1. World economy reels as pandemic toll tops 275,000

• Soaring coronavirus infections forced Russia to scale back World War H victory celebrations on May 09, 2020, as the worldwide death toll surged past 275,000 and lockdowns pushed millions into unemployment.
• The pandemic has killed more than 275,000 people across the world since it began in China late last year, with more than 85 per cent of the fatalities in Europe and the United States, according to a tally based on official figures.
• In total, at least 275,018 deaths have been reported from 3.95 million confirmed cases, according to the tally. Europe is the most affected continent with 154,313 deaths and 1.69m cases. The United States is the country with the most deaths at 77,280, following by Britain on 31,241, Italy 30,201, Spain 26,478 and France 26,230.


2. Sindh first province to detect over 1,000 virus cases in a day

• Sindh has become the first province to record more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases in a single day, as the countrywide tally jumped to 28,795 on May 09, 2020.
• The overall number of cases across the country was 5,985 when the lockdown was first eased on April 14, according to the federal government.
• Among the 1,841 new cases of the deadly virus reported from across the country during the past day, as many as 1,080 were detected in Sindh with hundreds of them being traced in a Khairpur village alone.
• With this, the tally of confirmed cases in the province has climbed to 10,771.


3. US move blocks UNSC vote on global truce

• The United States on May 09, 2020 stunned other members of the UN Security Council by preventing a vote on a resolution for a ceasetre in various connicts around the world to help troubled nations better fight the coronavirus pandemic, diplomats said.
• Washington`s reversal came a day after it agreed to the text, negotiators said under cover of anonymity. `The United States cannot support the current draft,` the country`s delegation declared, without further details, to the 14 other Security Council members, after nearly two months of difficult negotiation over the text.
• The latest stalemate continues to leave the global peace and security body largely mute in the face of a once in-a-century pandemic that has killed more than 270,000 people and raised further fears for the world`s most vulnerable.


4. ADB dedicates $200m to drugs firms to beat virus

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) under its `Supply Chain Finance Programme` has dedicated $200 million to support companies that make and distribute medicines and other items needed to combat coronavirus in the developing member countries of the Bank.
• The programme aims to stabilise the supply chain for products such as N95 marks, test kits, gloves, personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare providers, ventilators, hygiene items, and other critical goods.
• The ADB assistance is targeted at channeling fund to manufacturers, their suppliers, and the distributors of critical goods through post-shipment post-acceptance finance, pre-shipment loans, and distributor financing.


5. Business activities allowed in Balochistan from tomorrow

• The Balochistan government has allowed traders to resume business activities from Monday across the province.
• Liaquat Ali Shahwani said the leaders of several trade organisations had assured the government that they would implement the standard operating procedures (SOPs) while reopening their businesses.
• He said that despite a warning from doctors against relaxing the lockdown imposed in the wake of coronavirus, the government had allowed the traders to resume their business activities as they were badly affected due to closure of their shops for the past one and half months.
• `Businessmen can open their shops, malls and markets seven days a week from 3am to 5pm in Quetta and other towns and cities of Balochistan,` he said. Tailor shops, hotels, medical stores and blood banks would remain open round the clock, he added


6. UNSC urged to stop atrocities against Muslims in India, held Kashmir

• Voicing deep concern over rising anti-Muslim attacks in parts of the world, Pakistan has called upon the UN Security Council to act and prevent impending atrocities, including against Muslims in India and occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
• `We are, unfortunately, witnessing a global resurgence of rightwing and fascist ideologies, hate speech, xenophobia, Islamophobia, incitement to violence and acts of brutal violence, said Ambassador Munir Akram during a Security Council meeting on Friday.
• `These trends have been exacerbated, rather than ameliorated, by the Covid-19 pandemic the most serious global crisis since the founding of the United Nations, the Pakistani envoy said. Estonia, a non-permanent member of the 15-nation council, convened the meeting on `Preventing Future Atrocities` under the format of Arria formula, which is named after a former Venezuelan ambassador to the UN, Diego Arria. It is an informal process which affords members of the Security Council the opportunity to hear persons in a conndential setting.


7. US panel on religious freedom hails Pakistan’s National Commission for Minorities

• The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has welcomed the establishment by the Pakistani government of a National Commission for Minorities, calling it a step in the right direction.
• “We are encouraged by the formation of the National Commission for Minorities as a governmental body promoting the rights of religious minorities within Pakistan; it’s an important step in Pakistan’s continuing journey towards the protection of religious freedom,” Anurima Bhargava, one of USCIRF’s eight commissioners, said in a statement.
• In 2014, the Supreme Court of Pakistan directed the government to form a commission “to monitor the practical realization of the rights and safeguards provided to the minorities under the Constitution and law.”


8. China issues rules for online bank lending

• China`s banking and insurance regulator on May 9, 2020 issued draft rules on commercial banks` online lending business, banning the use of such loans for riskier investments and capping banks` online consumer credit, in a move to rein in financial risks.
• The regulations are the first that specifically target banks` online lending business, which has been expanded aggressively under the development of financial technology, that has led to the misuse of banks` consumer credit and higher household leverage.
• Bank loans issued online cannot be used to purchase property, stocks, bonds, futures, financial derivatives and asset management products and make other riskier investments, the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission said. `If it is found that the purpose of the loan is illegal or not used according to the agreed purpose, measures shall be taken to recover the loan in advance,` it said


9. UN chief calls for global action against hate speech

• UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres has called for global action against hate speech that has risen alongside the Coronavirus pandemic. Listing examples of hate speech that surfaced during the crisis, he stressed the need to end anti-foreigner sentiments, conspiracy theories and attacks against Muslims on the pretext of the pandemic


10. Roy Horn, of magical duo Siegfried and Roy, dies

• Roy Horn, half of Las Vegas illusion­ist duo Siegfried and Roy, died May 8, 2020 of complications from the coro­navirus. He was 75.
• Known for his work with big cats, elephants and snakes, the German-born magician died at Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas, his pub­licist told US media. He tested posi­tive for COVID-19 last week. Horn’s celebrated work with exotic animals came to an abrupt and violent end in 2003 when he was dragged from the stage by a 400-pound white tiger and seriously injured.
