1. Gilani scores Senate poll upset, forces PM to go for trust vote
• Hours after the ruling coalition`s candidate Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh suffered defeat at the hands of opposition`s Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in a major upset during the Senate elections on March 3, 2021, the government announced that Prime Minister Imran Khan would seek a vote of confidence afresh from the National Assembly.
• When contacted, federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz said that the prime minister would seek vote of confidence from the assembly during its ongoing session
• The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, however, clinched the reserved seat of Senate for women from Islamabad. Its candidate Fouzia Arshad secured 174 votes while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz`s Farzana Kausar got 161 votes. Five votes were rejected.
2. Senate shocker forces PM to seek vote of confidence
• In a major upset, Opposition parties’ joint candidate, Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani, defeated government’s nominee Abdul Hafeez Shaikh in a close and crucial contest for the Senate slot here in the National Assembly on March 3, 2021.
• An eleven-party alliance, the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), had fielded PPP leader and former PM Gillani to make a ‘surprise’ amid rising political temperature.
• Except the major upset at one of the general seats in the federal capital, the PTI-led ruling alliance secured 28 seats out of 48 vacant seats in the election for the Senate. While the opposition parties including PPP, PML-N, JUI, ANP and BNP got 20 seats
3. Pakistan to borrow Rs8.71 trillion in next 3 years
• Pakistan would borrow Rs8.71 trillion in three years, which would further increase the overall debt of the country.
• Pakistan’s overall debt is already on the increasing side. The country’s total debt and liabilities had increased to Rs44.9 trillion during the last year, reveal the official figures recently presented in the National Assembly.
• Meanwhile, the incumbent government has planned to take more loans in medium term. The government would borrow Rs3.19 trillion in the ongoing fiscal year, Rs2.83 trillion in next financial year and Rs2.69 trillion in the year 2022-23, according to the figures of the ministry of finance
4. January 17th driest month since 1961: Met Office
• Pakistan received less than average rains in January and February, with the first month of this year becoming the 17th driest month since 1961, the Met Office said on March 3, 2021.
• The Met Office said it had not recorded any significant rainfall in February across the country while the count for January didn`t sound promising. `National rainfall for the month of January 2021 was 59 per cent below normal, said the Met Office data titled, `Pakistan Winter 2021 Rainf all Update`.
• `January 2021 was the 17th driest month since 1961. AJ&K (Opc), GB (1pc) & Punjab (6pc) recorded close to normal rain
5. Germany to fine firms over rights violations abroad
• Germany on March 3, 2021 took a step towards forcing companies to take responsibility for any labour or environmental abuses in their global supply chain, with a new law that allows for fines worth millions of euros.
• The law was spurred on by a deadly fire in a textile factory in Pakistan and a devastating dam collapse at a Brazilian iron ore mine that killed more than 250 people both of which had links to German companies
6. US contractor dies after rockets hit Iraq base hosting coalition
• A US contractor died of cardiac failure after rocket fire hit an Iraqi base hosting coalition troops on March 3, 2021, the Pentagon said, just two days ahead of Pope Francis` visit to the country.
• Around 10 rockets slammed into the sprawling Ain al-Assad military base in Iraq`s western desert after several weeks of escalating US-Iran tensions on Iraqi soil
7. Brain Ion channel identified as new line to treat depression
• Researchers from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have identified a drug that works against depression by a completely different mechanism than existing treatments.
• Their study showed that ezogabine (also known as retigabine), a drug that opens KCNQ2/3 type of potassium channels in the brain, is associated with significant improvements in depressive symptoms and anhedonia in patients with depression.
8. Nabi, Babar on song as Kings thump Zalmi by six wickets
• Brilliant Mohammad Nabi showed his striking prowess as he and the classy Babar Azam helped Karachi Kings overcome a lethargic bowling effort to thump Peshawar Zalmi by six wickets in their HBL Pakistan Super League 6 fixture at the National Stadium.
• The 13th consecutive victory by the chasing side in this edition came as no surprise but Peshawar were definitely to blame themselves for shoddy fielding and equally poor bowling after reducing Karachi to 43-3 in seven overs and thend ropping a dolly catch offered by Nabi
9. Scientists discover how electrons close to Earth
• New study found that electrons can reach ultra-relativistic energies for very special conditions in the magnetosphere when space is devoid of plasma.
• Recent measurements from NASA’s Van Allen Probes spacecraft showed that electrons can reach ultra-relativistic energies flying at almost the speed of light.
• Hayley Allison, Yuri Shprits, and collaborators from the German Research Centre for Geosciences have revealed under which conditions such strong accelerations occur.
10. Qais keeps alive Gladiators` playoff hopes
• Quetta Gladiators were left smiling on March 3, 2 021 as they finally stopped a four-match losing streak in the HBL Pakistan Super League 6 as the 2019 champions sealed a 22-run victory over Multan Sultans in rather unusual circumstances at the National Stadium on Wednesday.
• After posting 176-7, Quetta made a startling comeback by bowling out Multan for 154 to break the 13-match sequence of chasing sides emerging victorious, which also put a break to the run of four straight six wicket wins
