6. Troops in Mariupol reject Russian surrender terms

• Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that his country could not fulfil `Russian ultimatums`, claiming Moscow was seeking to `destroy` his country.
• He said Moscow wanted Ukraine to `hand over` Kharkiv, Mariupol and Kyiv, adding that neither the people of those cities `or me, as president, can do this`.
• Ukrainian officials defiantly rejected a Russian demand that their forces in Mariupol lay down arms and raise white flags on Monday in exchange for safe passage out of the besieged strategic port city.


7. Senators spar over first Black woman nominee for US Supreme Court

• Senators launched marathon hearings on Monday on Ketanji Brown Jackson`s bid to be the first Black woman on America`s Supreme Court, with opposing sides sparring on her sentencing record as Republicans sought to frame her as soft on crime.
• President Joe Biden`s pick to join the nation`s highest court was formally introduced at the start of televised hearings that will go on to include two days of questioning and a final day of testimony from outside witnesses.
• Biden released a statement on social media just before Jackson`s arrival at the US Capitol complex, describing her as `a brilliant legal mind with the utmost character and integrity.


8. Israeli PM, UAE prince visit Egypt

• Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi hosted Israel`s prime minister and the de facto leader of the United Arab Emirates on March 21, 2022 amid a deadlock in talks to revive a nuclear deal with Iran.
• Shared concerns over Iran saw the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain forge ties with Israel in 2020 to create a new regional axis at a time of uncertainty over the commitment of key security ally, the United States.
• Gulf states were excluded from talks to revive a 2015 nuclear pact with Iran that they have criticised for not addressing Tehran`s missile programme and regional proxies, including in Yemen


9. No sign of survivors as plane carrying 132 crashes in China

• China Eastern confirmed there had been f atalities after a jet carrying 132 people crashed into a mountain in southern China on March 21, 2022, shortly after losing contact with air traffic control and dropping thousands of metres in just three minutes.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed deep grief over loss of lives in the plane crash. `Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the passenger plane crash in China. 10. Acclaimed author Sara Suleri is no more

• Author and academic Sara Suleri Goodyear died on March 21, 2022. She was 69.
• Although there was no official word from her family, many in the literary community shared the news and paid rich tribute to her.
• Born in 1953 in Karachi to renowned journalist Z.A. Sulehri and Welsh English professor Mair Jones, she was best known for her memoir, Meatless Days, which describe her years in Lahore
