1. Attack on Shia mosque claims 57 lives

• At least 57 worshippers lost their lives and194 others were injured when a suicide attacker detonated himself inside a Shia mosque in the Koocha Risaldar area of Peshawar`s old city neighbourhood on March 4, 2022, rescue and police personnel said.
• The Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) confirmed the death toll and injuries in the attack. LRH spokesperson Muhammad Asim said 10 of the injured were in critical condition, while nine of the bodies were charred beyond recognition.
• KP police chief Moazzam Jah Ansari said the lone attacker, who was on foot, first killed one of the police guards and then wounded the other before entering the mosque`s hall, some 25 yards away, where he detonated the explosives attached to his body in the third row of worshippers


2. Pakistan remains on `grey list` as UAE also joins the club

• With just two unmet targets out of 34 action points, the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has retained Pakistan on its terrorism financing `grey list` and asked the country to address the remaining deficiencies in its financial system as soon as possible.
• However, at the concluding session of its hybrid plenary meeting on Friday, the Paris-based global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog also appreciated Pakistan`s robust progress on its global commitments to fight financial crimes.
• The FATF added the United Arab Emirates to its increased monitoring list, also known as the grey list, of countries with inadequate controls over terrorism financing. The watchdog also decided to appoint. Raja Kumar of Singapore as its next president for a fixed two-year term.
• Pakistan was placed on the list in 2018, which made foreign firms more cautious about investing in the country.


3. Alvi gives up constitutional immunity in PTV attack case

• President Dr Arif Alvi on March 4, 2022 appeared before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) here and submitted an application seeking withdrawal of his constitutional immunity, asking the judge to decide the case against him on merit.
• During the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf`s (PTI) months-long sit-in in 2014, police had invoked the Anti Terrorism Act against PTI chief Imran Khan, who was then in the opposition, and his party leaders Dr Alvi, Asad Umar, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shafqat Mehmood and Raja Khurram Nawaz for inciting violence.
• President Alvi along with other PTI leaders faces trial for allegedly attack-ing the PTV building and Parliament House during the sit-in against the then PML-N government


4. US warns Pakistan of Ukraine war consequences

• The United States said on Friday it had informed Pakistan the war in Ukraine could have both regional and global consequences, even as the Foreign Office objected to the issuance of a press release by a group of 23 envoys earlier this week, saying the move was undiplomatic.
• `We have briefed the government of Pakistan on the impact that Russia`s unprovoked war against Ukraine could have on regional and global security, a US State Department spokesperson told Dawn when asked to respond to these developments.

5. Uzbek president winds up `productive` Pakistan tour

• Pakistan and Uzbekistan on March 4, 2022 agreed to promote science and technology linkages and cooperation between the youths to benefit the people of two countries.
• The bilateral ties were discussed in a meeting between President Arif Alvi and his Uzbek counterpart Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who visited the Aiwan-i-Sadr on Friday before wrapping up his two-day official tour to Islamabad.
• The two leaders noted progress on collaboration in education, culture, security and defence and reiterated commitment to continue pursuing common goals of economic development. A wide range of issues of bilateral interest and important regional and international matters were discussed
