. Dutch court jails 1980s Afghan prison chief for 12 years

• A Dutch court on April 14, 2022 sentenced an elderly Afghan man to 12 years in prison for war crimes committed while in charge of a notorious Kabul jail in the 1980s.
• The sentencing in The Hague is one of the latest in a series of efforts by Europeans to bring people to account for crimes in conflict-torn nations, including Syria and Afghanistan as eyes turn to Ukraine.
• Abdul Razzaq Rafief `treated the prisoners cruelly and dishonourably and arbitrarily deprived them of their liberty,` judge Els Kole told The Hague regional court, adding `these are war crimes` Rafief, 76, played a leading role in the abuse of prisoners at the Pul-eCharkhi jail between 1983-88 `where he had effective command and control`, the judge said


9. Russian warship attacked in Black Sea; Moscow accuses Kyiv of border strikes

• Ukraine claimed on April 15, 2022 to have hit Russia`s flagship in the Black Sea with missiles, igniting a fire that Moscow said `seriously damaged` the warship as it accused Kyiv of helicopter strikes elsewhere over its territory.
• Even as Ukraine pushed to restart civilian evacuations ahead of a feared major offensive in the east, Russia claimed its own citizens were being targeted, accusing Ukraine of injuring civilians in helicopter strikes on residential buildings in its western Br yansk region.
• Kyiv forcefully denied the accusation, saying Russia was staging `terror attacks` on its own soil to spur `anti-Ukrainian hysteria`


10. Elon Musk launches hostile takeover bid for Twitter

• Tesla chief Elon Musk has launched a hostile takeover bid for Twitter, insisting it was a `best and final offer` and that he was the only person capable of unlocking the full potential of the platform.
• The move throws another curve into a roller-coaster ride for Musk`s volatile relationship with the global social media service, and raises many questions about what comes next.
