1. US reiterates support for flood recovery efforts

• The United States has reiterated its commitment to working with Pakistan to support flood recovery efforts in the country.
• US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asia Elizabeth Horst concluded her two-day visit to Islamabad on December 09, 2022, during which she discussed the US support for Pakistan`s flood recovery with government leaders.
• A press release, issued by the US Embassy, said her discussions underscored the US government`s commitment to working with Pakistan to improve access to renewable energy, respond to climate change and address challenges that stand in the way of expanding trade and investment between the two countries


2. UK sanctions controversial Sindh cleric

• A controversial pir from Sindh was placed on the British government`s sanctions list on December 09, 2022, making Pakistan one of 11 countries where rights violators will be punished.
• In a comment to Dawn, the British High Commission said: `The UK takes freedom of religion or belief very seriously and is committed to protecting minorities around the world. The new package of sanctions targets those violating fundamental freedoms. This includes Mian Abdul Haq, a cleric of the Bharchundi Sharif shrine in Ghotki, Sindh, who is responsible for forced marriages and forced religious conversions of non-Muslims and minors. This sanctions package does not include any other Pakistani national.
• The sanctions effectively mean that designated individuals will be unable to do any business or undertake economic activity with UK citizens or businesses, and that they will be denied entry to the UK

3. Air ambulance service to be launched

• Sky Wings Aviation Company is going to launch an air ambulance service in the name of slain journalist Arshad Sharif.
• Arshad Sharif Shaheed Air Ambulance Service will be available on domestic routes, said Chief Executive Officer Imran Aslam.
• A King Air 200 and a Cessna 402C, both fully equipped with medical equipment, will be used for the air ambulance service from hospital to hospital on domestic destinations


4. `Google to open office next week`

• While Twitter and Facebook have expressed their inability to establish offices in Pakistan in near future, the world`s largest search engine and video-sharing platform Google is set to open a liaison office in Pakistan.
• IT and Telecom Minister Syed Aminul Haque on December 09, 2022 announced the global giant has already registered itself as a company in Pakistan.
• `A delegation of Google is scheduled to come to Pakistan early next week from Singapore and the company will likely announce the establishment of a functional office here,` Mr Haque told.

5. US rejects WTO steel ruling

• Washington condemned the World Trade Organisation`s verdict on December 09, 2022 on the punitive US tariffs imposed on national security grounds on steel imports from China and other countries.
• Former US president Donald Trump`s administration introduced the tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from China, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey and his successor, Joe Biden, has stuck with them.
• `The United States strongly rejects the flawed interpretation and conclusions in the WTO Panel reports released today…,` Adam Hodge, spokesman for the US Trade Representative Katherine Tai, said in a statement
