December 16, 2019: National Current Affairs

1. PM to be guest of honour at Bahrain ceremony today

• Prime Minister Imran Khan will visit Bahrain on December 16, 2019 (today) on the invitation of King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa to attend the National Day of Bahrain as a guest of honour.
• The prime minister will be accompanied by a high level delegation including members of the cabinet and senior government officials, the media wing of PM Office said on Sunday in a press release.
• This is the prime minister`s first visit to Bahrain and during the visit Mr Khan will have one-on-one meeting with King Hamad and will hold delegation level talks with CrownPrince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa. The exchange of views would cover the entire gamut of bilateral relations and matters pertaining to regional and international issues.
• Bahrain`s highest civil award will also be conferred upon the prime minister

2. GB businessman elected FPCCI vice chief

• Noted businessman from Gilgit-Baltistan, Mohammad Ali Quaid, has been elected vice-president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI).
• He was elected unopposed as his rival candidate withdrew the nomination. The elections are scheduled on Dec 27 in Karachi. Mr Ali was former president GB importers and exporters body, and founding president of the Nagar Chamber of Commerce and Industries.
• Trade bodies of the region congratulated him for his unopposed election as vice-president of FPCCI

3. Adab-i-Latif`s Siddiga Begum passes away

• Siddiqa Begum, the chief editor of the oldest Urdu literary journal of the country Adab-i-Latif, passed away after a protracted illness on December 15, 2019.
• Daughter of Chaudhry Barkat Ali, who founded Adab-i-Latif back in 1935, Siddiqa Begum took control of the journal in 1981 when poet Nasir Zaidi relinquished the post of its editor. She co-edited it for a couple of years with known literary figures like Kishwar Naheed and then Masood Ashar.
• In the first edition of the journal under her in January 1981, she had Kishwar Naheed, Mustansar Hussain Tarar and Ghalib Ahmed as honourary editors

4. Sindh cancels registration of over 7,100 NGOs

• A recent campaign in Sindh has led to a disclosure that nearly 70 per cent of the registered non-governmental organisations (NGOs) do not share their financial records, including their sources of funding, audit reports and activities with authorities as required under the law, leading to the cancellation of registration of more than 7,000 NGOs after multiple warnings, officials and sources said.
• The move, they said, was part of the government campaign to streamline the data of NGOs across the province a task that had not been carried out in decades and in the process it had found out that more than 10,000 these organisations were registered with the regulatory body with most of them enjoying no checks.

5. US expelled two Chinese diplomats on spying claims, says NYT

• The United States quietly expelled two Chinese embassy officials in September after they drove onto a sensitive military base in Virginia, The New York Times reported on December 15, 2019.
• The newspaper, which cited multiple people with knowledge of the episode, said it appeared to be the first time in more than 30 years that the US has expelled Chinese diplomats on suspicion of espionage.
• At least one of the diplomats was believed to be an intelligence officer operating under cover, the Times said.
• The incident comes as the United States and China, the world`s two biggest economies, wrangle over trade. The two sides announced a mini-deal on Friday to reduce some tariffs

6. US likely to pull out 4,000 troops from Afghanistan soon

• The Trump administration intended to announce the drawdown of about 4,000 troops from Afghanistan early next week, US officials told.
• `The drawdown could be … a unilateral concession to the Taliban,` other officials told CNN. `The smaller US military presence will be largely focused on counterterrorism operations against groups like Al Qaeda and ISIS-K,` they added.
• The officials, however, acknowledged the expected withdrawal could `reduce considerably` the US military`s ability to train and advise local Afghan forces.
• The United States still has between 12,000 and 13,000 troops in Afghanistan.

7. New Wave icon Anna Karina dies at 79

• Danish-French actress Anna Karina, muse of New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard, has died of cancer at the age of 79.
• Karina, who epitomised Sixties chic with her elfin features and big kohl-rimmed blue eyes, starred in seven films made by her ex-husband Godard, including “Pierrot Le Fou”.
• She also had some success as a singer, recording the hit “Sous Le Soleil Exactement” with Serge Gainsbourg for his musical “Anna” in 1967

8. Jamaican student crowned Miss World

• Jamaican psychology student Toni-Ann Singh was crowned Miss World on December 14, 2019 at a ceremony in London, with Miss France and Miss India runners-up in the beauty pageant.
• `To that little girl in St Thomas, Jamaica and all the girls around the world, please believe in yourself,` Singh, 23, tweeted. `Please know that you are worthy and capable of achieving your dreams. This crown is not mine but yours.
• You have a PURPOSE,` she wrote.
• Singh was crowned by last year`s winner, Mexican Vanessa Ponce de Leon. Singh is the fourth Jamican to win the title. France`s Ophely Mezino and India`s Suman Rao were the runners-up

9. Abid`s record debut century enlivens drawn Test

• The figure of Abid Ali emerged as a new giant of Pakistan cricket in the glorious sunshine of December 15, 2019 when the diminutive opener rewrote history books by scoring a brilliant Test debut century during the predictable stalemate against Sri Lanka at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.
• After four days of heartbreak with 528 minutes amounting to final total of 268.1 overs being eaten by the bad weather had made the contest farcical in what should have been a historic first match of the landmark two-Test series, the final day turned out to be a stark contrast to the preceding chain of events, as Abid became the first batsman on the planet to score hundred on debut both in One-day International and Test formats.
• The 32-year-old followed his 112 on his maiden ODI appearance against Australia in Dubai last March with an undefeated 109 which was the second of three hundreds churned out on day five to join the exalted band of batsmen launching their Test careers in the manner.
• Right-handed Abid provided the 12th instance of a Pakistani reaching three figures and the first in 10 years after Fawad Alam, who warmed the bench in this drawn game, and Umar Akmal were the last two in 2009.

10. Tokyo 2020 unveils heat-busting stadium

• Tokyo formally unveiled its 60,000-seater main Olympic Stadium on December 15, 2019, more than seven months before the 2020 Opening Ceremony with a host of special features to beat the feared heat.
• Built on the site of the former national stadium used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, it has five floors above ground and two below, with greenery planted on the decks to provide shade from the scorching summer sun. The eaves around the outer perimeter keep out sunlight and rain and will help channel breeze into the stadium. There are also eight mist spraying facilities, 185 fans and 16 air-conditioned lounges.
• Opening the facility, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hailed its `top-level universal design` and `harmony with its surrounding environment
