6. Nigerian forces kill children in air strike over border in Niger

• The Nigerian military has killed and wounded children in an airstrike in neighbouring Niger, a local governor in Niger, state television and an aid agency said on February 20, 2022, although Nigeria`s armed forces said they were still investigating.
• The attack took place in the village of Nachad in the region of Maradi, Niger, on Friday, a few kilometres from the border with Nigeria, said Chaibou Aboubacar, the governor of Maradi. He said seven children were killed and five wounded.
• He did not say how he knew that Nigerian forces carried out the attack. Niger`s state television also said it was carried out by Nigerian forces, without providing evidence


7. UN court resumes hearings into Rohingya genocide case

• An international case accusing Myanmar of genocide against the Rohingya ethnic minority returns to the United Nations` highest court on Monday amid questions over whether the country`s military rulers should even be allowed to represent the Southeast Asian nation.
• Four days of public hearings at the International Court of Justice start Monday into Myanmar`s preliminary objections to the case that was brought by Gambia, an African nation acting on behalf of an organisation of Muslim nations that accuses Myanmar of genocide in its crackdown on the Rohingya.
• In August 2017, Myanmar`s military launched what it called a clearance campaign in Rakhine state in the country`s west in response to an attack by a Rohingya insurgent group. The campaign forced more than 700,000 Rohingya to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh and led to accusations that security forces committed mass rapes and killings and burned thousands of homes

• Turkey is seizing on its geographic advantage to woo companies as the skyrocketing cost of sea freight and pandemic-related disruptions to supply chains push some European companies to reduce their dependence on Asia.
• President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose policies have contributed to the lira`s plunge, has promoted a new slogan for exports: `Made in Turkiye`, using the country`s language instead of the internationally-known `Made in Turkey`


9. Wasim Akram formally inducted into PCB Hall of Fame

• Former Pakistan legend Wasim Akram was formally inducted into the Pakistan Cricket Board Hall of Fame on February 20, 2022.
• The 1992 World Cup winner, who took a total of 916 wickets and scored 6,615 runs in an international career from 1984 to 2003, was presented with a commemorative cap and plaque by West Indies great Sir Vivian Richards ahead of the HBL Pakistan Super League match between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators.
• Wasim joins the likes of Abdul Qadir, Fazal Mahmood, Hanif Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad, Waqar Younis and Zaheer Abbas in the PCB Hall of Fame


10. Beijing drops curtain on `exceptional` winter games

• China doused the Olympic flame on Sunday night, closing Beijing Games that will be remembered for the extremes of its anti-Covid measures and outrage over the doping scandal that enveloped 15-year-old Russian skating sensation Kamila Valieva.
• Chinese President Xi Jinping was on hand for the snowflake-themed ceremony at the Bird`s Nest stadium, where International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach described the Beijing Games as `truly exceptional` before declaring them closed.
• The Beijing Games, contained inside a `closed loop`, were the second Olympics in six months to be deprived by Covid-19 of much of its festivity.
