1. Rethink in Islamabad over moot in Malaysia to pacify Saudis

• Pakistan is reconsidering its decision to participate in the upcoming Kuala Lumpur Summit after Saudi Arabia expressed its reservations.
• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan told reporters on December 16, 2019 that a decision on Prime Minister Imran Khan`s participation in the event would be taken after his return from the ongoing overseas trip to Bahrain and Switzerland on Wednesday (Dec 18).
• The summit, which is being participated by over 400 Muslim leaders, intellectuals, scholars and thinkers from 52 countries, will begin on Dec 18 in Kuala Lumpur, while the foreign leaders will meet on Dec 19 to explore new and workable solutions for problems afflicting the Muslim world


2. Indian network behind disinformation campaigns against Pakistan exposed

• A European group has uncovered a network of obscure NGOs and think tanks that assist over 200 `fake` news outlets managed by an Indian network to influence the European Union and the United Nations with content critical of Pakistan.
• The `EU Dis info Lab` is focused on researching and tackling sophisticated disinformation campaigns targeting the EU, its member states, core institutions and core values.
• The non-governmental group in its initial findings earlier in November had uncovered a network of 265 `fake` news outlets managed by an Indian network to influence the EU and the UN with con-tent critical of Pakistan
• During the investigation, the DisinfoLab found that the fake websites copy-pasted anti-Pakistan content from unusual press agencies and amplified material shared by politicians and obscure think tanks that supported Indian geopolitical interests. They republished anti-Pakistan content on the rest of the Indian network including fake outlets such as EP Today, Times of Geneva, and New Delhi Times. Most websites had Twitter presence as well.


3. Bahrain`s highest civil award conferred on Imran

• King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa conferred upon Prime Minister Imran Khan the Gulf state`s highest civil award `The King Hamad Order of the Renaissance` at a ceremony held in Manama on December 16, 2019.
• The king received the prime minister upon his arrival at the Sakhir Palace.
• Later, Prime Minister Khan and Crown Prince of Bahrain Salman bin Hamad bin Isa al Khalifa discussed bilateral issues as well as the regional situation during a meeting that took place at Al Ghudaibya Palace.
• The prime minister was accorded a guard of honour on his arrival at Al Ghudaibya Palace for the official meeting with the crown prince


4. Minister unveils policy allowing private companies to run trains

• Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed has announced a `track access policy` under which private companies will be able to run their trains on Pakistan Railways` (PR) tracks after paying for it.
• `They may pay to run their engines and coaches on our tracks. Such a project would economically benefit Pakistan Railways to a great extent, he told a press conference at his camp office here on December 16, 2019.


5. Weak household consumption to curb India`s growth: Moody`s

• MOODY`S Investors Service on December 16, 2019 said that India`s weak household consumption will curb economic growth and weigh on the credit quality of Indian issuers in a range of sectors.
• Moody`s has lowered its GDP growth projection for India for the fiscal year ending March 2020 to 4.9 per cent from 5.8pc.
• The major factors responsible for weakening economic growth were rural financial stress, low job creation and liquidity constraints, Moody`s Investors Service said in a report.


6. Xi gives Hong Kong leader `unwavering support`

• Chinese President Xi Jinping told beleaguered Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam on December 16, 2019 that she had Beijing`s `unwavering support` despite another huge prodemocracy rally earlier this month and her government`s thrashing at recent local elections.
• The city has been upended by six months of massive pro-democracy protests that have seen violent battles between police and hardcore demonstrators, as well as regular transport disruption.
• Protesters have called for the unpopular Lam to stand down as leader, but she received the backing of China`s leadership during a visit to Beijing on December 16, 2019


7. Naravane to be new Indian army chief

• Lt Gen Manoj Mukund Naravane is set to become the next chief of the 1.3 million-strong Indian Army, Press Trust of India said quoting official sources on December 16, 2019.
• Lt Gen Naravane is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army.
• Current Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat is due for retirement on Dec 31.
• Before taking charge as vice chief of the Army Staff in September, Lt Gen Naravane was heading the Eastern Command of the Army which takes care of India`s nearly 4,000-km border with China.


8. Stalemate broken in talks with S. Arabia, says Qatar

• Qatar`s foreign minister on December 16, 2019 voiced optimism over ending a bitter rift with Riyadh, saying early talks broke a `stalemate` but stressed Doha`s unwillingness to downgrade ties with Turkey as a precondition.
• Saudi Arabia along with its allies the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt cut all diplomatic and transport ties with Qatar in June 2017.
• The four nations accused Doha of backing radical Islamists, including the Muslim Brotherhood, and seeking closer ties with Saudi arch rival Tehran allegations Qatar vehemently denies


9. France`s pensions chief resigns as strike frustrates commuters

• The French official leading a pension reform drive that has unleashed a crippling public transport strike resigned over undeclared payments on December 16, 2019 as citizens endured a 12th day of commuter misery with their holiday plans hanging in the balance.
• Jean-Paul Delevoye became the target of unions` ire after admitting he had failed to disclose 13 private sector posts, paid and unpaid, in a recent asset declaration.
• One of his jobs, as president of an education think-tank, paid nearly 5,400 euros ($6,000) a month on top of his government salary money he should have forfeited under a 2013 political transparency law.


10. Jhal Magsi desert jeep rally concludes

• Jhal Magsi Annual Desert Jeep Rally 2019 concluded on December 16, 2019.
• Zain Mehmood, Noman Saranjam, Makhdoom Ali Shah and Zafar Khan Baloch have won four different categories of the rally in which 74 drivers contested in the 225km track.
• Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani had kicked off the jeep rally on December 14, 2019.
• A special track was prepared for the combat. In the first phase, 45 vehicles contested, while final round was played between 29 drivers.
• According to the final scorecard, Zain Mehmood was on top in the A category, Sahibzada Sultan came second and Jaffar Khan Magsi secured third position
