1. UN chief calls for implementation of Kashmir resolutions

• Taking notice of over 200day long curfew in India-held Kashmir, United Nations secretary general Antonio Guterres on February 16, 2020 called upon India to ensure that the people of the occupied valley enjoyed the same fundamental rights and freedom of movement as being enjoyed by the people of Azad Kashmir.
• Speaking at a joint press conference with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, he called for resolution of the Kashmir dispute by honouring resolutions of the UN Security Council. The UN chief offered his role as a mediator and said his good offices could be used for this purpose.
• Talking about the relations between Pakistan and India,he stressed the need for de-escalation, both militarily and verbally.
• The press conference took place after a meeting between Mr Guterres and Mr Qureshi.


2. Punjabi radio channel to air first children`s show

• The FM 95 Punjab Rung radio channel is all set to start broadcasting a new programme for children, Jag Mag Kerday Taray.
• The programme, which will air at 7am, will feature poems, folklores, anecdotes, sayings, quotes, quizzes, discussion on issues such as climate, plantation, pollution, waste management, hygiene, mannerism, sense of responsibility, grooming , love for culture and much more.
• Saman Rai, the director general of Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture that manages the radio channel, told Dawn that the programme will launch on Feb 17 and had been planned in view of the dearth of dedicated shows for children. She said the main idea was to acquaint children with Punjabi language while laying equal stress on their education through entertainment, music and literature


3. World is losing battle to control carbon emissions: UN secretary general

• The world is losing the battle to control carbon emissions, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on February 16, 2020, adding that people should invest in green energy because of the high dividends.
• `Green economy is good economy. I have personally invested in the Green Fund and it is growing more as compared to my other investments. So green economy is growing faster than others as it is future of the world,` he said at a session on sustainable development and climate change in Islamabad.
• Mr Guterres suggested focusing on solar energy as it is cost effective when compared to the production of energy through fossil fuel and also because the continued production of fossil fuel energy in the future would be a mistake.


4. Ivanka Trump lauds S. Arabia, UAE on women’s rights reforms

• Ivanka Trump lauded on February 16, 2020 a handful of Mideast countries, including close US allies Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, for embarking on significant reforms to advance women’s rights, while speaking at a gathering of women entrepreneurs and regional leaders in Dubai.
• The daughter of US President Donald Trump was delivering the keynote address at the two-day Global Women’s Forum held in an opulent resort overlooking the city’s Persian Gulf coastline. We know that when women are free to succeed, families thrive, communities flourish and nations are stronger, Trump said.
• The theme of the forum in Dubai was The Power of Influence. It was an apt theme for Trump, whose loyalty and support for her father’s presidency saw her and her husband, Jared Kushner, take up formal roles in the White House as his advisers


5. Trump`s offer prompted India to annex Kashmir: report

• US President Donald Trump`s offer to mediate between India and Pakistan over the Kashmir dispute might have prompted New Delhi to annex the occupied valley, says a report prepared for the US Congress.
• The Congressional Research Service (CRS) noted that on July 22, 2019, while taking questions from the press alongside Prime Minister Imran Khan in the White House, President Trump claimed that Indian Prime Minister Modi had earlier in the month asked him to play a mediator`s role in the Kashmir dispute.
• Mr Trump`s statement provoked an uproar in India`s parliament, with opposition members staging a walkout and demanding explanation, forcing the Indian government to assure the opposition that Mr Modi never made such an offer.


6. Iran`s beleaguered president rules out resignation

• Iran`s President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday ruled out resigning and vowed to see out his term, even as he admitted he had offered to step aside twice since being elected.
• Speaking ahead of a general election next Friday, Rouhani also appealed to voters to turn out despite the fact that many moderate and reformist candidates were disqualified from the race. Rumours have swirled in Iran recently that the 71-year-old, whose second and last term ends next year, had been planning to quit, but his office denied the reports.
• Rouhani`s government has come under fire over the state of Iran`s sanctions-hit economy and for allegedly failing to fulfil election promises.


7. Pakistan beat India to win Kabaddi World Cup

• Pakistan won the World Circle-Style Kabaddi Cup 2020 after defeating archrivals India 43-41 at the Punjab Stadium Lahore on February 16, 2020.
• It`s for the first time that Pakistan laid hands at the World Cup as defending champions India six time winner could not continue their so far unbeatable spree.
• Carrying national flags in their hands, Pakistan players took a round of the stadium.


8. Defending champs Magsi, Patel win Cholistan Jeep Rally

• Both Nadir Magsi and Tushna Patel, the defending champions, maintained their supremacy in their respective categories in the 15th Cholistan Jeep Rally by securing first positions in the annual event held at the Derawar Fort, some 70km from on February 16, 2020.
• As per official results announced at the prize-distribution ceremony, seasoned racer Magsi covered the total 466kms distance in two rounds in four hours, 28 minutes and 50 seconds (4.28.50).
• Earlier, Mr Magsi had also topped the rally`s prepaid category`s first round (2201(ms) held on Friday at the Derawar Fort.
• Racers Asif Fazal and Faisal stood second and third, respectively, in the main prepaid category. Asif covered the distance in four hours, 37 minutes and 49 seconds (4.37.49) while Faisal it four hours, 39 minutes and 41 seconds (4.39.41)


9. Squash legend Jahangir to carry PSL trophy for unveiling ceremony

• For what will be the first ever trophy unveiling ceremony on the Pakistan soil, squash icon Jahangir Khan will bring the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 trophy at the National Stadium in Karachi on Feb 19.
• In an international-styled ceremony, Jahangir will carry the silverware to the field of play and hand it over to captain Sarfraz Ahmed of defending champions Quetta Gladiators after which the brand new trophy will be unveiled by PCB chairman Ehsan Mani in the presence of six franchise owners and captains.


10. Uganda`s Cheptegei smashes 5km world record

• Uganda`s Joshua Cheptegel shattered the 5km road world record in Monaco on February 16, 2020, shaving 27 seconds off the mark set by Kenya`s Rhonex Kipruto last month.
• Cheptegei, the 10,000m world champion, crossed the finish line in 12 minutes and 51 seconds in his first race of the year to eclipse Kipruto`s effort from the 10K Valencia Ibercaja in Spain last month.
• Kipruto had set the mark en route to the 10km road world record and Cheptegel revealed he had set out to `really go for` breaking the sub 13 minutes barrier.
