1. Punjab gets four-day work week

• The Punjab government on December 7, 2022 told the Lahore High Court that all public and private schools in the provincial capital will remain closed on every Friday and Saturday, in addition to the weekly holiday on Sunday, until further orders due to the worsening smog situation.
• A provincial lawo fficer also presented a notification issued by the school education secretary to this effect before Justice Shahid Karim, who had asked the government to notify the closure of schools in Lahore for at least three days a week.
• The law officer also presented another notification by the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) regarding the closure of all private offices in Lahore for two days in a week Friday and Saturday till Jan 15, 2023. However, the staff may work from home


2. `Pakistan to be 6th top economy by 2075`

• A research paper published by international investment bank Goldman Sachs said Pakistan may well be the sixth largest economy in the world by 2075 given `appropriate policies and institutions` are in place.
• Written by economists Kevin Daly and Tadas Gedminas and titled `The Path to 2075,` the paper projects that the five largest economies by 2075 will be China, India, United States, Indonesia and Nigeria.
• Goldman Sachs has been projecting long-term growth of countries for almost two decades. It has expanded these projections to cover 70 emerging and developed economies for the last 10 years.
• The latest paper covers 104 countries with projections going as f ar as 2075


3. US to tighten noose around TTP, IS-K: State Dept

• The United States has pledged to further tighten the noose around militant groups such as the Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K) and the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as the two terrorist outfits step up their activities in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
• `We have seen the reports that IS-Khas claimed responsibility for the attack,` a US State Department spokesperson told Dawn on Wednesday, days after militants targeted Pakistan`s Chargé d`Affaires Ubaid Nizamani in Kabul and severely injured an embassy guard, who shielded the diplomat.
• `We remain committed to further degrading Al Qaeda, IS-K, TTP, and other terrorist groups that pose a threat to the US and our partners and allies, the spokesperson added

4. First school for transgenders inaugurated

• The Punjab School Education Department (SED) on December 7, 2022 inaugurated first transgender school in the provincial capital to educate and teach skills to transpersons.
• Punjab Minister for School Education Murad Raas cut the ribbon to inaugurate the school in New Garden Town near Barkat Market. A number of civil society activists, educationists, transgender persons and others were present on the occasion.
• During the last year, the department had already established three transgender schools in Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan. These institutes were providing free education from primary to higher secondary classes along with training of three skills, including stitching and sewing, cooking and beauty make-up


5. US donates $7.5m oxygen supplies to Pakistan

• The US government on December 7, 2022 donated $7.5 million worth of medical oxygen supplies to the health ministry to continue its fight against Covid-19 and train 163 hospitals staff throughout Pakistan to increase their capability to treat patients suffering from lung diseases.
• The amount was handed over to the Federal Minister of Health Abdul Qadir Patel through the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
• In his remarks, Mr Patel said: “We are thankful to the US government for their continued support during Covid-19 and especially during the recent floods.”
• He said these efforts reflected the strong bilateral relations between the two countries

6. Japan to give $38.9m grant for flood-hit

• The Japanese government has announced its plan to provide $38.9 million in grant to Pakistan as part of its supplementary budget to deliver life-saving aid to flood victims.
• Japan had earlier provided $7m as an emergency grant to address the immediate impact of the floods in September.
• The Japanese government stands ready to support the people of Pakistan to overcome the ongoing humanitarian crisis, as part of the long-standing partnership with Islamabad, the embassy announced on December 7, 2022

7. Xi arrives in Saudi Arabia as Riyadh chafes at US censure

• Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Saudi Arabia on December 7, 2022 on a visit Beijing hailed as its biggest diplomatic initiative in the Arab world, as Riyadh expands global alliances beyond a longstanding partnership with the West.
• The meeting between the global economic powerhouse and Gulf energy giant comes as Saudi ties with Washington are strained by US criticism of Riyadh`s human rights record and Saudi support for oil output curbs before the November midterm polls.
• The White House said Xi`s visit was an example of Chinese attempts to exert influence and that this would not change US policy towards the Middle East. `We are mindful ofthe influence that China is trying to grow around the world,` White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said


8. Time magazine names Zelensky `Person of the Year`

• Time magazine named President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as `the spirit of Ukraine` as its 2022 person of the year on December 7, 2022, for the resistance the country has shown in the face of Russia`s invasion.
• Calling Zelensky`s decision to remain in Kyiv and rally his country `fateful,` Time editor in chief Edward Felsenthal said this year`s decision was `the most clear-cut in memory.
• Since Russia`s Feb 24 invasion, Zelensky has delivered daily speeches that are followed not only by Ukrainians but by citizens and governments around the globe

9. Taliban carry out first public execution since takeover

• An Afghan man convicted of murder was executed in public on December 7, 2022, the Taliban said, the first confirmation of such a sentence since the hardline Islamists returned to power.
• Last month Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada ordered judges to fully enforce aspects of Islamic law that include public executions, stonings and floggings, and the amputation of limbs from thieves.
• They have carried out several public floggings since then, but Wednesday`s execution in Farah capital of the western province of the same name is the first the Taliban have acknowledged


10. Support for Scottish independence climbs to 56pc

• Support for Scottish independence has risen to 56 per cent, according to an Ipsos poll released on December 7, 2022, two weeks after the United Kingdom`s top court stopped an attempt by Scotland`s government to hold another independence referendum next year.
• The poll of 1,065 people aged over 16 across Scotland found support for independence had risen by 6 percentage points since the last survey in May. Only 44pc backed staying in the union once undecided voters were stripped out.
• The results showed the Scottish National Party (SNP) led by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon would win more than half the votes at the next election expected in 2024. She has vowed to fight the contest solely on whether Scotland should be independent, making it a `de facto` referendum
