1. 2.5m doses of Moderna vaccine arrive from US
• Pakistan on July 2, 2021 received 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine from the US, with a senior American official in the federal capital confirming that Washington would be sending more in future.
• In another development, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) issued notices to some foreign airlines for causing inconvenience to passengers by the sudden cancellation of flights.
• Charge d` Affaires at the US embassy Angela P. Aggeler said the vaccines, which arrived at Islamabad International Airport, would save lives and help Pakistan emerge from the Covid-19 crisis, which had devastated so many families and communities in both countries
2. Punjab PA disregards law, rules to pass private varsities bills
• The Punjab Assembly seems to have made it a regular practice of introducing private member bills for establishing private universities, bypassing the rules and regulations and the Higher Education Department procedure.
• In March, the House passed private members bills and made them law for establishing three private universities and in June presented similar bills for establishing two more. However, the latter were put on hold on the intervention of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
3. EU, partners launch programme to reform criminal justice system
• The European Union (EU) and its partners launched on Friday a 20 million programme that aims to promote the rule of law and enhance criminal justice system in Pakistan, with a specific focus on areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan.
• The vision behind the five-year programme (2021-2025) is addressing critical and systematic weaknesses in the justice system and reforming it.
• Jointly implemented by UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the programme aims to support reform processes to ensure delivery of people-centred justice, enhance access to justice for all particularly women, the less privileged and marginalised groups
4. Postal stamp on 10th anniversary of SBP Museum issued
• Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan Sima Kamil on July 2, 2021 unveiled a commemorative stamp to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the bank`s museum.
• The design of the stamp is based on the SBP Museum`s building, featuring rich cultural heritage of the country and a manifestation of art in its architecture.
• The building was built by the Imperial Bank of India in 1920 for its branch office in Karachi. In 1950, the building was handed over to the SBP and remained in its use for various purposes till it was converted into the SBP Museum in the 2000s
5. SBP ends E-Form condition for exporters
• The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on July 2, 2021 eliminated the requirement of Electronic Form-E (EFE) by amending the foreign exchange regulations to facilitate exporters.
• Through the Pakistan Single Window and International Platforms, it has notified revisions in foreign exchange regulations for export of goods from the country, the central bank said.
• Key changes include amendments in regulations to facilitate export transactions through the Pakistan Single Window when it becomes operational. `This will eliminate the requirement of EFE for carrying out exports from Pakistan,` said the SBP
6. All US, NATO troops quit key Afghan air base
• American troops pulled out of their main military base in Afghanistan on July 2, 2021, leaving behind a piece of the World Trade Centre they buried 20 years ago in a country that the top US commander has warned may descend into civil war without them.
• `All American soldiers and members of NATO forces have left the Bagram air base,` said a senior US security official on condition of anonymity.
• Though a few more troops have yet to withdraw from another base in the capital Kabul, the Bagram pull-out brings an effective end to the longest war in American history
7. Israeli settlers leave West Bank outpost after deal with govt
• Israeli settlers left an illegal outpost in the occupied West Bank on July 2, 2021 in adherence to an agreement struck with nationalist premier Naftali Bennett`s new government, reporters and a settler leader said.
• With Israeli military and police on site, the last cars streamed out of Eviatar near the Palestinian city of Nablus in compliance with the 4pm deadline to leave the outpost.
• `I hope we`ll be back here very soon,` Sarah Lisson, a mother of six, said before driving off. `We can build a big house
8. Statues of British queens toppled in Canada
• Protesters have toppled statues of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II in the Canadian city of Winnipeg as anger grows over the discovery of the remains of hundreds of children in unmarked graves at former indigenous schools.
• A crowd chanted `no pride in genocide` before pulling down the statues of the monarchs.
• The action took place on Canada Day on July 1, 2021, when traditionally celebrations take place across the country
9. Biden hails `historic` rebound from Covid crisis
• President Joe Biden on July 2, 2021 cheered the `historic` US rebound from the Covid-19 crisis as the economy gained 850,000 new jobs in June, cementing the evidence of a broad recovery.
• The uptick was better than expected and came after two months of disappointing results, with big increases in the hard-hit leisure and hospitality sector, the Labour Department said in its closely-watched monthly report.
• With the latest gains, the world`s largest economy has added 3.3 million jobs in the first six months of the year
10. England crush SL again to seal ODI series
