1. `Calamitous` smog puts Punjab on high alert

• As Punjab imposed an environmental emergency in parts of the province, particularly in Lahore, owing to the hazardous level of smog, the Lahore High Court (LHC) asked the government on Tuesday to notify the closure of schools in the provincial capital for at least three days a week.
• Terming smog a `calamity` Chief Minister Parvez Elahi ordered the effective implementation of a plan designed to reduce smog in the province and said that action should be taken to control the factors that caused it.
• The Environment Protection Department (EPD), transport, and industries departments in liaison with administrative officers should go in the field, the CM said, adding that any failure to implement the ongoing SOPs to reduce smog will not be tolerated. He said that `indiscriminate action` should be taken against those who set fire to crop residues a practice banned across the province


2. FIR of Arshad`s killing registered on SC order

• Police sprang into action on December 5, 2022, registering an FIR on Arshad Sharif`s murder on the directions of the Supreme Court nearly six weeks after the journalist`s assassination.
• The victim`s hosts in Kenya, Khuram Ahmed and Waqar Ahmed, along with some unidentified persons, were booked by the Ramna police for his murder on the complaint of SHO Rasheed Ahmed, just hours after the top court invoked its suo-motu jurisdiction on an application filed by the journalist`s mother and directed the interior secretary to ensure the registration of an FIR. The court also sought a fact-finding report from the additional attorney general for Pakistan.
• The five-member SC bench, which will resume hearing the case on December 7, 2022 (today), came down hard on the government on Tuesday for not submitting the f act-finding report or registering an FIR of the incident


3. Abdullah Sumbal posted CS for three months

• The federal government finally notified on Tuesday Abdullah Khan Sumbal as Punjab Chief Secretary for three months, ending the embarrassing cycle of extensions being given to the officer to hold a `look-after` charge of the highest administrative office in the province.
• Mr Sumbal had been given four extensions since Sept 17, when he was told to `look after` the office of the Punjab chief secretary after his predecessor, Kamran Ali Afzal, filed a `protest leave`, resenting `postings and transfers of senior civil servants without merit,` which he tried to resist.
• On the other hand, the federal government also granted 130-day ex-Pakistan leave to Mr Afzal, who wanted to travel to Australia

4. Foreign firm to invest in energy from garbage project

• A Norwegian corporation intends to invest $300 million initially for approximately 45 megawatts of power generation using solid waste in Lahore, following German and Thai businesses.
• The plan calls for the Norwegian company to use up to 2,000 tonnes of new garbage for energy production.
• After holding a meeting with a Norwegian company delegation here on Tuesday, Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Board of Directors Chairman Aatif Chaudhry told Dawn that the city produces about 6,000 tonnes of waste per day, which our company collects and dumps at the Lakhudair landfill site (Mahmood Booti)


5. Floodwaters still inundate 13 districts of Sindh, Balochistan: UN

• As the United Nations Satellite Centre`s imagery indicates an estimated eight million people still potentially exposed to floodwaters or living close to flooded areas, the latest UN report released on December 6, 2022 said floodwaters still present in 11 districts of Sindh and two districts of Balochistan.
• The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance`s report said floodwaters continued to recede in many flood-affected areas of the country, but standing floodwaters continue to be present in Dadu, Kambar-Shahdadkot, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Sanghar, Umerkot, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad and Naushahro Feroze districts in Sindh, and Sohbatpur and Jafferabad districts in Balochistan.
• The report says the noods have had a significant impact on health, particularly for children. Poor sanitation and contaminated water resources are adversely affecting the health and wellbeing of children as cases of diarrhea and other waterborne diseases are still prevalent

6. NADRA receives certification for `robust` data security

• The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has secured an `ISO 27001` certification for its `robust cyber resilience and effective measures to secure data,` a press release by the authority has said.
• ISO 27001 is an internationally recognised standard for information security management systems.
• It is awarded to organisations with resilient and effective systems in place to secure critical data such as financial information, intellectual property and employee data.
• Nadra is now an ISO:27001 certified entity in ID card printing, networks and communications, infrastructure and information security departments, according to the press release. The authority has recently received the certification in recognition of its `exceptional commitment` to protecting and safeguarding information assets, the press release added


7. ECNEC okays Rs333.6bn for flood-hit projects

• The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on December 6, 2022 approved about Rs333.6 billion worth of 10 development projects for flood-related recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction across the country.
• Most projects, worth Rs233bn of the total, related to Sindh, which took the brunt of the flood-related damage.
• The ECNEC meeting, presided over by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, was attended by federal ministers for planning, communications and commerce, prime minister`s special assistants on finance and revenue, provincial finance ministers of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Senator Nisar Ahmed Khuhro on behalf of Sindh government.
• The meeting approved the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the National Highway 5 (N-5) from Moro to Ranipur (around 90 kilometres) and 32 damaged bridges at a total cost of Rs36.2bn $164.6 million under the Asian Development Bank`s (ADB) flood emergency loan to the extent of 90pc project cost and 10pc Pakistan government`s share.

8. UNICEF seeks $10bn to help 110m children in 155 states

• The United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) has launched a $10.3 billion emergency funding appeal to reach more than 173 million people, including 110 million children, affected by Covid19 pandemic worldwide and the growing threat of climate-impacted severe weather events.
• Funds will support essential programmes for over 110 million children across 155 countries and territories through 2023, according to a UNICEF press statement released on December 6, 2022.
• Around the world, a resurgence of disease outbreaks, including cholera and measles, bring an additional danger to children in emergencies, said the statement

9. Indonesia bans sex outside marriage in criminal code

• Indonesia`s parliament approved a new criminal code on December 6, 2022 that bans sex outside marriage with a punishment of up to one year in jail, despite worries the laws may scare away tourists from its tropic al shores and harm investment.
• The new code, which will apply to Indonesians and foreigners alike, also prohibit cohabitation between unmarried couples. It will also ban insulting the president or state institutions, spreading views counter to the state ideology, and staging protests without notification. The laws were passed with support from all political parties.
• However, the code will not come into effect for three years to allow for implementing regulations to be drafted. Currently, Indonesia bans adultery but not premarital sex

10. Google launches anti-misinformation campaign in India

• Google`s Jigsaw subsidiary is launching a new anti-misinformation project in India, aimed at preventing misleading information that has been blamed for inciting violence, a top executive said.
• The initiative will use `pre bunking` videos designed to counter false claims before they become widespread circulated on the company`s YouTube platform and other social media sites.
• Google`s efforts to challenge the spread of misinformation mark a contrast with rival Twitter which is cutting its trust and safety teams, despite new owner Elon Musk saying it will not become a `free-for-all hell scape`
