1. First H1N1 case of this year surfaces at BVH

• The first-ever case of seasonal influenza (H1N1) of year 2020 surfaced here after a woman was hospitalised at Bahawal Victoria Hospital (BVH) on February 5, 2020.
• According to the doctors of BVH emergency ward, woman named Parveen (48) belonging to Khanqah Sharif [Ahmedpur East Road] was tested positive for seasonal influenza.
• She was being treated for H1N1 at isolation ward. The doctors on duty stated that her condition was stable but she was under constant observation.
• The doctors have advised the general public to protect themselves particularly the minors from the chilly weather to avoid the disease.


2. Imran, Mahathir agree to take strategic partnership to new level

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has expressed his gratitude for Malaysia`s support on the issue of Kashmir and reaffirmed Islamabad`s commitment to fostering bilateral ties with Kuala Lumpur.
• According to a statement issued on the conclusion of Prime Minister Khan`s two-day official visit to Malaysia on February 5, 2020, Prime Minister Khan and his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamad reaffirmed their shared desire to maintain regular high-level contact and expand bilateral economic, trade and investment ties in diversified fields.
• During their one-on-one meeting and subsequent bilateral delegation meetings, Malaysia and Pakistan firmly stressed that the question of Palestine the situation in India-held Kashmir, and the Rohingya issue should be resolved on the basis of the relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and General Assembly (UNGA) resolutions.


3. Foreign driving licences are valid now

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has directed the relevant authorities to accept driving licences issued by other countries.
• The directives were issued by the prime minister in response to hundreds of requests made by expatriates on the Prime Minister`s Portal.
• In response to the directive, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) issued an order, asking all staff, including deputy superintendents of traffic police, to accept driving licences issued by other countries.
• The order further stated that the ITP staff should not fine drivers holding valid foreign driving licences


4. German ministry, UNDP sign agreement

• The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed an agreement on February 5, 2020 for the promotion of rule of law and empowering governmental and non-governmental stakeholders for implementing human rights mandates to be carried out in collaboration with federal and provincial institutions of Pakistan.
• The agreement was signed in Islamabad between German Ambassador to Pakistan Bernhard Stephan Schlagheck and UNDP Pakistan acting resident representative Ignacio Artaza.
• Speaking on the occasion, Mr Artaza said the German government had been supporting UNDP’s rights-based governance interventions in Pakistan since 2016 which have contributed in strengthening the human rights ecosystem of the country. He thanked the ministry for signing the agreement


5. Army pilots conferred French national award

• Commander of French joint force in Indian Ocean Rear Admiral Didier Malterre on February 5, 2020 conferred the French National Defence Bronze Medal on the Pakistan Army Aviation pilots who took part in the daring operation that rescued French mountaineer Elisabeth Revol from Nanga Parbat.
• A special ceremony was held at the army museum to confer the medals on the brave pilots who rescued the French mountaineer, said the Inter-Services Public Relations.
• Chief of General Staff, Pakistan Army, Lt Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza, senior military officers and officers from Pakistan Army Aviation attended the ceremony.
• In January 2018, Ms Revol was stranded at Nanga Parbat. The Pakistan Army Aviation pilots executed the daring operation and rescued the mountaineer at the request of the French Embassy.


6. S. Arabia unwilling to back OIC ministers` meeting on Kashmir

• As the Senior Officials Meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation starts in Jeddah on Feb 9 (Sunday) to make preparations for the OIC`s Council of Foreign Ministers, a diplomatic source said on February 5, 2020 that Saudi Arabia has shown reluctance to accept Pakistan`s request for an immediate meeting of the CFM on Kashmir.
• Islamabad`s feeling of unease with the OIC on its failure to get the CFM`s meeting appears to be growing.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan voiced frustration over the OIC`s silence on Kashmir while speaking at a think-tank during his visit to Malaysia.
• He said: `The reason is that we have no voice and there is a total division amongst [us]. We can`t even come together as a whole on the OIC meeting on Kashmir


7. US forces will not do law enforcement in Afghanistan, says Trump

• US President Donald Trump used the last state of the union address of his term to restress his pledge to withdraw American troops from Afghanistan, telling his nation on February 4, 2020 night that their forces were not law enforcement agencies for others.
• In the small portion devoted to foreign policy issues, Mr Trump took credit for the assassination of Iranian general Qassim Soleimani in Iraq last month, but he also proclaimed his commitment to peace.
• `As we defend American lives, we are working to end America`s wars in the Middle East,` he said. `We are working to finally end America`s longest war (in Afghanistan) and bring our troops back home,` he added, earning a warm applause from the audience


8. Avalanches kill 33 rescuers, five others in Turkey

• At least 33 people were killed in eastern Turkey February 5, 2020 by a second avalanche which buried a team of rescuers searching for people hit by the first the day before.
• The bodies of 33 rescue workers and civilians were discovered in Van province, where they had been helping dig out a minibus buried by snow late on February 4, 2020, the government`s disaster agency AFAD said. Five people aboard the vehicle were killed, taking the overall toll to 38.
• Eight people had been rescued alive from the first avalanche.
• Television images showed dozens of people scrambling up the mountains, digging through snow in blizzards to find those trapped under the snow.


9. Bangladesh arrive for first Pakistan Test

• The Bangladesh cricket squad has returned to Pakistan for the second leg of the bilateral series, which includes their first Test match in the country since 2003.
• Bangladesh were originally scheduled to play three Twenty20 Internationals and two Test matches, but agreed to split the tour into three phases because it did not want to stay in Pakistan for a longer duration because of security concerns.
• Pakistan won the T20 series 2-0 last month at Lahore, with the third game abandoned because of rain.
• Bangladesh lost 3-0 to Pakistan in their last Test series here in 2003, which included the home team`s nail-biting one-wicket victory at Multan, set up by hometown hero Inzamam-ul-Haq`s brilliant 138 not out


10. Nepal`s first home ODI ends in defeat

• Thousands of fans turned up to watch Nepal play their first ever official One-day International (ODI) on home soil in Kathmandu on February 5, 2020 but Oman spoiled the party as they won by 18 runs.
• It was the first of six matches in a tri-series that also includes the United States at the Kirtipur Cricket Ground, which was packed on a special day for the Himalayan nation.
• Put into bat by Nepal, Oman scored 197 for nine in their 50 overs, with middle order batsman Mohammad Nadeem anchoring the innings and finishing with a patient 69 not out off 96 balls.
• Nepal were all out for 179 despite late heroics by Sandeep Lamichhane after Sharad Vesawlcar scored 55 at the top of the order
