1. President approves elevation of three judges to SC

• President Dr Arif Alvi on November 9, 2022 approved the elevation of three high court judges to the Supreme Court (SC).
• Under Article 175A of the Constitution, he approved outgoing Islamabad High Court (IHC) chief justice Athar Minallah, Sindh High Court Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi and Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Waheed to the apex court, a statement issued by the President`s Secretariat, Islamabad, said.
• President Alvi also approved Justice Aamer Farooq`s appointment as the IHC chief justice


2. President Alvi advocates alternate dispute resolution in tribal districts

• President Dr Arif Alvi on November 9, 2022 said the alternate dispute resolution mechanisms could be adopted in the newly-merged tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the speedy resolution of the people`s grievances.
• `Alternate dispute resolution will reduce burden on the conventional justice system besides helping improve the overall law and order situation in the [tribal] region,` the president said during a briefing on the province`s development projects at the Governor`s House here,.
• Provincial Knance and health minister Taimur Saleem Jhagra, chief secretary and other senior officials attended the briefing, according to a news release issued by the President Secretariat`s Press Wing

3. `Seismic shift` to take interest out of banking sector

• After challenging the Federal Shariat Court`s (FSC) decision on the interest-free banking system some four months ago, the government had a major change of heart on November 9, 2022, saying that it now wants to rid the country of Riba as soon as possible.
• In a pre-recorded video message, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar announced that the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) would be immediately withdrawing appeals against an April decision of the FSC in which it gave the government five years to eliminate Riba (interest-based) banking from the country


4. First-ever e-bus starts pilot run on Lahore roads

• Though this step may not result in a noticeable improvement in the smog-infested air of Lahore overnight, an electric bus with zero smoke emission has begun running on Lahore roads as a test project. Every day, the bus makes two trips from the Punjab Transport Company`s (PTC) main station to Valencia Town.
• Malik Zaheer Abbas says he has the distinction of becoming the first instructor to assist in the operation of an electric bus in Lahore.
• `The bus trial run has been ongoing in Lahore for almost a month, and it`s going great,` he told on November 9, 2022


5. China donates 100,000 hepatitis vaccines to Pakistan

• China has donated more than 100,000 doses of hepatitis A vaccines for children and adults to Pakistan.
• The doses, manufactured by China-based biopharmaceutical company Sinovac, were handed over during an event held at the Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) on November 9, 2022.
• Federal Health Minister Abdul Qadir Patel received the vaccines from Sinovac CEO Gao Qiang.
• Speaking on the occasion, Mr Patel thanked the Chinese government and people and called the donation another `milestone` in the Pakistan-China friendship
