1. Pakistan, India working to fight locusts: FO

• Despite high running tensions between Pakistan and India over held Kashmir, the Foreign Office on June 4, 2020 said the two were cooperating with each other to fight desert locust invasion under a forum administered by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
• Pakistan is part of FAO`s Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in South West Asia (SWAC), which is one of the oldest of the three regional commissions within the global locust early warning and prevention system.
• Other members of the regional commission include India, Iran and Afghanistan


2. NA, Senate budget sessions begin today

• The budget sessions of both the houses of parliament National Assembly and Senate are set to begin on Friday (June 4, 2020) as the staff of the two secretariats are geared up to ensure strict adherence to the SOPs (standard operating procedures) to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
• The Senate is scheduled to meet in the morning whereas the National Assembly session will be held in the afternoon and the orders of the day for both the houses have already been issued by the respective secretariat.
• In a relate d development, Prime Minister Imran Khan on June 4, 2020 nominated Dr Shahzad Waseem as the new Leader of the House in the Senate. Mr Waseem is replacing Shibli Faraz, who last month took charge as federal minister for information and broadcasting


3. Face mask must for visitors to govt offices

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has made wearing face mask mandatory for entry to offices as the province recorded 21 deaths due to coronavirus and 517 new cases of the infectious disease on June 4, 2020.
• The provincial tally of fatalities due to the pandemic reached 521 while number of cases stood at 11,890, a report by health department said.
• As cases and deaths due to the virus kept increasing for the past few days, the government made wearing face mask compulsory in government offices.


4. Pakistan gets around $168m to fight locust attack

• Various Countries and donors have pledged around $168 million to fight locust attack in Pakistan. The agro-economic development lies in structural reforms, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Syed Fakhar Imam, said on June 4, 2020 while chairing third meeting of Agricultural Development Forum at FAO office, Islamabad.
• Federal Minister made it clear that agricultural development can only be achieved by revamping agriculture technology, reorienting agriculture research, transfer of technology and promoting organic farming.
• During the briefing FAO officials mentioned that the Government of Pakistan has been taking numerous anticipatory actions in collaboration with FAO, in coordination with neighboring countries, and with the support of international partners to address this threat and be prepared for a timely and effective response.


5. PM appoints Dr Shahzad Waseem as Leader of House in Senate

• Prime Minister Imran Khan on June 4, 2020 appointed a senior member of the ruling party Senator Dr Shahzad Waseem as Leader of the House in the Senate only a day before the scheduled budget session of the Upper House of the Parliament.
• “Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani through a letter has received the nomination of Senator Shahzad as leader of the House from PM and a formal notification of his appointment will be issued soon,” said Ramzan Sajid, director (media) of the Senate.
• He further said that Chairman Senate will issue notification of his appointment


6. Punjab announces reduction in taxes, duties

• Punjab government will provide relaxation in Sales Tax on services, besides facilitating in property tax collection, extension in the entertainment duty along with reduction in tax rate in budget 2020-21 in the backdrop of covid-19 pandemic in the country.
• This was decided in the 3rd and final meeting of the Ministerial committee on Resources Mobilization 2020-21 chaired by Punjab Minister for Finance Hashim Jawan Bakhat.
• The meeting was attended by provincial minister Irrigation Mohsin Laghari, Excise and Taxation Minister Hafiz Mumtaz, Agriculture Advisor Abdul Haiy, Secretary Finance Abdullah Sumbal, Member Board of Revenue and other officials concern.


7. UN calls for `people`s vaccine`

• Europe ramped up efforts to help its coronavirus-hit economies on June 4, 2020 as the UN chief called for a `people`s vaccine` to battle the pandemic.
• With Brazil and Mexico seeing record deaths after Latin America became the new hotspot for the disease, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said a new vaccine against the coronavirus had to be available to everyone across the world.
• `A vaccine must be seen as a global public good a people`s vaccine, which a growing number of world leaders are calling for,` he said in a message to a virtual summit hosted by Britain that aims to raise funds for Gavi, the global vaccine alliance


8. Foreign fighters still have presence in Afghanistan: UN

• Battle losses and desertions have reduced the strong Daesh militant force in Afghanistan to a rag-tag group of about 200 fighters, said a UN report released this week.
• The eastern province of Nangarhar has been the main stronghold of this group known as the Islamic State of Khorasan or ISIL-K ever since it came to Afghanistan more than a decade ago.
• `From September to November 2019, the number of ISIL-K operatives in Nangarhar was reduced from 1,750 armed fighters and a leadership council of 22 … spread over seven districts, to fewer than200 fighters [living] under siege in the Takhto area of Achin District,`it stated


9. Libya`s unity govt claims full control of Tripoli

• Libya`s UN-recognised unity government said on June 4, 2020 that it was back in full control of the capital and its suburbs after more than a year of fighting off an offensive by eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar.
• `Our heroic forces have full control of Greater Tripoli right up to the city limits,` Mohamad Gnounou, spokesman for the forces of the Government of National Accord (GNA), said in a Facebook post.
• The announcement came after GNA forces retook the capital`s civilian airport on Wednesday, more than a year after losing it in Haftar`s initial drive on the capital


10. Hydroxychloroquine ineffective at preventing COVID-19: trial

• Taking hydroxychloroquine shortly after being exposed to COVID-19 does not help prevent infection in a statistically meaningful way, scientists reported June 3, 2020 following a clinical trial.
• The medicine has been touted by US President Donald Trump, who has said he used it as a prophylaxis against the novel coronavirus.
• But an experiment involving 821 people across the United States and Canada showed it did not work significantly better than a placebo for this purpose
