1. 200,000 CNICs fraudulently obtained by Afghans cancelled

• As many as 200,000 computerised national identity cards (CNICs) fraudulently obtained by Afghan nationals have been cancelled, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said on January 2, 2021.
• Talking to reporters at the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office at Rehmanabad, he said these cards had been issued to Afghan nationals on the basis of bogus documents, including fake birth certificates.
• The data of 1.5 million Afghan refugees was with Pakistan and about 800,000Afghan refugees were living in the country illegally


2. Anyone speaking against Army will be taken to task in 72 hours

• Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed yesterday said that opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has “accepted defeat” following its decision to contest the by-elections.
• The 11-party alliance of opposition parties, in its January 1 meeting, had also decided to participate in the Senate elections but they are only befooling the masses by saying otherwise, the minister said while addressing a press conference at the NADRA Registration Centre here


3. Pak Army shoots down another Indian spying quadcopter

• Pakistan Army on January 2, 2021 shot down an Indian spying quadcopter in Chakothi Sector along the Line of Control.
• (ISPR) Directorate, the quadcopter intruded 500 meters on Pakistan’s side of the Line of Control. Similarly, on January 1, 2021, another Indian quadcopter was shot down by Pakistan Army in Nausheri Sector along the Line of Control


4. Pakistan, 3 other countries need $2.8bn humanitarian response funding: UN

• The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA) says total funding requirements for the humanitarian response plans for four countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Pakistan, in 2021 amounts to more than $2.8 billion to address the needs of over 21 million people.
• OCHA`s `Global Humanitarian Overview` for 2021 includes Humanitarian Response Plans for Afghanistan, Myanmar, Pakistan, and a refugee response plan for Bangladesh


5. Punjab ends free Wi-Fi facility for public because of `heavy subsidy`

• The Punjab government on January 2, 2021 permanently shut down the facility of free Wi-Fi in the province apparently to get rid of the heavy subsidy it had to pay for its provision to the public.
• The Punjab Wi-Fi project aimed at provision of free internet service to the public at 200 different places of the province was launched in Dec 2016 by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government


6. ACE arrests gang for leaking PPSC papers

• The Anti-Corruption Establishment Punjab has arrested a gang of four persons involved in paper leakage and selling.
• The accused namely Waqar Akram, Junior Data Entry Operator at PPSC, Ghazanfar an employee of Finance Department, Gohar Ali an MPhil History student at University of the Punjab and Mazhar Iqbal a private person were caught red-handed by ACE Special Investigation team just two hours before the paper for 58 posts of Tehsildar, Consolidation/ Hill Torrent Officer, Reader to member Board of Revenue (BS-16) was scheduled to be conducted across Punjab by the Punjab Public Service Commission.
• As many as 1,03,487 candidates had applied for the competitive examination against advertised 58 lucrative posts in the Punjab Revenue Department


7. Pfizer, BioNTech to offer vaccine to volunteers who got placebo

• PFlZER Inc and its partner BioNTech Se plan to give volunteers who received a placebo in its Covid-19 vaccine trial an option to receive a first dose of the vaccine by March 1, 2021, while staying within the study.
• The trial`s Vaccine Transition Option allows all participants aged 16 or older the choice to discover whether they were given the placebo, `and for participants who learn they received the placebo, to have the option to receive the investigational vaccine while staying in the study,` the companies said on their website https: N www.covidvaccinestudy


8. Tokyo calls for state of emergency over virus third wave

• Tokyo’s governor on January 2, 2021 asked Japan’s central government to declare a new state of emergency as the country battles a third wave of the coronavirus, with record numbers of new cases.
• Yuriko Koike, joined by the governors of three neighbouring regions, called for the measure to be imposed in their areas during a meeting with Yasutoshi Nishimura, the minister in charge of the coronavirus response


9. Trains powered by human waste to be introduced in Britain

• Amid plans to phase out dirty diesel engines, trains run on gas made from human and animal waste and discarded food could join the rolling stock of Britain’s railways.
• The ‘BioUltra’ railcar is the brainchild of a team of engineers led by the Worcester-based Ultra Light Rail Partners — and will be able to carry up to 120 passengers.
• With a top speed of 50 mph, the 66 feet (20m) long car will turn biomethane gas into electrical power which will charge the train’s batteries and drive its motors.


10. US Congress slaps Trump by overriding veto of defence bill

• The US Congress on January 1, 2021 dealt Donald Trump a humiliating blow in his last days in office with the Senate voting overwhelmingly to override his veto of a sweeping defence bill the first time lawmakers have done so during his presidency.
• By a lopsided vote of 81-13, well more than the two-thirds of the 100-member chamber required, the Republican-controlled Senate approved the $740.5 billion National Defence Authorisation Act to fund the militaryfornscalyear2021.
• The Democratic-led House of Representatives had voted 322 to 87 on Monday to override Trump`s veto
