1. Pakistan opens markets amid steep rise in cases

• As Pakistan embraces further relaxation in lockdown amid a sharp rise in death toll and coronavirus cases last week, the government hopes that the virus will not spread as rapidly as previously had been estimated but takes measures to prepare the nation for the worst.
• Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar at a media briefing on Sunday said that besides easing the restrictions, the government was taking certain steps including the use of latest technology to identify Covid-19 hotspots and ensure `smart` lockdown in order to control local transmission.
• During the last one week, the country has recorded 200 deaths and more than 10,000 new cases of the highly contagious virus.
• With this addition, the overall death toll has surged to 661 with the number of coronavirus cases rising to 30,416


2. Punjab govt allows home isolation of corona patients

• The Punjab government on May 10, 2020 allowed home isolation of coronavirus patients showing no symptoms or mild symptoms after assessment and approval of the Home Isolation Committee.
• The Punjab Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department has notified guidelines for home isolation of Covid-19 patients on the recommendations of the Corona Expert Advisory Group (CEAG) and the Technical Working Group.
• The respective deputy commissioners will notify the home isolation committees having a representative of assistant commissioner, deputy district officer (health) and chief officer of tehsil or TMA, which will assess and decide patients` home isolation on the basis of sufficient number of single rooms available to accommodate one or more than one coronavirus patients


3. Suspension of domestic flight operations extended to 13th

• Although the government is moving towards easing lockdown restrictions, suspension of the domestic flight operations has further been extended to May 13 (Wednesday).
• The decision to this effect was taken on May 10, 2020.
• After the outbreak of coronavirus, international and domestic flights operations had been suspended till April 30, to contain the spread of Covid-19. The suspension of domestic flights was further extended to May 7 and again to May 10. However, chartered and cargo nights continued to operate.


4. NAB elected head of SAARC Anti-Corruption Forum

• The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has been elected as the head of SAARC Anti-Corruption Forum.
• `NAB is role model not only for Pakistan but also for entire SAARC countries as NAB has been unanimously elected as chairman of SAARC Anti-Corruption Forum which is great achievement of Pakistan due to NAB`s efforts,` said an official press release issued by the NAB headquarters on May 10, 2020.
• It said the performance of NAB had been lauded by the SAARC countries, including India


5. Athar Shah Khan `Jaidi` is no more

• Athar Shah Khan, the renowned writer, playwright and the actor who created an iconic character Jaidi which he himself played with endearing zaniness, passed away on May 10, 2020. He was 77. He leaves behind his wife and four sons.
• Mr Khan was born in the Indian state of Rampur on Jan 1, 1943.
• After independence his family opted to migrate to Pakistan and came to Lahore where he acquired his early education. He graduated from the Urdu Science College, Karachi, and then obtained a master`s degree in journalism from the University of Punjab.


6. WHO suspends staff activity in Yemen`s Houthi-held areas, operations continue

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has suspended staff activity at its hubs in Houthi-held areas of Yemen, a directive seen by this news agency showed, in a move sources said aimed to pressure the group to be more transparent about suspected coronavirus cases.
• War-ravaged Yemen, one of the countries’ most vulnerable to disease, is divided between the internationally recognised government temporarily based in the south and the Houthi group that ousted it from power in the capital, Sanaa, in late 2014.
• The Saudi-backed government has so far reported 34 cases of the novel coronavirus with seven deaths in territory it controls, while the Houthis, who hold most large urban centres, have recorded just two cases with one death.


7. Syria clashes kill 48 in highest toll since truce

• Clashes in northwest Syria killed 48 regime fighters and jihadists on May 10, 2020 in the highest such death toll since the start of a two-month old ceasefire there, a monitor said.
• A truce since March 6 had largely stemmed fighting in Syria`s last major rebel bastion of Idlib after a months-long regime assault that killed hundreds of civilians and forced almost a million to flee.
• But before dawn on May 10, 2020 rebels attacked the positions of pro-regime fighters on the western flank of the jihadist-dominated region, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights


8. Indian, Chinese troops in border face-off: report

• Troops of India and China were involved in a face-off at Naku La in North Sikkim which resulted in injuries to several soldiers on both sides, The Hindu said on May 10, 2020, quoting Indian army sources. It said the incident occurred on Saturday.
• `Incident of face-off took place between the troops and, as a result of aggressive behaviour, minor injuries took place on both the sides. Troops disengaged after dialogue and interaction at the local level,` the report quoted army sources as saying.
• Temporary and brief face-offs occur as boundaries are not resolved, sources said and troops resolve such issues mutually as per established protocols, the paper said


9. Gaethje upsets Ferguson to win UFC interim title

• Justin Gaethje put on a striking master class to score a surprise knockout victory over Tony Ferguson and win the interim lightweight title at UFC 249, which took place at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida on May 10, 2020.
• Ferguson, who came into the fight on a 12-win streak, suffered damage as Gaethje chopped at his legs and landed thunderous hooks before referee Herb Dean step ped into end the kghtlatein then first round.
• With over 80,000 deaths in the United States due to Covid-19, the UFC has come under fire for putting on the event, which took place with no fans in the stands and with stringent health and safety protocols in place


10. Afghanistan player handed six-year ban for corruption

• Afghanistan wicket-keeper/batsman Shafiqullah Shafaq has been hit with a six-year ban after he accepted four charges of breaching their Anti-Corruption Code, the country`s cricket board (ACB) said on May 10, 2020.
• The charges relate to offences during the first edition of the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) T20 in 2018, where Shafaq played for the Nangarhar Leopards, and the 2019 Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he represented Sylhet Thunder.
• The 30-year-old Shafaq, who made his Afghanistan debut in 2009 and has played 24 one-day internationals and 46 Twenty20 internationals, will be banned from all forms of cricket
