1. Exports jump 7.67pc to $2.161bn

• Pakistan`s exports grew for the third consecutive month in November to $2.161 billion, up 7.67 per cent from $2.007bn in the corresponding month last year, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed on December 4, 2020.
• The increase in exports is mainly driven by double-digit growth in proceeds from textile and non-textile commodities.
• Meanwhile, during the month under review, imports also increased 7pc leading to a slight increase in trade deficit


2. PIA, Askari Bank launch co-brand credit card

• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Askari Bank Limited have launched Co-Brand Credit Card through which both organisations will offer their services for the benefit of a large number of customers in Pakistan.
• Askari Bank and the PIA, being two market leaders in their respective industries, have long been associated with Pakistan`s national identity and it was only natural that they would join forces to create a unique value for their consumers


3. UK aviation firm acquires stakes in Pakistan

• A UK-based global aviation services specialist Menzies Aviation on December 4, 2020 announced the acquisition of a 51 per cent shareholding in Royal Airport Services (RAS).
• An aviation services business based in Pakistan, RAS has been operating in the country since 2007 and has a strong position in local markets, a press release said. It has been providing a range of aviation services including ground and cargo handling, airline ticketing and cargo sales across Pakistan. RAS handles both domestic and international carriers across eight airports, with revenue in excess of $20 million in 2019, the press release added


4. Fakhar Zaman wins award

• World Punjabi Congress Chairman Fakhar Zaman has been conferred the Punjabi Sahit Ratan Award by the Indian Punjab government for his work for development of the Punjabi language and culture.
• This is the second international highest award which Mr Zaman has received from the Indian Punjab after the Shiromani Sahtik Award, which he received a few years back


5. Ex-Judge Arshad Malik dies of coronavirus

• Former accountability court judge Arshad Malik passed away on December 4, 2020 due to the novel coronavirus.
• Arshad Malik had developed coronavirus symptoms and eventually tested positive.
• The accountability judge, who announced the verdict against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Al Azizia Steel Mills reference, was dismissed from service over misconduct on July 3.


6. France threatens veto as `difficult` Brexit talks drag on

• European doubts over a post-Brexit trade deal with Britain boiled over on December 4, 2020 with France threatening a veto as tricky negotiations entered what could be their final hours.
• As night fell in London, EU and UK negotiators Michel Barnier and David Frost were locked in last-minute debates over fishing rights, fair trade rules and an enforcement mechanism to govern any deal


7. Jordan, Israel in rare meeting on Palestinian issue

• Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi has held a rare meeting with his Israeli counterpart to press for the restart of stalled negotiations between the Palestinians and the Jewish state.
• Thursday’s meeting came days after Palestinian Authority leader Mahmud Abbas visited Jordan as part of an Arab tour to raise support for the Palestinians after Joe Biden won last month’s US presidential election.


8. China turns on nuclear-powered ‘artificial sun’

• China successfully powered up its “artificial sun” nuclear fusion reactor for the first time, state media reported December 4, 2020, marking a great advance in the country’s nuclear power research capabilities.
• The HL-2M Tokamak reactor is China’s largest and most advanced nuclear fusion experimental research device, and scientists hope that the device can potentially unlock a powerful clean energy source. It uses a powerful magnetic field to fuse hot plasma and can reach temperatures of over 150 million degrees Celsius, according to the People’s Daily — approximately ten times hotter than the core of the sun


9. West Indies win Spirit of Cricket award

• West Indies have won this year`s Spirit of Cricket award after sending both their men`s and women`s teams to tour England during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has announced.
• The men`s side arrived in England in June for a three-Test series played in a bio-secure environment, which saw international cricket resume for the first time since the novel coronavirus outbreak brought the global calendar to a halt.


10. Nepali pair lifts ITF J5 Juniors Tennis C’ships doubles title

• Unseeded Nepali pair of Aarav Samrat Hada and Aki Zuben Rawat lifted the boys’ doubles title in the ITF J5 Juniors Tennis Championships after beating top seed pair of Muhammad Shoaib and Ahmed Kamil of Pakistan in a three-set final played at PTF SDA Tennis Complex on December 4, 2020.
• Shoaib and Ahmed were off to flying start in the final, winning the first set 6-3 by breaking first game of the Nepali pair, who later made a tremendous comeback and took the second set 6-2 and the third and decisive one by 10-8 to claim their maiden ITF title
