1. Doha declares intent to invest $3bn in Pakistan

• The state owned investment fund of Qatar is going to invest $3 billion in Pakistan, an official statement from the office of the energy-rich country`s ruler said on August 24, 2022.
• The Emiri Diwan, the administrative office of the emir, released the statement as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held official talks with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Doha following a meeting with the sovereign fund officials a day ago.
• The $450bn Qatar Investment Authority announced its `aspiration to invest $3bn in various commercial and investment sectors in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan`, it said

2. `Dry port` complex project in Mirpur inaugurated

• Azad Jammu and Kashmir President Barrister Sultan Mahmood and Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas on August 24, 2022 jointly performed the groundbreaking of the long awaited `dry port complex` in Mirpur.
• The dry port in the lakeside city, which is not only home to hundreds of thousands of UK based expatriates but also an industrial hub of the liberated territory, had been the demand of local and non-local importers, industrialists and traders for the past three decades and on a number of occasions in the past the federal government had shown willingness for its establishment.
• However, efforts in this regard picked up momentum after Mr Ilyas took over as AJK premier some four months ago mainly because of his experience and expertise in business, investment and trade related affairs

3. Thailand approves first instant noodle price rise in 14 years

• Thailand will raise the price of Thai instant noodles, the trade department said on August 24, 2022, marking the first price increase on the must-have daily staple in 14 years.
• The kingdom`s economy has not bounced back after fully re-opening to tourists earlier this year, and has been battered by 14-yearhigh inflation and the economic knock-on effects of the Russian-Ukraine war.
• Prices of instant noodles are capped by Bangkok at six baht ($0.16) per packet but anxious major producers had urged the government to raise the limit to eight baht, citing spiralling costs. The internal trade department confirmed that it would approve an increase to seven baht per regular-sized packet, effective from August 25

4. Iran tests drones amid US concern of possible supply to Russia

• Iran on August 24, 2022 launched exercises to test its combat and reconnaissance drones, state media reported, amid US concerns over the possible supply of Iranian-made unmanned aircraft to Russia for use in the war in Ukraine.
• The two-day war-games will involve 150 drones and will cover Iran`s Gulf coast and most of its territory, state television reported. The country`s air-defences and `electronic warfare` capabilities will also be tested against mock enemy drones.
• Iran and the regional forces it backs have increasingly relied in recent years on drones in Yemen, Syria, Iraq and the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Gulf

5. US threatens Turkiye with sanctions over Russia ties

• Turkiye confronted growing US pressure on August 24, 2022 to break off its growing ties with Russia or face potentially crippling sanctions linked to the Kremlin`s invasion of Ukraine.
• Washington is becoming increasingly alarmed that the Russian government and businesses are using Turkiye to evade Western financial and trade restrictions imposed in response to the six-month-old war, as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin agreed to step up economic cooperation at a summit in the Black Sea resort of Sochi earlier this month.

6. Biden orders strikes against `Iran-backed militias` in Syria

• President Joe Biden on August 24, 2022 ordered air strikes in eastern Syria targeting `facilities used by Iranian-backed militias`, a US military spokesman said.
• The strikes in oil-rich Deir Ezzor province `targeted infrastructure facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran`s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps`, Central Command (Centcom) spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino claimed in a statement.
• Buccino said the `precision strikes are intended to defend and protect US forces from attacks like the ones on August 15 against US personnel by Iran backed groups`, when a number of drones targeted an outpost of US-led anti jihadist forces without causing any casualties.

7. US announces $3bn in military aid for Ukraine

• President Joe Biden announced nearly $3 billion in military aid the biggest US package so far on Kyiv`s Independence Day, as officials warned that Russia appeared to be planning to launch fresh attacks in coming days on Ukraine`s civilian infrastructure and government facilities.
• `The United States of America is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine as they continue the fight to defend their sovereignty,` Biden said in a statement while announcing the package on Wednesday.
• The new package uses funds from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) appropriated by Congress to allow the Biden administration to procure weapons from industry rather than taking weapons from existing US weapons stocks

8. Japan signals return to nuclear power

• Japan will restart more idled nuclear plants and look at developing next-generation reactors, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on August 24, 2022, setting the stage for a major policy shift on nuclear energy a decade after the Fukushima disaster.
• The comments from Kishida who also said the government would look at extending the lifespan of existing reactors highlight how the Ukraine crisis and soaring energy costs have forced both a change in public opinion and a policy rethink toward nuclear power.
• Japan has kept most of its nuclear plants idled in the decade since a massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant

9. Teen becomes youngest person to fly solo around the world

• A British-Belgian teenager became the youngest person to fly solo around the world on August 24, 2022 after a five-month journey that saw him battle monsoon rains, searing heat and bureaucracy.
• Cheers went up as 17-year-old Mack Rutherford landed at an airfield near the Bulgarian capital Sofia after flying 54,124 km and visiting more than 30 countries since he departed from the same site in his Shark Aero microlight airplane on March 23.
• `There were many points in my journey where it would have been easy to give up…But I kept going, even when it seemed like I wouldn`t be able to make it to the end,` he said. His journey broke two Guinness World records, including one set by his sister Zara, 19, who handed him one of the certificates on the tarmac

10. Court suspends Thai PM from office

• Thailand`s Constitutional Court on August 24, 2022 suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha from office while it considers a legal challenge that could see him thrown out months before an expected general election.
• The court agreed unanimously to hear a case brought by opposition parties that argue Prayut has reached the end of his eight-year term limit as premier.
• Judges also agreed by five votes to four to suspend Prayut from office until the case is decided, the court stated
