1. IS claim of attack on embassy being verified: FO

• With the Foreign Office saying it was verifying reports about the militant Islamic State group`s claim that it had carried out attack on the Pakistan Embassy in Kabul, an official US report to Congress doubts the Afghan Taliban`s ability to counter IS. `Independently and in consultation with the Afghan authorities, we are verifying the veracity of these reports,` the FO spokesperson said in a statement on Sunday, adding the attack was a reminder of the risk militant activity posed to the region.
• `We must act resolutely with all our collective might to defeat this menace. On its part, Pakistan remains steadfast in its commitment to combat terrorism,` the FO official said.
• Islamic State-Khorasan Province, which claimed the attack, is affiliated with the Islamic State in the Middle East.IS claimed the attack was carried out by two of its members armed with `medium and sniper weapons` and was targeting the ambassador and his guards who were present in the courtyard of the embassy, according to Reuters.

2. Pakistan to be polio-free by end of 2023: UNICEF

• The United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) has said the polio programme in Pakistan is back on track and expressed the hope that the crippling disease will be eradicated from the country by the end of 2023 following effective measures to control its spread.
• UNICEF`s Regional Director for South Asia George Laryea Adjei said in an exclusive interview with APP that the current data suggested that the virus was now under control in the country.
• Appreciating efforts of over 350,000 health workers, he said the programme is back on track to stop the wild poliovirus transmission in 2023

3. OPEC+ keeps output unchanged before fresh Russia curbs

• Major oil-producing countries, led by Saudi Arabia and Russia, agreed on December 4, 2022 to maintain their current output levels in a climate of uncertainty and ahead of fresh sanctions against Moscow coming into force on December 5, 2022 (today).
• The representatives of the 13 members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) led by Riyadh, and their 10 allies headed by Moscow, decided to stick to their course agreed in October of a production cut of two million barrels per day until the end of next year.
• OPEC+ described its October decision to cut as one `which was purely driven by market considerations`, adding that it had been `the necessary and the right course of action towards stabilising global oil markets`, a statement said.
• The next OPEC+ ministerial meeting is scheduled for June 4

4. Israel strikes at Hamas after rocket fired from Gaza

• The Israeli air force said it had carried out overnight air strikes against sites of the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip after a rocket was fired from the Palestinian enclave towards Israeli territory.
• The Israeli army reported on Saturday evening a rocket had been fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, the first in a month.
• The attack came as one of Gaza`s larger armed factions, Islamic Jihad, threatened to retaliate after Israeli troops killed two of its leaders in the West Bank town of Jenin on Thursday


5. Herzog lands in Bahrain on `peace mission`

• Israeli President Isaac Herzog visited Bahrain on Sunday on the first trip by an Israeli head of state to the Gulf kingdom, following the normalisation of relations in 2020.
• Herzog, whose role is largely ceremonial, met King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa and Crown Prince Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa. They discussed issues including regional security and `ways to encourage communication between the representatives of the private sector in the two countries`, the official Bahrain News Agency (BNA) said.
• Herzog said on Sunday he would follow his stop in Bahrain with a visit to the UA E capital Abu Dhabi

6. Iran executes four convicted of spying for Israel

• Iran on December 4, 2022 executed four people convicted of cooperating with Israel`s spy agency Mossad, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

• `When you start asking very specific questions, Chat GPT`s response can be off the mark,` but its overall performance remains `really impressive, with a `high linguistic level,` he said.


8. Chinese astronauts return from space station

• Three Chinese astronauts safely returned to Earth on December 4, 2022 after six months aboard the Tiangong space station, state media quoted the country`s space agency.
• The team touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in Inner Mongolia at 8:09pm Beijing time, Xinhua news agency said, citing the China Manned Space Agency. said they were in good health, the report said.
• The three Shenzhou-14 astronauts mission commander Chen Dong, China`s first woman astronaut Liu Yang and teammate Cai Xuzhe had been tasked with overseeing the final stages of construction of the space station
