• Amid the traditional respect that marks the birth anniversary of Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal called the `Poet of the East` which is being observed today (November 9, 2022), the federal government`s move to restore the Nov 9 public holiday came as a surprise to many.
• A communiqué from the PM Office, followed by an official notification from the Cabinet Division, officially restored `the public holiday on occasion of the birthday of Allama Iqbal throughout the country`.

• He also sells a $222 medallion on his website dubbed a `Spirit Optimiser`, which he claims helped him overcome Covid-19. A poll in September found 17 percent of Norwegians now have a lower opinion of the generally popular royal family, nearly all citing the princess and the shaman as the reason


8. Republicans retain momentum, but Democrats not far behind

• Medium to high voter turnout was reported from across the United States on November 8, 2022 as Americans began voting in the 2022 midterm elections.
• The results will determine whether Republicans or Democrats control congress for the final two years of President Joe Biden`s term.
• Polls opened in the second smallest state of Vermont which has about half a million voters at 5am. More than 45 million mail-in ballots had already been cast in 47 of the 50 states even before the voting began. Media reports said that pre-election voting this year has been higher than the last midterm, held in 2018

• Iran has charged two women journalists with propaganda against the state, the judiciary said on November 8, 2022, as it presses a crackdown on protests sparked by the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.
• The clerical state has been rocked by a protest movement that erupted on September 16 when Amini, 22, died after her arrest for allegedly breaking Iran`s strict hijab dress rules for women.
• Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who have both already spent more than a month in detention, `have been remanded in custody for propaganda against the system and conspiring against national security, judiciary spokesman Massoud Setayeshi told a weekly briefing in Tehran


10. Garcia outguns Sabalenka to seal WTA Finals victory

• France`s Caroline Garcia put on a serving masterclass to claim the biggest title of her career by defeating Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 to win the season-ending WTA Finals on November 8, 2022.
• Garcia covered her face with her hands and fell on her back after a Sabalenka forehand sailed wide on match point to earn her fourth title of the year.
• The 29-year-old from Lyon is only the second French player to win the WTA title after Amelie Mauresmo in 2005.`It`s definitely a lot of giant happiness, Garcia said after a win that will see her pocket $1.57 million in prize money and 1,375 rankings points.
