1. Army put on high alert amid threat of Indian strike

• Amidst a possible threat of another attempt by India to conduct a surgical strike inside Pakistan`s territory, Pakistan Army has been put on high alert.
• They said that after facing humiliating defeat in Ladakh and Dokalam, India was preparing to launch another attack on the Line of Control (LoC) and across the Working Boundary at Pulwama, posing a threat to the regional peace and stability


2. Pakistan-China joint air exercise begins

• Pakistan-China joint air exercise Shaheen-IX commenced at an operational airbase of Pakistan Air Force on December 9, 2020.
• Shaheen-IX is the ninth in the series of joint air exercises which is conducted each year in both countries on alternate turns.
• A contingent of People`s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) comprising combat pilots, air defence controllers and technical ground crew is participating in the exercise


3. Mobile phone imports jump 90pc

• The legal mobile phone imports increased by more than 90 per cent since the implementation of Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (Dirbs) in 2018.
• The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced that the import of mobile devices via legal channels increased to 28.02 million sets in 2019 from 17.2m in 2018, while thus far in the ongoing calendar year 2020 more than 32.8m devices have been imported.


4. Pakistan gets US presidential waiver to avoid sanctions

• US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo has issued a presidential waiver for Pakistan, exempting it from the sanctions that follow a country`s designation as a violator of religious freedom.
• Secretary Pompeo had designated Pakistan and nine others as Countries of Particular Concern (CPC) for alleged continued violations of religious freedom during 2019-20


5. WB approves $200m for Sindh resilience project, $100m for Karachi waste management

• The World Bank has approved $300 million loan for two projects in Sindh the Sindh Resilience Project to build resilience to natural hazards and the Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project to strengthen solid waste management in Karachi to tackle recurrent urban Hooding and public health emergencies.
• The World Bank resident mission in Islamabad announced on December 9, 2020 that the approval of $200m by the executive board as additional financing for Sindh Resilience project will strengthen linkages between disaster risk management and the health sector by establishing the Sindh Emergency Service to strengthen capacity for disaster preparedness and emergency response, including health crises such as Covid-19.


6. French cabinet okays law to fight `radical Islamism`

• French President Emmanuel Macron obtained his cabinet`s approval on December 9, 2020 for draft legislation combating `radical Islamism` after a spate of attacks, which critics fear risks targeting all Muslims. The draft will now be submitted to parliament.
• Macron argued the legislation was needed to shore up France`s staunchly secular system, but the plan has further stirred up social tensions over the consequences for Europe`s largest Muslim community


7. Canada approves vaccine

• Canada approved the Covid-19 vaccine from Pfizer Inc and BioNTech on December 9, 2020, clearing the way for shots to be delivered and administered across the country.
• The nation`s first coronavirus vaccine green light comes under a new interim order system that allows for accelerated approval.
• `The approval of the vaccine is supported by evidence that it is safe, effective and of good quality, the health ministry said in a statement


8. Pandemic putting democracy under threat, says study

• More than six in 10 countries around the world have adopted measures during the Covid-19 pandemic that threaten democracy or human rights, a report by democracy institute International IDEA said on December 9, 2020.
• The study, which examined the situation in almost all countries of the world, concluded that 60 percent of nations `implemented restrictions that were either illegal, disproportionate, indefinite or unnecessary` in at least one area of democratic freedoms


9. UK issues allergy warning over Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine

• British health officials on December 9, 2020 warned that anyone with a history of significant allergic reactions should not have the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid jab for the time being.
• The warning came after two members of the state-run National Health Service who were among the first to receive the vaccine on Tuesday suffered allergic reactions and needed treatment


10. South Africa to tour Pakistan after 13 years to play two Tests, three T20s

• The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), on December 9, 2020, finally announced the itinerary of South Africa`s tour to Pakistan, which will commence from Jan 16 and include two Test matches and a three-match T20 International series.
• Ranked among the top sides in world cricket, South Africa will be touring Pakistan after a gap of 13 years. The tour holds tremendous significance since the leading teams in world cricket including as England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and others had refused to tour Pakistan due to security reasons following the ghastly terror attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore in 2009
