6. KP govt launches Rs25.9 billion food subsidy programme

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on May 17, 2022 announced Rs25.9 billion Insaf Food Card programme for five million residents after its withdrawal from the federal government`s food subsidy Ehsaas Rashan Programme in protest over its renaming and inclusion of undeserving beneficiaries.
• The announcement came after a decision by the provincial cabinet, which met here with Chief Minister Mahmood Khan in the chair and cabinet members and administrative secretaries in attendance.


7. 265 Ukrainian soldiers surrender at Azovstal

• Russia said on May 17, 2022 that 265 Ukrainian soldiers had surrendered after staging a last stand at the besieged Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, prompting Kyiv to call for a prisoner exchange.
• Moscow claimed control of the strategic port city of Mariupol last month after a weeks-long siege, but hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers remained holed up in underground tunnels beneath the huge Azovstal industrial zone.
• `Over the past 24 hours, 265 militants laid down their arms and surrendered, including 51 heavily wounded,` the Russian defence ministry said.


8. Spanish cabinet approves paid `menstrual leave`

• Spain`s cabinet on May 17, 2022 approved a bill which grants paid medical leave for women who suffer from severe period pain, in what would be a first in Europe.
• The bill entitles workers experiencing period pain to as much time off as they need, with the state social security system not employers picking up the tab for the sick leave.
• As with paid leave for other health reasons, a doctor must approve the temporary medical incapacity.
• The proposed legislation must still be approved by parliament, with a vote not expected for months


9. Spain, Morocco reopen land borders after two years

• Morocco and Spain have reopened the land borders between the north African country and the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, two years after they were shut due to Covid restrictions and a major diplomatic row.
• The enclaves on the Mediterranean coast in northern Morocco have the European Union`s only land borders with Africa.
• The gates opened shortly after 11pm local time on Monday night, letting dozens of cars and queues of pedestrians pass in both directions


10. Taliban shut down Afghan human rights body

• Taliban authorities on May said they had dissolved Afghanistan`s independent human rights commission as it was `not considered necessary`.
• Since the Taliban seized power last August, they have closed several bodies that protected the freedoms of Afghans, including the electoral commission and the ministry for women`s affairs.
• `We have some other organisations to carry out activities related to human rights, organisations that are linked to the judiciary,` deputy government spokesman Inamullah Samangani told AFP, without elaborating.
