1. Govt set to launch Kamyab Pakistan Programme this month

• The government has decided in principle to launch `Kamy ab Pakistan Programme` this month under which four million households would be assisted in various schemes.
• The programme appears to be one of the major initiatives taken by the government for the poor segment of society ahead of next elections.
• Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said: `We have finalised every aspect of this programme, and it would be launched in mid-July


2. Train service for tourists launched in Quetta

• In a move aimed at promoting tourism in Balochistan, Pakistan Railways has launched a special train service.
• The train will run between Quetta and Bostan as well as Quetta and Kolpur twice a week, with fare ranging from Rs20 to Rs50.
• Quetta Divisional Superintendent Engineer Akhtar Mahmood inaugurated the train service here at a ceremony held at Quetta Railways Station.
• The first train with a large number of tourists aboard left for Bostan from Quetta. The tourists showed great interest in the service and termed it a milestone for promoting tourism in the province


3. Trade deficit widens 34pc to $31.1bln in FY2021

• Trade deficit widened 34.1 percent to $31.1 billion during the last fiscal year of 2021/22 as merchandise exports and imports were seen significantly recovering, according to official data on July 3, 2021.
• In July-June, exports of goods rose 18.1 percent to $25.3 billion from $21.4 billion in the preceding fiscal year, while imports of goods increased 26.4 percent to $56.3 billion, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) data showed.
• PBS data further showed that trade deficit in June sharply expanded 71 percent year-on-year to $3.6 billion. Monthly exports climbed 68.4 percent year-on-year to $2.7 billion and imports jumped 70 percent year-on-year to $6.3 billion


4. Egypt opens strategic naval base

• Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on July 3, 2021 opened a strategic naval base on the Mediterranean Sea to “secure shipping lines”, the presidency said.
• “It is the latest Egyptian military base on the Mediterranean, and will be focused on securing the country’s northern and western front,” the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.
• The ceremony was attended by Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan.


5. IAEA deputy head to visit Iran

• The deputy head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog IAEA is to visit Iran for “routine” matters and no talks are planned, Iran’s envoy said on July 3, 2021 according to state media, as the agency awaits a reply from Tehran on an expired monitoring deal.
• In late June, the International Atomic Energy Agency demanded an immediate response from Iran on whether it would extend a monitoring agreement that had expired. Iran said this week it was yet to decide whether to extend the deal.
• “(Massimo) Apar will visit Iran this coming week. His visit is in line with routine safeguards activities and within the framework of a comprehensive safeguards accord,” Kazem Gharibabadi said, according to the state news agency IRNA


6. 50,000 Afghans at risk: US in talks with three CA states for refugees

• The Biden administration is exploring having three Central Asian countries temporarily take in thousands of Afghans who worked with the US forces and face threats from the Taliban now that the US troops are withdrawing after 20 years, three sources familiar with the matter said on Friday.
• They said Washington was in talks with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan about letting in the at-risk Afghan citizens. Two of the sources were US officials and all requested anonymity, reports a UK-based international wire agency.
• The three sources said an agreement did not appear imminent with any of the countries


7. Lithuania declares emergency due to migration from Belarus

• Lithuania has declared a state of emergency due to an influx of migrants in the last few days from neighbouring Belarus, as tensions between the European Union and Belarus escalate.
• Lithuania`s Interior Minister Agle Bilotaite said that the decision, proposed by the State Border Guard Service, was necessary not because of an increased threat to the country of 2.8 million people but to put a more robust system into place to handle migrants coming in.
• Its very important to have a legal system and instruments to be able to swiftly make decisions in response to arising challenges, Bilotaite said during a government meeting on Friday evening, according to the Baltic News Service.


8. World in dangerous period, warns WHO

• The world is in a very “dangerous period” of the coronavirus pandemic compounded by more transmissible variants like Delta — first detected in India — which is continuing to evolve and mutate, the World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has warned.
• “In countries with low COVID-19 vaccination coverage, terrible scenes of hospitals overflowing are again becoming the norm,” Tedros told his bi-weekly press briefing in Geneva.
• “But no country is out of the woods yet”, he added. Tedros explained that the Delta variant is ‘dangerous’ and continues to evolve and mutate, and this requires constant evaluation and ‘careful adjustment of the public health response’


9. England’s Robinson free to resume career after tweet storm

• Ollie Robinson is free to play for England again after receiving an eight-game ban — five of them deferred — for offensive tweets he posted several years ago, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced on July 3, 2021.
• The 27-year-old pace bowler will be available for England’s forthcoming matches including the five-Test series with India as a disciplinary panel deemed him to have already served the three-game ban.
• He was also fined £3,200 ($4,400)


10. Indonesia rolls out tougher curbs as virus cases skyrocket

• Thousands of troops and police hit the streets of Indonesia’s Java island and Bali on July 3, 2021 to enforce new virus curbs as the Southeast Asian nation battles an unprecedented wave of Covid-19 infections.
• The country’s overwhelmed healthcare system teetered on the brink of collapse as jammed hospitals turned away patients, forcing desperate families to hunt for oxygen tanks to treat the sick and dying at home.
• Hundreds of checkpoints were set up as mosques, parks, shopping malls and restaurants were shuttered across the capital Jakarta and hard-hit Java
