1. Pakistan conducts flight test of Shaheen-111

• Pakistan has conducted a successful flight test of Shaheen-3 surface-to-surface ballistic missile, having a range of 2750 kilometres.
• The flight test was aimed at revalidating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system.
• The flight test, with its impact point in the Arabian Sea, was witnessed by General Nadeem Raza, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC); Director General Strategic Plans Division; Commander Army Strategic Forces Command; Chairman NESCOM and the scientists and engineers. The ISPR further said that the President, Prime Minister, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee and Services Chiefs have congratulated the scientists and engineers on the successful flight test


2. Biden takes the helm, vows to end `uncivil war`

• Democrat Joe Biden was sworn in as president of the United States on January 20, 2021, vowing to end the `uncivil war` in a deeply divided country reeling from a battered economy and a raging coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 400,000 Americans.
• With the US Capitol encircled by thousands of armed troops two weeks after a mob laid siege to it, Biden took the oath of office administered by US Chief Justice John Roberts and became the oldest US president in history at age 78


3. Oxford vaccine may cost around $6 in Pakistan

• The government is likely to bear $6 to $7 per dose of millions of shots if it opts to pick the Oxford-AstraZeneca`s Covid-19 vaccine, which has been approved by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), though its sole authorised local distributor is at the moment unable to give a proper timeline for the supply, it emerged on Wednesday.
• `Since the government has allowed it [the Oxford AstraZeneca`s Covid-19 vaccine] and given us the nod to import the consignments, we have estimated that it would be available to the government for something between US$6 and US$7,` said Usman Ghani of the Sindh Medical Stores, one of the biggest importers of vaccines and other pharmaceutical products in Pakistan.


4. Drastic civil service reforms unveiled

• The federal government has said that reforms in the civil service would pave the way for `forced` retirement of delinquent officers from government service and introduction of tough criteria for promotion of bureaucrats.
• Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood, who is also chairman of the Cabinet Committee on Institutional Reforms, told a press conference on January 20, 2021 that Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday approved these reforms and that the rules that governed the civil service had been brought in conformity with the reforms


5. Public holiday declared on February 5

• The Government of Pakistan has declared public holiday on February 5, 2021 to observe the “Kashmir Solidarity Day”.
• The public holiday will be marked by all provincial governments including Gilgit-Baltistan, AJ&K and Islamabad Capital Territory, says a press release received here from Ministry of Interior.


6. Israel invites bids for 2,500 settler homes: watchdog

• Israel has invited tenders for more than 2,500 new settler homes in annexed east Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank, a watchdog said on Wednesday, hours before Joe Biden`s swearing-in as US president.
• On Sunday, Israel approved 780 new settler homes in the West Bank ahead of a March general election in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to face a fierce challenge from the right, from pro-settler candidate Gideon Saar


7. Partial lockdown in Beijing as UK virus variant detected

• 1.6 million residents were banned from leaving Beijing on January 20, 2021 as two Covid-19 cases linked to a new UK virus variant were found in the Chinese capital.
• China has lauded its response to the pandemic, which emerged in the central city of Wuhan just over a year ago but has been broadly brought to heel, officially killing fewer than 5,000 Chinese people.
• Authorities have been swift to stamp out local clusters of cases with lockdowns, mass testing regimes and travel restrictions.


8. Trump leaves White House, skips Biden inauguration

• US President Donald Trump left the White House for the final time on January 20, 2021, heading by helicopter to a nearby military base where he will fly to Florida, skipping the inauguration of successor Joe Biden in an extraordinary break with tradition.
• Trump, 74, and First Lady Melania Trump walked a short red carpet and boarded Marine One on the White House lawn on a sunny but chilly day in Washington for the short flight to Joint Base Andrews where he will board Air Force One.
• Trump will be at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida when Biden is sworn in at noon (1700 GMT) as the 46th president of the United States.


9. UN Security Council to hold urgent meeting Thursday on Darfur: diplomats

• The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Thursday on ethnic fighting that has left at least 155 people dead in the Darfur region of Sudan, diplomats said.
• The meeting will be held behind closed doors and has been requested by three non-permanent members of the council Norway
