6. Russia threatens to seize assets of `hostile` countries

• Russia suggested on May 1, 2022 that it could seize the Russian-based assets of countries it deems hostile in retaliation for a US proposal to sell off Russian oligarchs` assets and pay the proceeds to Ukraine.
• `As far as companies based in Russian territory are concerned whose owners are citizens of hostile countries and where the decision has been taken` to seize Russian assets, `it is fair to take reciprocal measures and confiscate assets,` said the speaker of Russia`s lower house of parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin.
• `And the proceeds from the sale of these assets will be used for our country`s development,` he said on his Telegram channel


7. Indian troops killed 62 Kashmiri fighters this year: police

• Indian forces have killed 62 fighters, including 15 foreigners, in occupied Kashmir this year, a police official said on May 1, 2022.
• Vijay Kumar, the occupied state`s police chief, said some of the fighters killed this year had links with Lashkar-e-Taiba.
• A hallmark of the group is to conduct `fedayeen` attacks where men are willing to fight to the death, but are not suicide bombers.
• Kumar said 15 fighters linked with the Jaish-e-Mohammad, which took responsibility for one of the deadliest attacks on Indian forces in 2019, were among those killed in a series of operations


8. Clashes in Istanbul as Turks defy May Day ban

• Turkish police on May 1, 2022 detained more than 160 protesters who were trying to hold a May Day rally in defiance of a ban imposed by the governor`s office.
• AFP images showed riot police clashing with protesters near Istanbul`s Taksim Square, pinning some of them forcefully to the ground before rounding them up in a police car.
• The Istanbul governor`s office said 164 people were held after staging `an unauthorised rally` and refusing to disperse despite police warnings.
• An AFP photographer saw around 20 protesters detained near Taksim Square


9. Assam CM leads push to repeal faith-based laws

• India should replace marriage and inheritance laws that are based on religion with a uniform civil code, the chief minister of a northeastern state said on May 1, 2022, taking aim at rules that allow Muslim men, for example, to have four wives.
• Successive governments have steered clear of adopting such a code for fear of angering voters from India`s Hindu majority as well as its Muslim and Christian minorities.
• But members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Hindu nationalist party and its hardline affiliates want to roll out the code in some states to gauge the strength of any backlash prior to a national push


10. `Right to be forgotten`: Israeli firm promises to purge digital footprint

• Three young Israelis formerly serving in military cyber units have figured out how to locate your digital footprint and give you the tools to delete it.
• The company Mine, co-founded by Gal Ringel, Gal Golan and Kobi Nissan, says it uses artificial intelligence to show users where their information is being stored like whether an online shoe store kept your data after a sneaker purchase three years ago.
• Ringel said Mine`s technology has already been used by one million people worldwide, with over 10 million `right to be forgotten` requests sent to companies using the firm`s platform.
