6. Millions locked down as China wrestles with worst virus outbreak in two years

• China placed all 17 million residentsin one of its biggest eities under lockdown on March 13, 2022, as virus cases doubled nationwide to nearly 3,400 and anxiety mounted over the resilience of its `zero-Covid` approach in the face of the worst outbreak in two years.
• The southern tech hub of Shenzhen told all residents to stay at home as the city struggles to eradicate an Omicron flareup linked to neighbouring virus-ravaged Hong Kong.
• The lockdown and a suspension of public transport will last until March 20, a city government notice said, adding that it would launch three rounds of mass testing.
• The move extends an earlier lockdown imposed on the city`s central business district

• Iran has suspended talks with regional rival Saudi Arabia, a website affiliated to Iran`s top security body reported on March 13, 2022, without giving a reason for the decision which comes as a fifth round of negotiations was due to start this week.
• A day earlier Saudi Arabia carried out mass executions that activists said included 41 Shias. Meanwhile talks on an Iranian nuclear deal in Vienna have stalled.
• `Iran has unilaterally suspended talks with Saudi Arabia,` Nour News said, without providing a reason. It said no specific date had been scheduled for a new round of talks


8. Iranian missiles rain down on `strategic Israeli centre` in Iraq

• Iran claimed responsibility for a missile strike on March 13, 2022 on the northern Iraqi city of Arbil, saying it targeted an Israeli `strategic centre` and warning of more attacks.
• Authorities in Iraq`s autonomous Kurdish region said 12 ballistic missiles rained down on Arbil in a pre-dawn cross-border attack targeting US interests that slightly wounded two civilians and caused material damage.
• Iran`s Revolutionary Guards confirmed they fired the projectiles, claiming they were targeting sites used by Israel, a top ally of the US


9. UNSC asked to stop use of sexual violence as weapon in conflicts

• Pakistan has urged the UN Security Council to focus on the ongoing violence against women in India-held Jammu and Kashmir.
• During a Security Council debate on the week-long International Women`s Day, Pakistan`s UN ambassador Munir Akram underlined the need to stop using sexual violence as a weapon in armed conflicts.
• `Less visible in the Security Council`s debate is the ongoing violence against women and girls in India-occupied Jammu and Kashmir,` he said.
• `There`s documented evidence of rape and sexual violence being used as a weapon of war (in the region)


10. Russia bombs Ukrainian military base near Poland; 35 killed

• Russian missiles hit a large Ukrainian military base near the border with Nato member Poland on March 13, 2022, killing 35 people, even as Moscow said that negotiators were making headway at talks to resolve conflict in Ukraine.
• Residents of the capital Kyiv woke again to the sound of air raid sirens and city authorities said they were stockpiling food items sufficient for two weeks for the two million people who have not yet fled the fighting.
• Ukraine also reported renewed air strikes on an airport in the west, heavy shelling on Chernihiv northeast of the capital and attacks on the southern town of Mykolayiv, where officials said nine people had been killed
