6. China pledges to support climate-hit states `despite no obligation`

• China said it would be willing to support the mechanism for compensations to climate-hit countries even though Beijing, also a victim of extreme climate change events, had `no obligation` to support these initiatives, said Chinese climate envoy Xie Zhenhua at the United Nations COP27 climate summit in Egypt.
• `We strongly support the claims from developing countries…for claiming loss and damage compensation because China is also a developing country,` Mr Xie said as per a Reuters report. `It is not the obligation of China but we are willing to make our contribution and make our effort.
• China is designated by the World Trade Organisation as a developing country, despite having the world`s second-largest economy

7. Pak Navy ships participate in global fleet review

• Pakistan Navy ships PNS Nasr and PNS Shamsheer recently visited Yokosuka, Japan, and participated in the International Fleet Review (IFR).
• The IFR was organised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Japan Maritime Self Defence Forces (JMSDF).
• The IFR formation comprised 38 units, including 18 ships and submarines, from different navies. The visit of the PN ships to Japan and participation in the IFR aim to strengthen bilateral ties, enhancing interoperability between navies and explore new vistas of defence cooperation

8. Russia abandons Kherson in major retreat

• Russian Defence Minister Sergei Sholgu on November 9, 2022 ordered his troops to withdraw from the occupied Ukrainian city of Kherson and take up defensive lines on the opposite bank of the River Dnipro.
• The announcement marked one of Russia`s most significant retreats and a potential turning point in the war, now nearing the end of its ninth month.
• In televised comments, General Sergei Surovikin, in overall command of the war, reported to Shoigu that it was no longer possible to keep Kherson city supplied.
• `Having comprehensively assessed the current situation, it is proposed to take up defence along the left (eastern) bank of the Dnipro River,` said Surovikin, standing at a lectern and indicating troop positions on a map whose details were greyed-out for the TV audience

9. Divided voters elect evenly split US Congress

• A deeply divided American electorate delivered a Congress so evenly split that even by November 9, 2022 afternoon, it was not clear who would control the bicameral US legislature.
• However, it seems that Republicans will have a thin majority in the House of Representatives and may even take the Senate by a seat or two.
• The results also thwarted Republican plans to impeach President Biden for allegedly stealing the 2020 elections.
• A Congress so divided would provide enough space for US President Joe Biden to use his veto in a dispute with the legislature, without fearing the repercussions. Congress can overturn a veto, but only with a two-thirds vote both in the Senate and the House.
• Among President Biden`s predecessors, Donald Trump used the veto 10 times, Barack Obama 12 times and George W. Bush 12 times when facing a hostile Congress

10. Pakistan a step away from glory

• Openers Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam slammed half centuries as Pakistan powered past New Zealand by seven wickets and into the Twenty20 World Cup final in front of a raucous crowd largely made up of their compatriots at the Sydney Cricket Ground on November 9, 2022, moving within one win of a second title.
• Rizwan scored 57 runs and skipper Babar added 53 in a 105-run stand to lay the foundation for victory as the 2009 champions Pakistan made easy work of a 153-run chase on a placid Sydney wicket.
• Despite a slightly nervy finish after both fell, Mohammad Haris` 30 off 26 balls helped complete a deserved victory with five balls to spare.
• That came after Shaheen Afridi took 2-24 to help restrict New Zealand to a sub-par 152-4 from their 20 overs
